Abstract The Cluster of Excellence ‘Centre for Tactile Internet with Human-in-the-Loop (CeTI)’1 addresses developments and inventions for the use in or as smart devices in many areas, such as Industry 4.0, medicine and skill learning. The application of sensor units in smart textiles is widespread and used in various industry branches. Besides sensors, the development of textile actuating units is a relevant research topic. This paper discusses a theoretical actuator concept that leads to a ready-to-implement fiber-based electrostatic brake concept (passive actuator). Generally, the set-up is similar to a capacitor. Two different variants are presented according to the design of the dielectric and outer electrode layer. The dielectric material, its thickness, manufacturing process, future properties and implementation possibilities of the concepts are considered. Finally, a proof of concept with first results is presented.

Abstract First principle simulations within the framework of the finite-temperature density functional formalism predict the existence of nonthermal phase transitions in gold on ultrafast timescales with increasing electron temperature. The Gibbs free energy phase diagram as a function of electronic temperature indicates two solid-solid phase transitions of fcc $$\rightarrow$$ hcp at an electronic temperature of 1.2 eV and hcp $$\rightarrow$$ bcc at an electron temperature of 6.8 eV, while the ion lattice remains cold at zero temperature. We present a detailed analysis of the process of phonon-hardening in ultrafast-heated gold, using finite-temperature density functional perturbation theory simulations of the phonon spectra, the quantum thermodynamic phase diagram, and the thermoelastic properties.

Abstract Religious and spiritual (R/S) struggles, such as questioning of faith, existential and ethical concerns, and interpersonal conflicts, are associated with depressive symptoms. Neuroinflammation is critical in major depressive disorder (MDD) and is linked to stress associated with R/S problems. This study aimed to investigate whether the presence of DSM-5 R/S problems contributes to neuroinflammation. We recruited 93 MDD patients and 93 healthy controls with and without R/S problems. MRI-based restricted fraction (RF) values, an index of neuroinflammation, were measured in the hippocampus, amygdala, and neocortex. Depression and anxiety were assessed using the Hamilton Depression and Anxiety Rating Scales (HAM-D, HAM-A), while R/S problems were quantified using the Religious and Spiritual Struggles Scale (RSS-14). Results revealed elevated RF values in the amygdala and hippocampus of healthy individuals and MDD patients with R/S problems relative to those without R/S problems, with the highest values in MDD patients with R/S problems. Importantly, R/S problems and depressive symptoms were independent predictors of RF values in the amygdala and hippocampus but not in the cortex. Elevated cortical RF values were associated with MDD. These findings indicate that R/S struggles are not secondary manifestations of depression but may independently contribute to neurobiological changes.

Abstract As wireless sensor networks (WSNs) with Internet of Things (IoT) devices become increasingly widespread and more complex, the threat of cyber-attacks is also increasing. One of the most common ways WSNs can be hijacked is when passwords/IDs are leaked. If the passwords do not frequently change, it is easier for the system to be compromised. However, many organizations and individuals retain old passwords to avoid the hassle and challenge of continually remembering and managing new passwords. COSMO-PASS is a new technique that combines COSMOCAT and CTC to enable hardware-level protection of the WSN nodes. It removes the inconvenience of having its users create, remember, and change multiple passwords. Based on the test experiments and simulations with a 10 2 -cm 2 -sized (a smartphone-sized) detector, 6–7-digit passwords are automatically generated and transferred to the sensor node within the time range from 1 s to 1 min, depending on the nodal distance (10–50 cm). Consequently, it is confirmed that automatically generated and frequent password updates are possible with COSMO-PASS, which will effectively protect the data and network. Although applications of COSMO-PASS are limited to a short range, since users do not have to know or physically input the password to their system, the phishing risk is greatly mitigated. It is anticipated that the enhanced security level capabilities of COSMO-PASS can easily be applied to the next generation of secured short-haul wireless sensor networks to achieve the realization of safer and smarter communities.
