Experimental observation of gray whale skull vibrations amplified in the bony hearing complex

Abstract Mysticete whales have bilateral bony ear complexes (tympanoperiotic complexes) that amplify low frequency vibrations in proximity to their vocalization ranges. Understanding the functional mechanics would enable precise predictions of mysticete hearing sensitivity, which is currently unknown. We conducted experiments on a juvenile and an adult gray whale skull from deceased animals to measure the vibrational dynamics between the tympanic bullae and the skull. Relative motions between bullae and skull indicate sound transfer to the inner ear. For the juvenile, assessments were performed on (1) a 3D-printed plastic skull-replica, (2) the original skull after much of the soft tissue had been removed by dissection, and (3) the denuded skull after hydrogen peroxide was used to erode the remaining soft tissues. We excited vibrations in the juvenile skull underwater by projecting sound in a test pool, ranging from 170–1000 Hz. Additionally, we measured in-air vibrations of the plastic, denuded, and adult skulls using a mechanical shaker to drive vibrations anteroposteriorly (rostrum-to-tail) from 150–1000 Hz. The results consistently showed amplification of vibrations at the tympanic bullae compared to the base of the skull, demonstrating a mechanism by which low-frequency sound is transferred from the environment, through the skull, to the inner ear.

Genetic diversity and adaptability of native sheep breeds from different climatic zones

Abstract To better understand the genetic architecture and adaptability of native sheep, 22 breeds were genotyped using ovine50K SNP chips. Eleven additional populations from open-source repositories were included. Cross population Extended Haplotype Homozygosity (XP-EHH) and Relative Scaled Haplotype Homozygosity (Rsb) haplotype-based approaches were used to identify genetic variations influencing the adaptation of local sheep breeds to different climatic zones. The results indicate that all breeds exhibited high but declining genetic diversity levels, with a larger proportion of genetic variation explained by development history and refined by geographical origin, as shown by principal component analysis and Neighbor Net graphs. Admixture analysis revealed high admixture levels in European and North African breeds. Using XP-EHH and Rsb methods, 371 genes were putatively under selection, with only nine common among all population pairs, highlighting unique adaptability. Most identified genes, including Interleukin (IL) and cluster differentiation (CD) gene families underlie immune responses, emphasizing their role in resilience to climate change effects. These findings support that indigenous sheep breeds have retained significant genetic diversity, but improper genetic management may threaten it. Additionally, the research emphasizes that indigenous sheep breeds’ unique adaptability to specific climatic zones makes them valuable genetic assets for developing climate-resilient breeds.

Ingesting chitosan can promote excretion of microplastics

Abstract Recently, the presence of microplastics (MPs) in common foods such as salt and beverages has been widely reported Microplastics (MPs) have been widely reported in common foods, including salt and beverages. MPs spread through the food chain and are eventually ingested into the human body through the diet. They have been found to accumulate in human feces, blood, and liver tissues, raising concerns about the effects of continuous intake of foods containing MP on the body. We examined whether rats could rapidly excrete polyethylene MPs (average particle size of 200 μm) when the MPs and were mixed with non-digestive dietary materials in their feed (indigestible dextrin, lactosucrose, chitosan, and eggshell membrane proteins). The group that ingested chitosan showed significant changes, including increased fecal weight, increased MP excretion rate, and decreased intestinal MP retention rate. The MP excretion rates in feces 0–144 h after ingestion were 83.7% ± 3.8% in the control group and 115.6% ± 4.5% in the chitosan group. These findings indicate that chitosan effectively promotes the expulsion of polyethylene MPs. The addition of chitosan to food may reduce the potential harm caused by MPa to a variety of organisms, including humans.
