Abstract Self-compassion has gained attention as an important factor for mental health. However, research on self-compassion in older adults is limited. This study aims to reveal the interactions among six self-compassion components in older adults and examine how productive engagement influences these components. A total of 807 older adults aged 55 and older in Hong Kong (67% females) participated in the study. They reported their self-compassion and productive engagement through questionnaires. Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to identify different patterns of productive engagement. The EBICglasso method estimated the self-compassion network for the overall sample and for different productive engagement patterns. The LCA results identified a group with low productive engagement (low productive engagement group) and three groups with engagement in certain productive activities (productive engagement group). The network analysis found that isolation was the central component in the overall sample and in the low productive engagement group. Mindfulness was the central component in the productive engagement group. A dual effect of productive engagement group reported that while it may enhance mindfulness, it might also contribute to the feeling of isolation. Further research is needed to explore these relationships in diverse sociocultural settings.

Upwelling is one of the major mechanisms responsible for the input of nutrients sustaining high levels of marine primary production. As a consequence of global change, variations in upwelling intensity may affect nutrient supply thus impacting marine food webs. In this study, we examine the effects of decadal variability of upwelling strength on nitrate supply and its influence on the nitrogen stable isotope composition at the base of the marine food web at the northern boundary of the Canary Current upwelling system (NW Spain) between 1989 and 2023. The study focused on the early upwelling season each year (March-June) to minimize the effects of nitrogen remineralization. Intertidal macroalgae (Phaeophyceae) and mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) were used as proxies for temporally integrated isotopic signals of nitrogen sources (δ15N). While no significant temporal trends for either upwelling strength, nitrate concentrations, or stable isotopes were found, three periods with characteristic upwelling and nutrient regimes were identified. A linear increase in δ15N, particularly in Fucus spp., associated with a decreasing contribution of upwelling-derived nitrogen suggest the influence of additional sources, likely of anthropogenic origin. Thus, no net change in productivity would be expected in this region despite quasi-decadal shifts in upwelling dynamics. Further insights on the origin and relevance of these sources can be gained through the investigation of river and runoff inputs and the use of more sensitive tracers, such as amino acid δ15N analysis in mussels.

The dynamic connectedness among infectious diseases, geopolitical risks, cryptocurrency, and commodity markets: Evidence from a partial and multiple wavelet analysis
This study investigates the co-movements between prominent financial assets—crude oil, natural gas, gold, and Bitcoin—and uncertainty indices, including the Infectious Disease Equity Market Volatility Tracker (IDEMV) and the Geopolitical Risk Index (GPR), from January 2017 to January 2023. By employing advanced wavelet techniques—Wavelet Power Spectrum (WPS), Bi-Wavelet Coherence (WCA), Multiple Wavelet Coherence (MWC), and Partial Wavelet Coherence (PWC)—we analyze their time- and frequency-dependent responses to market shocks. The results reveal that Bitcoin and WTI exhibit time-varying sensitivity to IDEMV, particularly at short- and medium-term frequencies, highlighting their vulnerability to health-related crises like COVID-19. In contrast, gold and natural gas respond more strongly to GPR, with gold demonstrating a long-term leading role during geopolitical uncertainties, while Bitcoin and WTI lead in health-related shocks. The Russia-Ukraine conflict further amplified GPR’s impact on Bitcoin and increased natural gas’s vulnerability to geopolitical disruptions. These findings underscore the need for tailored strategies to address health and geopolitical risks. Policymakers should enhance crisis-response frameworks for Bitcoin and crude oil, while investors can reduce uncertainty by diversifying portfolios with resilient assets like gold and natural gas.
