Dissociative ionization cross sections of isobutanol

Abstract The electron impact partial ionization cross sections (PICS) for isobutanol were calculated using variants of the binary encounter Bethe model (BEB). The modified BEB (m-BEB) model and the mass spectrum dependent (MSD) method are used to calculate the PICS of cationic fragments of isobutanol due to electron impact. In the absence of any other data for isobutanol, the present PICS is compared with the PICS data for other isomers of butanol. We also presented the calculated electron impact mass spectrum of isobutanol, 1-butanol, and 2-butanol that is compared with the experimental mass spectrum data. Such data could be useful in the absence of any other experimental data and can be used to estimate the theoretical PICS of the molecules. Moreover, the theoretical EIMS data from quantum chemical mass spectrometry (QCxMS2) method has been used to compute the PICS of the cations.

Examining the interplay between sdLDL, resistin, and BMI

Abstract Obesity is a major risk factor for many chronic diseases and is becoming a serious global health problem. Poor health outcomes are closely linked to body mass index (BMI). In obesity, changes in small dense low-density lipoprotein (sdLDL) may increase its ability to penetrate the endothelium, leading to atherosclerosis. Obesity also affects the metabolic and secretory functions of many tissues, which may raise serum resistin levels. This study included 300 participants with different BMI levels. We measured sdLDL and resistin in all participants. HbA1c was tested using whole blood in EDTA tubes. Serum from thawed samples was used to measure lipid parameters (triglycerides, cholesterol, HDL, LDL, VLDL, sdLDL) and resistin levels were analysed using ELISA. Obese participants had significantly higher HbA1c ( p  = 0.0004), LDL ( p  < 0.0001), triglycerides ( p  < 0.0001), cholesterol ( p  < 0.0001), and VLDL ( p  < 0.0001) compared to overweight and normal BMI groups, except for HDL, which was not significantly different. Smokers and participants with hypertension showed higher sdLDL ( p  = 0.03, p  = 0.0001) and resistin levels ( p  = 0.03, p  < 0.0001). Overweight participants had sdLDL levels of 21.95 mg/dl, while obese participants had 25.76 mg/dl, both significantly higher than the normal BMI group ( p  < 0.0001 for both). Resistin levels were also higher in overweight (1003 pg/mL) and obese participants (1355 pg/mL) compared to the normal BMI group ( p  < 0.0001 for p  < 0.0001 ). SdLDL and resistin showed a positive correlation with each other and were significantly associated with BMI, systolic blood pressure, triglycerides, cholesterol, VLDL, and LDL, but negatively associated with HDL. ROC analysis indicated that sdLDL (cutoff: 18.55 mg/dl) and resistin (cutoff: 750 pg/mL) could serve as prognostic markers for overweight and obesity. Additionally, participants with normal BMI had resistin levels of 389.6 pg/mL, overweight participants had 300.6 pg/mL ( p  < 0.0001), and obese participants had 291.0 pg/mL ( p  < 0.0001). This study suggests that resistin and sdLDL levels are the primary cause of dyslipidemia and metabolic dysregulation in obesity. Both biomarkers are strong predictors of a higher BMI category, with resistin being a universal risk factor and sdLDL showing a male-specific correlation. Additionally, their high predictive accuracy confirms the usefulness of sdLDL and resistin as biomarkers for early risk assessment and shows how they can guide early intervention strategies for metabolic and cardiovascular risk linked to obesity.

Abstract Soft cheeses provide an ideal matrix for bacterial growth, serving as a medium for inoculating starter microorganisms like Lactobacillus. This study aimed to evaluate the biochemical, histopathological, and immunohistochemical effects of white soft cheese inoculated with Lactobacillus helveticus , Lactobacillus rhamnosus , and Streptococcus thermophilus S3855 on male reproductive health in albino rats. Forty male Albino rats, divided into five isolated groups, and fed white soft cheese prepared with different bacterial strains or non-inoculated cheese (control) for 28 days. The prepared cheese was pickled for four weeks at refrigerator temperature and analyzed for chemical and microbiological properties at 7, 14, 21, and 28 days. Total solids decreased over time, while protein-to-dry matter ratios increased across all treatments. Biochemically, all treated groups showed reduced serum total cholesterol, with the most significant triglyceride reduction in group V. Histopathological analysis revealed notable structural damage in testicular tissue, including degeneration of seminiferous tubules, vascular abnormalities, and a marked decrease in seminiferous tubule diameter and spermatogenic cell counts. Johnsen-like scores were significantly lower, particularly in groups III, IV, and V, indicating impaired spermatogenesis compared with the normal control. Immunohistochemically, strong Bax expression was observed in all treated groups, indicating enhanced apoptotic activity. Additionally, wide spread Plexin-B1 expression was also detected in all treated groups. These findings indicate that probiotic-enriched soft cheese may negatively affect male reproductive health, possibly through apoptosis-mediated pathways.

Associations between identity perception, symptom severity, and quality of life in adolescents with ADHD

Abstract Adolescence is a key stage for identity formation. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that significantly affects adolescents’ daily functioning and quality of life and plays an important role in shaping their identity. Illness identity refers to the extent to which a chronic diagnosis is integrated into an individual’s self-concept. This study examined how ADHD symptom severity relates to diagnosis identity dimensions and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in adolescents with ADHD. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 154 adolescents aged 11 to 18 years ( M  = 15.40, SD  = 1.83). Participants completed validated measures of ADHD symptom severity, diagnosis identity ( engulfment , rejection , acceptance , enrichment ), and HRQoL. Statistical analyses included correlations, regression, and mediation models to clarify the relationships among these variables. Acceptance was significantly higher than other identity dimensions, while engulfment and rejection were lower. Higher ADHD symptom severity, especially inattention, was linked to greater engulfment. Engulfment predicted lower quality of life more strongly than symptom severity itself, and positive social experiences supported healthier identity integration. Mediation analysis showed that only engulfment significantly explained the link between symptom severity and HRQoL. Findings highlight the role of diagnosis identity, particularly engulfment, in the well-being of adolescents with ADHD. Interventions that combine symptom management with identity-focused approaches and social support may more effectively enhance adolescents’ outcomes.

A needle-form 3-omega sensor for thermal conductivity measurements of soft materials and biological tissues

Abstract Soft materials, liquids, and biological tissues are of increasing interest as thermal materials for applications in energy storage, electrical/electrochemical systems, and cryopreservation, but thermal characterization of these materials can be challenging experimentally. Here, we extend the robust 3-omega method, which is traditionally based on a planar form factor with external sample contact, to a microfabricated needle-form sensor that can be plunged directly into a sample. We further demonstrate the reusability of this sensor, the ability to easily make thermal contact by plunging the sensor into the center of a sample, and the ability to sample systems undergoing phase transformations. We do so via application to solid ice as well as 4 representative materials at room temperature: water, glycerol, paraffin, and chicken liver, thereby demonstrating the sensor’s utility for liquids, soft solid materials, and phase change materials. Data analysis is conducted by fitting to a three dimensional numerical model of the sensor and sample. These experiments show very good agreement of within 3% of literature values for thermal conductivity for the explored materials, which range in thermal conductivity from approximately 0.3 W/mK to 2.3 W/mK.
