A study on the overall variance and void architecture on MEX-PLA tensile properties through printing parameter optimisation

Abstract This study investigates the influence of printing parameters on the tensile properties and void architecture of poly(lactic) acid (PLA) parts fabricated using the fused filament fabrication (FFF) technique. Two Taguchi optimisation methods were employed to identify the optimal parameter combinations for maximising tensile performance. The results revealed a positive correlation between tensile performance and nozzle diameter (ND). Notably, the analysis of the coefficient of variance (COV) studies revealed that both tensile strength and modulus exhibited minimal variation within a tight range of 5.5%, suggesting a high degree of process consistency in achieving desired mechanical properties regardless of the chosen parameters within the investigated range. Micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) analysis was used to quantify void characteristics within the as-printed samples. Micro-CT analysis confirmed the influence of ND and layer thickness (LT) on void architecture. By establishing structure–property relationships, the study revealed that larger NDs paired with finer LTs yielded superior tensile properties due to reduced void content. This work highlights the interplay between printing parameters, void architecture, and the resulting mechanical behaviour of MEX-based PLA parts.

Stable laser-acceleration of high-flux proton beams with plasma collimation

Abstract Laser-plasma acceleration of protons offers a compact, ultra-fast alternative to conventional acceleration techniques, and is being widely pursued for potential applications in medicine, industry and fundamental science. Creating a stable, collimated beam of protons at high repetition rates presents a key challenge. Here, we demonstrate the generation of multi-MeV proton beams from a fast-replenishing ambient-temperature liquid sheet. The beam has an unprecedentedly low divergence of 1° (≤20 mrad), resulting from magnetic self-guiding of the proton beam during propagation through a low density vapour. The proton beams, generated at a repetition rate of 5 Hz using only 190 mJ of laser energy, exhibit a hundred-fold increase in flux compared to beams from a solid target. Coupled with the high shot-to-shot stability of this source, this represents a crucial step towards applications.

Migratory birds benefit from urban environments in a highly anthropized Neotropical region

Land use change from wildlands to urban and productive environments can dramatically transform ecosystem structure and processes. Despite their structural and functional differences from wildlands, human-modified environments offer unique habitat elements for wildlife. In this study, we examined how migratory birds use urban, productive, and wildland environments of a highly anthropized region of Western Mexico known as “El Bajío”. We used Generalized Linear Models to compare species richness, abundance, and the functional traits of migratory bird assemblages among these three environments. Results revealed differences in species richness, composition, and the functional traits of migratory birds among environments. Regardless of wildlands showing medium to high levels of human disturbance, they presented the highest species richness and abundance of migratory birds, with urban environments presenting the lowest values. Insectivorous and granivorous birds were dominant in the migratory bird assemblages of the three environments. The migratory bird assemblages of productive environments had more grassland granivorous birds. In contrast, insectivorous birds with dense habitat preferences and short culmen lengths dominated the urban bird assemblage. Migratory bird assemblages in productive and urban environments showed similar species richness and abundance of insectivorous birds, but they differ in their composition. Our results reveal that urban trees allowed cities to function as simplified forests, showing that the urban environment has the untapped potential to support complex assemblages of migratory birds. To promote migratory birds in human-modified landscapes, we must maintain complex vegetation areas that allow birds with diverse functional traits to overwinter in urban and productive environments.

Factors associated with malnutrition inflammation score among hemodialysis patients: A cross-sectional investigation in tertiary care hospital, Palestine

Malnutrition is a prevalent complication in hemodialysis patients and is associated with increased mortality and morbidity. This study aimed to identify the risk factors associated with malnutrition among hemodialysis patients including patient’s general characteristics, functional status, and dietary intake. This study involved hemodialysis patients in An-Najah National University Hospital at Nablus/Palestine. An interview-based questionnaire was used to collect data related to sociodemographic, lifestyle, hemodialysis, medical history, anthropometrics, biochemical indices, dietary data using 3-days diet recall, and functional status. Malnutrition-inflammation score tool (MIS) was used for malnutrition screening of the studied patients. The study involved 188 patients, with a mean age of 57.8±14 years. A total of 28.2% participants are reported malnourished. Malnutrition was significantly associated with being female (p = 0.001), unemployed (p = 0.009), nonsmoker or ex-smoker (p = 0.018). Patients with CVDs (p = 0.006), higher months on dialysis (p = 0.002), lower BMI (p = 0.018), and using catheter for dialysis access are more likely to develop malnutrition (p = 0.018). Furthermore, patients with poor functional status (poor handgrip strength (p<0.001), inability to walk (p<0.001), needing help in daily activity or in transfer (p<0.001)) were significantly associated with malnutrition. Additionally, malnutrition was significantly higher among patients who does not meet their recommended calorie intake (p = 0.008), whose sodium intake within recommendation (p = 0.049), patients with low levels of hemoglobin (p = 0.022), albumin (p<0.001), TIBC (p = 0.002), phosphate (p<0.001), and patients with higher levels of ferritin (p<0.001). Higher months on dialysis (Exp(B) = 1.02), unmet calorie intake (Exp(B) = 4.3), needing help in daily activities (Exp(B) = 0.238), and low albumin level (Exp(B) = 0.048) were the independent predictors of malnutrition. This study highlights the significant association between malnutrition and various demographic, clinical, functional, and dietary factors in hemodialysis patients, revealing the burden of malnutrition during HD. It also necessitates targeted intervention to address these risk factors and improve nutritional status and the overall health outcomes of HD patients.

The TLR7/9 adaptors TASL and TASL2 mediate IRF5-dependent antiviral responses and autoimmunity in mouse

Abstract Endosomal nucleic acid sensing by Toll-like receptors (TLRs) is central to antimicrobial immunity and several autoimmune conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The innate immune adaptor TASL mediates, via the interaction with SLC15A4, the activation of IRF5 downstream of human TLR7, TLR8 and TLR9, but the pathophysiological functions of this axis remain unexplored. Here we show that SLC15A4 deficiency results in a selective block of TLR7/9-induced IRF5 activation, while loss of TASL leads to a strong but incomplete impairment, which depends on the cell type and TLR engaged. This residual IRF5 activity is ascribed to a previously uncharacterized paralogue, Gm6377, named here TASL2. Double knockout of TASL and TASL2 (TASLDKO) phenocopies SLC15A4-deficient feeble mice showing comparable impairment of innate and humoral responses. Consequently, TASLDKO mice fail to control chronic LCMV infection, while being protected in a pristane-induced SLE disease model. Our study thus demonstrates the critical pathophysiological role of SLC15A4 and TASL/TASL2 for TLR7/9-driven inflammatory responses, further supporting the therapeutic potential of targeting this complex in SLE and related diseases.

Exploring effector protein dynamics and natural fungicidal potential in rice blast pathogen Magnaporthe oryzae

Rice blast, caused by Magnaporthe oryzae, is one of the most destructive fungal diseases in rice, resulting in major economic losses worldwide. Genetic and genomic studies have identified key genes and proteins, such as AvrPik variants and MAX proteins, that are crucial for the pathogen’s virulence. These effector proteins interact with specific alleles of the Pik gene family on rice chromosome 11, modulating the host’s immune response. In this study, we investigated 35 plant-derived metabolites known for their antifungal properties as potential fungicides against M. oryzae. Using molecular docking, we identified Hecogenin and Cucurbitacin E as strong binders to MAX40 and APIKL2A proteins, which are essential for the fungus’s immune evasion and pathogenicity. Molecular dynamics simulations further confirmed that these compounds form stable, strong interactions with the target proteins, validating their potential as therapeutic agents. Additionally, the compounds were evaluated based on Lipinski’s rule of five and toxicity predictions, indicating their suitability for agricultural use. These results suggest that Hecogenin and Cucurbitacin E could serve as promising lead candidates in the development of novel fungicides for rice blast, offering new strategies for crop protection and sustainable agricultural practices.

Real sounds influence postural stability in people with vestibular loss but not in healthy controls

Objective What we hear may influence postural control, particularly in people with vestibular hypofunction. Would hearing a moving subway destabilize people similarly to seeing the train move? We investigated how people with unilateral vestibular hypofunction and healthy controls incorporated broadband and real-recorded sounds with visual load for balance in an immersive contextual scene. Design Participants stood on foam placed on a force-platform, wore the HTC Vive headset, and observed an immersive subway environment. Each 60-second condition repeated twice: static or dynamic visual with no sound or static white noise or real recorded subway station sounds [real] played from headphones. Setting Human motion laboratory. Participants 41 healthy controls (mean age 52 years, range 22–78) and 28 participants with unilateral peripheral vestibular hypofunction (mean age 61.5, 27–82) Main outcome measures We collected center-of-pressure (COP, anterior-posterior, medio-lateral) from the force-platform and head (anterior-posterior, medio-lateral, pitch, yaw, roll) from the headset and quantified root mean square velocity (cm/s or rad/s) Results Adjusting for age, the vestibular group showed significantly more sway than controls on: COP medio-lateral (no sound or real with static or dynamic visual); COP anterior-posterior (only on dynamic visuals in the presence of either sound); head medio-lateral and anterior-posterior (all conditions), head pitch and yaw (only on dynamic visuals in the presence of either sound). A significant increase in sway with sounds was observed for the vestibular group only on dynamic visuals COP anterior-posterior and head yaw (real) and head anterior-posterior and pitch (either sound). Conclusions The addition of auditory stimuli, particularly contextually-accurate sounds, to a challenging, standing balance task in real-life simulation increased sway in people with vestibular hypofunction but not in healthy controls. Tuberculosis treatment outcomes and associated factors among patients treated at Bosaso TB Hospital, Bosaso, Somalia: A five-year retrospective study

Introduction Tuberculosis remains a major public health problem, primarily in low- and middle-income countries. Evaluating treatment outcomes and investigating factors associated with them are essential for the treatment and control of tuberculosis. Hence, this study aims to assess the TB treatment outcomes and associated factors in Bosaso, Puntland, Somalia. Methods A 5-year facility-based retrospective study was conducted at Bosaso TB Hospital, from January 2018 to December 2022. A total of 2213 TB patients were included in this study. Demographic, clinical characteristics and treatment outcome data were gathered from the TB register using a structured checklist. Data were entered, cleaned, and analyzed using SPSS version 20. Descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression analysis were employed. A P-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results The overall successful treatment rate was 88.5%. The TB treatment success rate over the last three years was comparable to the global target of the End TB strategy of ≥ 90% by 2025. Patients aged 21–40 years (AOR = 0.59, 95% Cl = 0.41–0.84, p = 0.004), 41–60 years (AOR = 0.37, 95% CI = 0.25–0.55, p < 0.001), and ≥ 61 years (AOR = 0.37, 95% CI = 0.22–0.64, p < 0.001) were less likely to achieve successful treatment outcomes. Being HIV-positive (AOR = 0.41, 95% Cl = 0.21–0.79, p = 0.008) was less likely to be associated with a successful treatment outcome. Conclusion In this study, the TB treatment success rate over the last three years was comparable to the global target of the End-TB strategy of ≥ 90% by 2025. Therefore, we recommend strengthening the TB care system, conducting regular supportive supervision for TB facilities, implementing strategies to encourage drug adherence, strengthening mechanisms to minimize the anti-TB treatment default rate, improving counseling services, and giving more attention to the vulnerable age groups and HIV-positive patients.

Dietary fiber content in clinical ketogenic diets modifies the gut microbiome and seizure resistance in mice

Abstract The gut microbiome modulates the anti-seizure effects of the ketogenic diet, but how specific dietary formulations differentially modify the gut microbiome in ways that impact seizure outcome is poorly understood. We find that medical ketogenic infant formulas vary in macronutrient ratio, fat source, and fiber content and differentially promote resistance to 6-Hz seizures in mice. Dietary fiber, rather than fat ratio or source, drives substantial metagenomic shifts in a model human infant microbial community. Addition of fiber to a fiber-deficient ketogenic formula restores seizure resistance, and supplementing protective formulas with excess fiber potentiates seizure resistance. By screening 13 fiber sources and types, we identify metagenomic responses in the model community that correspond with increased seizure resistance. Supplementing with seizure-protective fibers enriches microbial genes related to queuosine biosynthesis and preQ 0 biosynthesis and decreases genes related to sucrose degradation and TCA cycle, which are also seen in seizure-protected mice that are fed fiber-containing ketogenic formulas. This study reveals that different formulations of ketogenic diets, and dietary fiber content in particular, differentially impact seizure outcome in mice, likely by modifying the gut microbiome. Understanding interactions between diet, microbiome, and host susceptibility to seizures could inform novel microbiome-guided approaches to treat refractory epilepsy.

Factors associated with uptake and acceptability of cervical cancer screening among female sex workers in Northeastern Uganda: A cross-sectional study

Background Cervical cancer screening program in Uganda is opportunistic and focuses mainly on women aged 25–49 years. Female sex workers (FSWs) are at increased risk of developing invasive cervical cancer. There is limited data regarding the uptake and acceptability of cervical cancer screening among FSWs in Uganda. This study aimed at identifying factors associated with uptake and acceptability of cervical cancer screening among FSWs in Eastern Uganda. Methods This was a cross-sectional study conducted among 423 FSWs aged 18–49 years attending care at six health facilities serving Key Populations (FSWs, Men who have sex with men, transgender people, people who inject drugs and people in prisons) in the Teso sub-region. Data was collected using structured investigator administered questionnaire and analyzed using Stata statistical software version 15.0 (Stata Corp, Texas, USA). The primary outcome was uptake of cervical cancer screening measured as the proportion of female sex workers who have ever been screened for cervical cancer. Chi-square test was used to compare the differences in uptake of cervical cancer screening by HIV status. Modified Poisson regression model with a robust variance estimator was used to determine association between the outcome variables and selected independent variables including demographic characteristics. Prevalence ratios (PR) with accompanying 95% confidence intervals have been reported. Statistical significance was considered at two-sided p-values ≤ 0.05. Results The mean age of the participants was 28.1 (±SD = 6.6) years. The self-reported HIV prevalence was 21.5% (n = 91). There were 138 (32.6%) participants who had ever been screened for cervical cancer (uptake), while 397 (93.9%) were willing to be screened (acceptability). There was a significant difference in cervical cancer screening uptake between women living with HIV (WLHIV) and those who were HIV negative, 59.3% vs 26.9% respectively (P < 0.001). The significant factors associated with uptake of cervical cancer screening included living with HIV, adjusted prevalence ratio (aPR) = 1.53 (95%CI: 1.15–2.07), increasing number of biological children, aPR = 1.14 (1.06–1.24) living near a private not for profit (PNFP) facility, aPR = 2.84 (95% CI; 1.68–4.80) and availability of screening services at the nearest health facility, aPR = 1.83 (95% CI, 1.30–2.57). Factors significantly associated with acceptability of cervical cancer screening included being 40 years or older, aPR = 1.22 (95%CI: 1.01–1.47), having a family history of cervical cancer, aPR = 1.05 (1.01–1.10), and living near a PNFP facility, aPR = 1.17 (95% CI, 1.09–1.27) and having ever screened before, aPR = 0.92 (0.86–0.98). Conclusion Female sex workers living with HIV are more likely to screen for cervical cancer than the HIV negative clients. Cervical cancer screening uptake is relatively low among the female sex workers. However, majority of the FSWs are willing to be screened for cervical cancer if the services are provided in the nearby healthcare facilities. There is need to make cervical cancer screening services available to all eligible women especially the female sex workers and integrate the services with sexual reproductive health services in general and not just HIV/ART clinics services.
