An unexplored coupling process enhances dark Hg(II) reduction in mineral-Hg(II)-DOM ternary systems
Abstract Photochemical and microbial-mediated reduction of mercury (Hg) are recognized as key processes and pathways for Hg geochemical cycling and atmospheric emissions. However, these processes cannot fully account for the total budget of global elemental Hg(0) production. Here we show that net Hg(0) production is significantly enhanced in a goethite-Hg(II)-DOM ternary system under dark conditions, representing a ubiquitous mineral-organic interface in surface ecosystems. This enhancement arises from the combined effects of preferential adsorption of monodentate [Hg-DOM] + complexes, retention of electron-donating DOM in the aqueous phase, and lower interfacial energy barriers for Hg(II) reduction by goethite. We estimate that ternary interactions, as an underappreciated source of terrestrial Hg(0) emissions, release about 6.3% of topsoil Hg to the atmosphere. These findings underscore the need to integrate mineral-Hg(II)-DOM ternary systems into predictive models of the global Hg cycle and associated ecological risks.

Persistent hepatitis burden in a geographically isolated and medically underserved population: a community-based study
Abstract Ulleung County is a geographically isolated and medically underserved region in South Korea with a persistently high incidence of liver cancer. Using a community-based approach, this study aimed to estimate the prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections and to identify associated risk factors. As part of the Ulleung Liver Cancer Prevention and Management Project, an interagency workgroup implemented community-based screening and health behavior surveys. Between 2019 and 2022, a total of 1,792 residents aged ≥ 40 years voluntarily participated, and data from 1,684 participants were analyzed. The prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and hepatitis C virus antibody (anti-HCV) positivity was 7.19% and 1.37%, respectively. Lower educational attainment and lifetime smoking were significantly associated with HBsAg positivity, whereas cupping therapy performed at non-medical institutions was associated with anti-HCV positivity. HBsAg positivity was lower among individuals with tattoos. Although the high prevalence of HBV infection alone may not fully explain the elevated incidence of liver cancer in Ulleung County, it likely represents an important contributing factor. These findings highlight the value of community-based screening strategies for informing tailored hepatitis prevention efforts in geographically isolated populations.

A combinatorial domain screening platform reveals epigenetic effector interactions for transcriptional perturbation
Abstract Epigenetic regulation involves the coordinated interplay of diverse proteins. To systematically explore these combinations, we present COMBINE (combinatorial interaction exploration), a high-throughput platform that tests over 50,000 pairs of epigenetic effector domains up to 2,094 amino acids in length for their ability to modulate endogenous human gene transcription. COMBINE reveals diverse synergistic interactions between epigenetic protein domains, including a potent KRAB-L3MBTL3 fusion that increases the effective targeting window, enhances gene silencing in dose-limited conditions, and enables robust dual-directional CRISPR perturbation. Inducible screening shows DNA methylation modifiers are essential for epigenetic memory, with distinct combinations driving long-term repression and activation. This systematic analysis of pairwise domain interactions advances our understanding of epigenetic crosstalks and the development of next-generation epigenome editing tools. More broadly, COMBINE offers a generalizable platform to functionally characterize combinatorial biological processes at scale.
