Abstract Fisheries and climate warming are two stressors known to induce evolutionary changes in fish life histories. While their independent effects have been well documented, their interactive effects are less charted, although likely important for sustainable fisheries management and conservation strategies. We investigated the evolutionary responses of the Northeast Arctic cod stock (Gadus morhua) to warming temperatures and fishing pressure using a mechanistic modeling approach. Our individual-based simulation model incorporates explicit energy and oxygen budgets, and a simplified genetics framework to capture the complex interactions among traits governing energy acquisition/allocation and maturation schedules. Our results provide a theoretical basis for positive consequences for this particular cod stock in a warming climate. Warmer temperatures increased the aerobic scope, which reduced natural mortality. We found that if food availability and temperature are not linked, a warming climate leads to larger population sizes. By selecting for maturation at larger sizes, adaptation to warming climate at least partially counteracts the evolutionary consequences of fishing, namely smaller body sizes and earlier maturation. Our findings emphasize the benefits of adaptive management approaches, considering fish as evolving organisms and integrating ocean warming into fisheries management strategies.

Assessing resilience in pharmacy education during the COVID-19 era

Abstract In higher education, resilience is vital for enabling students and academics to confront challenges and sustain well-being. The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified concerns about how individuals in higher education, including in pharmacy education, adapt to drastic shifts in societal, economic, and educational contexts. This study aimed to explore resilience in pharmacy higher education within the Eastern Mediterranean Region. This cross-sectional study was conducted from October 2020 to January 2021, involving pharmacy students and academics across the 22 EMR countries. Data collection utilised an online questionnaire, that included, along with demographic and environmental items, the CD-RISC-22 scale, a modified version of the Connor Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-25). CD-RISC-22 is a 22 items, a self-administered psychometric scale, tailored to assess resilience among pharmacy students and academics in EMR region. Data were analysed using descriptive and comparative statistical methods. Students exhibited a significantly lower resilience scores (mean ± SD: 58.81 ± 13.41) when compared with academic staff/faculty (66.74 ± 10.29) across all constructs of the CD-RISC-22 scale (p < 0.000), with the exception of the ‘connection/spirituality’ factor (p = 0.1). The availability of mental health support services in educational institutions was found to be limited, with only 13 (10.7%) academic respondents reporting access to a mental health advisory scheme and 88 (17.7%) of students reporting access to mental health and well-being support training. Academics and students felt more supported by their colleagues and peers than by their institutions. This research sheds light on the variations in resilience levels between pharmacy students and academics in the EMR, emphasising the need for targeted interventions to enhance undergraduate students’ resilience.

Abstract The study of the regional ecological sensitivity evolution process can timely understand the regional ecological evolution law and propose ecological protection strategies. In this study, an ecological sensitivity index system is established to quantitatively analyze the interrelationships of ecological factors. The CA-MC model and center of gravity migration are used to investigate the spatial and temporal evolution of ecological sensitivity in the upper Minjiang River basin from 2000 to 2020 and to predict the ecological sensitivity in 2040. Then with the help of Geodetector to clarify the influence intensity of each factor, different types of ecological regions are identified. The results show that (i) the applicability and accuracy of the analytical framework are verified by categorizing the study area into five classes: insensitive, lightly sensitive, moderately sensitive, highly sensitive, and extremely sensitive. (ii) The ecological sensitivity of the study area from 2000 to 2020 is still dominated by moderately sensitive and highly sensitive. In this process, the environmental protection measures become more and more diversified, and the insensitive areas are increasing. (iii) There is a significant difference in the shift of the center of gravity of ecological sensitivity at all levels, with the overall shift of insensitive, lightly sensitive, and highly sensitive areas to the east. The moderately sensitive and extremely sensitive areas have shifted to the southeast as a whole. Among them, the insensitive area shifted the farthest distance from 2010 to 2020, which was 15.16 km. (iv) The CA-MC model deduced that the overall sensitivity level of the Sichuan-Tibet Railway showed a slow decreasing trend from 2000 to 2040. Through the results of ecological sensitivity evaluation and discussion, this study effectively reveals the differences in ecological sensitivity risks faced by the development of typical watershed areas in China and provides a basis for the government to formulate policies suitable for different environmental protection.

Abstract To face the problems of shale drilling, oil-based fluids, mineral salts, and polymers are used, but they have limitations such as high preparation cost, hazardous environmental impact, and limited applicability in high-pressure, high-temperature environments. Therefore, introducing an environmentally friendly drilling fluid capable of inhibiting clay swelling can be beneficial for drilling shale layers and other layers containing swelling clays. Glycerin is ecologically friendly and has high stability under various environmental conditions. In the present research, a thorough set of experimental tests, including a bentonite sedimentation test, free swelling test, bentonite inhibition test, cuttings dispersion test, and visual observation of swelling, have been conducted. In all experiments, bentonite and shale cuttings were utilized as representative clay samples, with their mineralogy precisely characterized using advanced techniques such as zeta potential analysis, X-ray diffraction, and particle size distribution analysis. The representative clay samples were then brought into contact with different compositions of drilling fluids, including glycerin-based fluids and an index showing the inhibition characteristics of the fluids was reported for each test. The results indicate that glycerin-based fluids at concentrations of 100%, 90%, and 80% exhibit a significantly high capability to control clay swelling, outperforming conventional KCl-based fluids in all tests. While the 70% glycerin-based fluid showed superior performance in most tests, its results in bentonite sedimentation and cutting recovery were comparable to those of KCl-based fluids. Additionally, cutting recovery tests revealed that glycerin-based fluids not only outperform KCl-based fluids but also maintain their effectiveness more consistently with increasing temperature, highlighting their potential as a reliable and temperature-stable alternative for inhibiting clay swelling in drilling operations.

Abstract One of the biggest causes of death around the world is cancer. Despite the development of a variety of chemotherapeutic drugs that stop excessive cell division, drug resistance remains a major obstacle to chemotherapy. It is consequently critical to develop and find new and effective anti-cancer agents in order to address the global threat. Owing to coumarins are a promising scaffold for anticancer agents, in this approach, we interested to synthesis new coumarins linked to either 1,3-thiazols or 1,3,4-thiadiazoles and examined their cytotoxic efficacy. Eleven of the newly prepared compounds were selected for the in vitro anticancer investigations against 60 human cancer cell lines at a single dose (10− 5M). Based on the results, we observed that compounds 3a, 3b, 6, 8a, b and 10b were the most active towards different cancer cell lines where the growth inhibition percent (GIP) was up to 96%. Moreover, compound 6 had lethality effect against melanoma MDA-MB-435 and renal cancer A498 with growth percent − 47.47 and − 6.20. Also, the lethal effects were seen with compound 10b where it exerted a value of − 27.79% toward melanoma MDA-MB-435.The highest GIP values 96.03% was recorded for compound 10a against melanoma MDA-MB-435 cancer cell line.
