Integrated metabolite profiling and molecular docking reveal anti-aging potential of Clerodendrum infortunatum L. fractions

Abstract Skin aging is a complex and irreversible natural process impacted by genetics, lifestyle, and environmental variables, leading to wrinkles, loss of elasticity, and uneven skin tone. There is a growing demand for natural skincare products, which are perceived as safer, more sustainable, and effective in combating the signs of aging. Clerodendrum infortunatum ( C. infortunatum ) Linn. (Family Lamiaceae) has traditional medicinal uses, including hepatoprotection, antimicrobial, and vermifuge activity, as well as benefits in alleviating inflammation, arthritis, and diabetes. This study aims to investigate the metabolites present in different solvent-extracted fractions of the aerial parts of C. infortunatum through liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) profiling, and to evaluate their anti-aging potential using in vitro anti-collagenase and anti-elastase assays. The correlation between the identified metabolites and bioactivity was investigated using a partial least squares (PLS) chemometric approach. To confirm these findings, molecular docking studies were performed to assess the inhibitory potential of the metabolites most strongly correlated with bioactivity against elastase and collagenase target enzymes. This study is the first to correlate the secondary metabolites of C. infortunatum solvent-extracted fractions with their newly discovered anti-aging properties, representing a significant contribution to the field. Additionally, it presents the first molecular docking analysis of salsaside A, jionoside C, and 6′-caffeoyl-12-glucosyloxy-jasmonic acid against collagenase and elastase enzymes, revealing significant binding affinities and promising inhibitory potential. These findings underscore the potential of these metabolites as novel anti-aging compounds through their strong interactions with key target enzymes.

Mechanical behavior of deteriorated unbonded prestressed concrete hollow slabs

Scientific Reports Xiaobin Li, Shuanke Zhou, Baoshan Xiang et al. Apr 22, 2026 DOI: 10.1038/s41598-026-49044-7

Abstract This study investigates the residual mechanical behavior of deteriorated unbonded prestressed concrete hollow slabs extracted from a 20-year-old highway bridge. Three full-scale slabs were tested under four-point bending to evaluate cracking resistance, load-bearing capacity, failure modes, anchorage performance, and material degradation. The exterior slab exhibited a cracking load of only 190 kN, just 12% above the design service load, indicating significantly reduced crack resistance. Failure loads ranged from 529 to 581 kN, with corresponding deflections between 287.7 and 413.6 mm. Two slabs failed prematurely due to tendon rupture at the anchorage, with ductility coefficients reduced by up to 30% compared to the ductile failure observed in Slab 1. Anchorage efficiency coefficients ranged from 0.84 to 0.88, below the code requirement of 0.95, and tendon elongation at maximum load was only 1.0–1.4%, far below the 2% minimum standard. In contrast, concrete, reinforcement, and tendons remained largely intact, with concrete compressive strength reaching 61.8 MPa, exceeding the design requirement. The residual flexural capacity decreased by 3.2–5.2% relative to theoretical values, primarily due to anchorage deterioration rather than material aging. These findings quantify the dominant role of anchorage degradation in reducing structural performance and provide critical data for assessing and rehabilitating aging unbonded PC hollow-slab bridges.

Synthesis, surface activities, aggregation properties and oil washing performances of novel cardanol-based surfactants

PLoS ONE Weiyang Liu, Congying Lu, Xin Zhao et al. Apr 22, 2026 DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0344255

A mixed cardanol sulfonate surfactant (MYBS) of disubstituted styrene unsaturated cardanol sulfonate (2,4-YBS) and monosubstituted styrene unsaturated cardanol sulfonate (2-YBS) was synthesized by optimizing the optimal synthesis conditions of the three-step reaction of alkylation, sulfonation and neutralization. The molar percentages of the two are about 70%: 30%. Its structure was characterized by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and infrared spectroscopy. At 25 °C, the surface tension of MYBS at critical micelle concentration (γCMC) and critical micelle concentration (CMC) was 33.32 mN/m and 0.676 mmol/L, respectively, which was better than that of traditional anionic surfactant (SDBS) and cardanol sulfonate surfactant (CDS). The thermodynamic parameters obtained from the conductivity measurements confirmed that the micellization process was a spontaneous and entropy-driven process. Dynamic light scattering test and transmission electron microscopy showed that MYBS molecules could form small spherical micelles of 10 nm-30 nm, which was consistent with the calculation results of critical packing theory. At the same time, the oil washing experiment confirmed that the oil washing efficiency can reach 73%, which provides technical support for the application of this kind of surfactant in improving oil recovery.
