Barriers and perceptions of WHONET/BacLink adoption in Nepal: A qualitative study of clinical microbiology laboratories
Background The International Vaccine Institute-led CAPTURA (Capturing Data on Antimicrobial Resistance Patterns and Trends in Use in Regions of Asia) project delivered capacity building activities to strengthen antimicrobial resistance surveillance activities in Nepal. Methods The CAPTURA project trained 97 laboratory personnel from 19 hospitals on the use of WHONET/BacLink software to manage microbiology data in Nepal during 2020–2021. Approximately two years later, the trainees were followed up by phone to assess implementation status and effectiveness of the training. An inductive approach was used for coding and categorization of their response, and themes were generated for analysis. Trainees from ten hospitals agreed to respond regarding their experience. Results We found that two out of the ten hospitals were using the WHONET/BacLink software, with one each within and outside the national AMR surveillance network. The remaining eight hospitals never implemented the system despite receiving the training. Key barriers to implementation included, hospital administration prioritizing other interoperable software, limited ongoing training, inability to export data from an LIS, limited real-time assistance with technical issues, and poor confidence in analyzing data. In addition, limited human resources and minimal capacity-building activities resulted in a lack of confidence in using the system independently, which were also identified as barriers. Conclusion Implementing WHONET/BacLink software in hospital settings can be challenging due to various factors, including a lack of knowledge and confidence among users, a lack of time and human resources to use the software effectively, and a lack of interoperability with other hospital management systems. Real-time support and follow-up activities potentially reinforce the skills and knowledge delivered during the training.

Bubble-Wall Plot as a Dynamic Analytical Processing Visualization Tool for Developing Visual Warning Systems: a Case Study
This paper proposes a dynamic analytical processing (DAP) visualization tool based on the Bubble-Wall Plot. It can be handily used to develop visual warning systems for visualizing the dynamic analytical processes of hazard data. Comparative analysis and case study methods are used in this research. Based on a literature review of Q1 publications since 2017, 23 types of data visualization approaches/tools are identified, including seven anomaly data visualization tools. This study presents three significant findings by comparing existing data visualization approaches. The primary finding is that no single visualization tool can fully satisfy industry requirements. This finding motivates academics to develop new DAP visualization tools. The second finding is that there are different views of Line Charts and various perspectives on Scatter Plots. The other one is that different researchers may perceive an existing data visualization tool differently, such as arguments between Scatter Plots and Line Charts and diverse opinions about Parallel Coordinate Plots and Scatter Plots. Users’ awareness rises when they choose data visualization tools that satisfy their requirements. By conducting a comparative analysis based on five categories (Style, Value, Change, Correlation, and Others) with 26 subcategories of metric features, results show that this new tool can effectively solve the limitations of existing visualization tools as it appears to have three remarkable characteristics: the simplest cartographic tool, the most straightforward visual result, and the most intuitive tool. Furthermore, this paper illustrates how the Bubble-Wall Plot can be effectively applied to develop a warning system for presenting dynamic analytical processes of hazard data in the coal mine. Lastly, this paper provides two recommendations, one implication, six research limitations, and eleven further study topics.

Subwavelength imaging using orbital angular momentum waves generated by metasurfaces
Abstract Using conventional imaging techniques, the maximum obtainable resolution of an object is limited to about half the wavelength of the incident light, a phenomenon known as the diffraction limit. This limitation poses significant challenges in fields requiring high-resolution imaging, such as microscopy and nanotechnology. In this paper, we address this challenge by designing a dielectric metasurface to generate an optical Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) orbital angular momentum (OAM) beam. This innovative approach leverages the unique properties of OAM beams to achieve imaging beyond the diffraction limit. The dielectric metasurface is meticulously engineered to control both the phase and amplitude of the output wave, enabling the generation of high-quality LG OAM beams. Unlike traditional near-field and far-field imaging techniques, our proposed method does not necessitate a restricted distance between the imaging system components, offering greater flexibility and practicality in various applications. To validate the performance of our method, we conducted comprehensive numerical simulations. The results demonstrate that the generated OAM beam can achieve a resolution of 0.29 times the incident wavelength, surpassing the conventional diffraction limit.

Research on the relationship between gaze anxiety, social media disorder, and perceived discrimination in medical students
Abstract To explore the current situation of gaze anxiety and its relation with social media disorder and perceived discrimination in medical students, this study aimed to provide insights for the reform of medical communication education. A cross-sectional design was adopted, 811 medical students were selected, and they were investigated with the Chinese version of gaze anxiety rating scale, the Chinese short version of social media disorder scale and perceived discrimination questionnaire in May 2022. The results revealed that medical students’ gaze anxiety was the highest in the daily dimension, and there was a statistically significant difference among different grades (F = 13.063, p < 0.001); gaze anxiety was positively correlated with social media disorder (r = 0.504, p < 0.01) and perceived discrimination (r = 0.505, p < 0.01); social media disorder has a direct positive effect on medical students’ gaze anxiety and may also indirectly influence it through perceived discrimination. The conclusion was that perceived discrimination can play a partial mediating role between gaze anxiety and social media disorder among medical students.
