The impact of sleep health on cardiovascular and all-cause mortality in the general population
Abstract Sleep patterns are important predictors of long-term health outcomes. We investigated the associations of sleep duration, sleep regularity, and their combinations with all-cause mortality and cardiovascular events in a large Korean cohort, including sex-specific analyses. This prospective cohort study included 9,641 adults aged 40–69 years from the Ansung–Ansan cohort in Korea. Participants were categorized by self-reported sleep duration (< 7 h, 7–8 h, or > 8 h) and regularity (regular vs. irregular). Outcomes included all-cause mortality and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) over a median follow-up of 186 months, during which 1,095 deaths and 811 MACE occurred. Sleep duration > 8 h was associated with increased all-cause mortality (adjusted hazard ratio [HR], 1.27; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.04–1.54). Combined analysis showed higher mortality in those with < 7 h and irregular sleep (adjusted HR, 1.28; 95% CI, 1.04–1.58) and > 8 h and regular sleep (adjusted HR, 1.26; 95% CI, 1.01–1.58). In sex-specific analyses, sleep duration and regularity were differentially associated with mortality. In women, > 8 h of irregular sleep was associated with increased risk, while in men, < 7 h of irregular or > 8 h of regular sleep showed similar associations. These findings support tailored strategies considering both sleep characteristics and sex.
Enhancing the performance of recycled aggregate concrete through optimized pretreatment methods: a microstructural perspective
Abstract Using recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) in new concrete production presents a sustainable solution to construction waste challenges, yet the inherent weaknesses of the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between old and new cement matrices remain a critical limitation. This study evaluates three industrially feasible pretreatment methods—sieve-washing, water immersion, and resin impregnation - through a novel combination of semi-quantitative microstructural analysis and durability testing. Our findings demonstrate that resin treatment reduces carbonation depth by 38% compared to untreated RCA, primarily through pore structure modification. At the same time, water immersion enhances ITZ density by optimizing moisture release during hydration. However, resin-treated aggregates exhibited significantly lower compressive strength due to poor adhesion of the new paste. After 28 days, concrete with saturated recycled aggregate showed similar compressive (49.1 ± 0.7 MPa) and flexural strength (5.8 ± 0.3 MPa), but slightly higher carbonation depth than the concrete with only natural aggregate. The calcium concentration at a distance from the recycled grain indicates that saturated and resin pre-treatment influence the ITZ’s density best. The research establishes a practical framework for selecting pretreatment methods based on measurable ITZ characteristics and project-specific durability requirements, advancing academic understanding and practical implementation of sustainable concrete technologies.

Intron turnover of slc26a1 and slc26a2 and convergence of intron insertion sites
Abstract Intron gain and loss are rare events in vertebrates; however, comparative genome analysis of elephant sharks, tetrapods, and teleosts revealed a higher level of intron turnover in teleosts. slc26a1 and slc26a2 are members of the anion-exchanger gene family. Human, zebrafish, and Japanese pufferfish slc26a1 consist of two, two, and seven exons, respectively, and slc26a2, two, three, and four exons, respectively. To better understand intron turnover in teleosts, we analyzed the exon–intron organization of slc26a1 and slc26a2 in 81 vertebrates, including 62 ray-finned fish. In most Eurypterygii, which comprise the majority of the Neoteleostei and include Acanthomorpha, Aulopiformes, and Myctophiformes, slc26a1 and slc26a2 have seven and four exons, respectively, whereas those of most other ray-finned fishes consist of two and three exons, respectively, suggesting that intron gain occurred in both slc26a1 and slc26a2 of the Eurypterygii ancestor. In addition, notothenioid slc26a2 has six exons, suggesting that two introns were inserted into the notothenioid ancestor. The two newly acquired introns in the notothenioid consist of transposon-like sequences, suggesting that they were generated via transposon insertion. The positions of some of the newly acquired introns of slc26a1 and slc26a2 in Eurypterygii are identical or very close to those of other slc26 members. These results demonstrate the lineage-specific intron gains of slc26a1 and slc26a2 in ray-finned fish and convergence at the insertion sites of some of the newly acquired introns.
Investigation on the broadband active filtering characteristics of plasma composited frequency selective surface structure
Structure design of unidirectional moisture transfer fabric with high wool content based on multiple differential effects
Abstract The natural functions of wool fiber, such as natural air permeability, dryness of skin contact, have advantages in the development of sports fabric. So far, the development of unidirectional moisture transfer fabric with high content wool is not yet mature. This paper novelly designed a ply yarn formed by different content of wool and nylon yarn and a double-sided knitted fabric with different wool content in the inner and outer layers based on unidirectional moisture transfer principles. The results showed that the difference in wool content between layers had a significant effect on the cumulative one-way moisture index, while small yarn linear density change had no significant effect on this index, but had a significant effect on the surface diffusion rate. The cumulative one-way moisture conductivity indexes of samples 1/9, 1/8, 1/6, 1/7 and 1/5 were all above 400, with the rating of 5, indicating excellent one-way moisture conductivity, so the one-way moisture conductivity of the fabric with high wool content is realized. The application of this technology will provide better moisture absorption and perspiration performance and wearing comfort for wool sportswear fabrics.
