Optimizing drone-based pollination method by using efficient target detection and path planning for complex durian orchards

Abstract Durian is a valuable tropical fruit whose pollination heavily relies on bats and nocturnal insects. However, environmental degradation and pesticide usage have reduced insect populations, leading to inefficient natural pollination. This study proposes an AI-powered drone-based pollination method for complex durian orchards, integrating improved object detection and optimized path planning. Specifically, we enhance the YOLO-v8 algorithm using the GhostNet lightweight network to reduce computational complexity while boosting detection precision. For path planning, we develop an Enhanced TSP (EN-TSP) algorithm based on a branch and bound strategy with least-cost optimization. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method improves detection accuracy by 5.85% and path efficiency by 26.89% compared to baseline algorithms. The novel use of GhostNet with YOLO-v8 enables superior detection of durian flowers under low-light and occluded conditions, while EN-TSP ensures globally optimal drone routes, reducing travel distance and improving operational reliability. This integrated solution advances smart agriculture by enabling scalable, efficient, and precise pollination, reducing labor costs and increasing durian yield and quality.

Multi-objective optimisation of path and space utilisation in landscape garden green space design

This study addresses the multi-objective optimization problem in landscape garden green space design, focusing on optimizing space utilization efficiency, path efficiency, and aesthetic quality. We compare various multi-objective optimization algorithms to solve the problem We compare various multi-objective optimization algorithms to solve the problem, applied to the urban environment of Tongzhou District, which is characterized by rapid urbanization and high population density. Experimental results demonstrate that MOEAs outperforms other optimization algorithms such as GA, PSO, ACO, and SA in all three objectives. Specifically, MOEAs achieved a space utilization efficiency of 90.2%, a path length of 140.3 m, and an aesthetic quality score of 9.2, surpassing the best results from GA (85.3%, 150.2 m, 8.4), PSO (88.5%, 148.6 m, 8.6), ACO (82.4%, 160.5 m, 7.9), and SA (80.1%, 162.4 m, 7.5). In conclusion, MOEAs provides a superior solution for optimizing landscape garden green space design, offering the best balance between spatial efficiency, path optimization, and aesthetic quality, particularly for urban areas like Tongzhou.

Breastfeeding complexities and sociocultural barriers in the context of preventing perinatal transmission of HIV: A descriptive phenomenology in Northern Ghana

Purpose Although World Health Organization (WHO) policies aim to promote exclusive breastfeeding and replacement feeding for HIV-exposed infants, limited research explores the social and cultural barriers encountered by mothers living with HIV in rural health facilities in Ghana. This study investigates the challenges associated with exclusive breastfeeding and, where feasible, alternative replacement feeding among mothers living with HIV in rural areas, with a specific focus on how cultural beliefs influence adherence to recommended breastfeeding guidelines. Methods This qualitative study was conducted in two rural community health facilities in Ghana, targeting mothers living with HIV who were actively seeking maternal and child health services. A purposive sampling technique was employed to ensure the inclusion of diverse experiences and perspectives, resulting in a sample of 32 respondents. Participants were selected based on their HIV status and engagement with maternal health services. Data collection involved in-depth interviews and interview guide as data collection tool designed to explore personal experiences and cultural influences on infant feeding practices. All interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using Colaizzi’s descriptive phenomenological approach, facilitated by NVivo 12 software to ensure systematic data management and theme identification. Results The study identified specific sociocultural barriers that hinder the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV in rural communities. Key themes included breastfeeding as a deeply rooted cultural practice, the customary use of water for infant feeding, traditional roles of mothers-in-law in infant care decisions, and food security concerns. Sub-themes further elaborated on breastfeeding as a long-standing tradition, perceived health benefits of breastfeeding, and respect for elders’ advice, among others. These cultural norms and beliefs were found to significantly influence adherence to exclusive breastfeeding and, where feasible, alternative replacement feeding guidelines among mothers living with HIV. Conclusions This study provides valuable insights into the sociocultural barriers affecting efforts to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV in Ghana rural areas. It highlights the need for culturally adaptive health policies and the development of community-based breastfeeding intervention programmes that align with traditional values while promoting safe feeding practices.

Abstract In this work, the control and amplification of microwaves in a T-shaped circular waveguide in the S-band using a plasma switch are simulated using Computer Simulation Technology (CST) software and the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method. We present an innovative configuration that integrates a plasma switch into a T-shaped circular waveguide, enabling real-time control of plasma parameters to enhance microwave reflection and amplification. We determine the ratio of RF frequency to argon plasma frequency in the collisional regime and investigate the interaction, resonance, and complete reflection of electromagnetic waves. The variations in wave amplitude at three ports (input, side, and output arms) after interaction with the plasma switch at different plasma densities are analyzed and compared. Additionally, we discuss the temporal evolution of the electric field within the waveguide at the moment of complete reflection. By optimizing physical parameters, the proposed configuration demonstrates effective control, reflection, and amplification of high-power waves at high repetition rates.
