Trends in heart failure prevalence in post-disaster Fukushima residents 2015–2021
Abstract This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of heart failure (HF) among adults aged ≥ 40 years using health checkup and medical claim data in Fukushima from 2015 to 2021. Joinpoint regression and age-period-cohort analyses were conducted to estimate temporal trends. Age-standardized prevalence and hospital admission rates for HF were 37.0 and 7.4/1000 and 25.9 and 5.3/1000 for men and women, respectively. The prevalence was significantly higher in the coastal area and evacuation zone designated after the 2011 disaster compared to the prefecture overall. In men, the prevalence increased continuously, with an average annual percentage change (AAPC) ranging from 0.72% (evacuation zone) to 1.15% (mountainous area) ( P < 0.05). In total residents, the AAPC was significant only in the mountainous areas (0.78%, P = 0.021). Age-period-cohort analysis showed a net drift of 2.50% (95% CI 1.88–3.13%) in men and 0.76% (95% CI − 0.17–1.70%) in women. Cohort rate ratios increased significantly in men born between 1925 and 1975, while in women, they decreased for those born between 1925 and 1960 but increased for those born between 1960 and 1970. The prevalence of HF varied across post-disaster areas of Fukushima. Given that pathological changes and modifiable risk factors for HF accumulate gradually, continuous monitoring among middle-aged adults is essential to enable timely prevention and targeted intervention.
Frontal Vulnerability versus Temporal Resilience within the Core Language Network: Neuro-compensatory Mechanisms Underline Differential Language Aging Trajectories
Age-related decline underlies cognitive functions such as sensorimotor control, executive functioning, memory, and language production (LP), whereas language comprehension (LC) tends to remain intact or improve across healthy adult lifespan. This preservation likely stems from structural and functional integrity within core language network (cLAN) regions. To investigate this hypothesis, we analyzed the relationships among brain’s resting-state functional connectivity (FC), structural connectivity (SC), and language behavior (LC and LP) using a cross-sectional cohort of healthy adults ( N = 652; M/F = 322/330; aged 18–88) from the Cambridge Centre for Ageing and Neuroscience (CamCAN) dataset. Six cognitive tasks assessing LC and LP were employed, with neuroimaging measures focused on region-specific connections within the cLAN. Using generalized additive mixed models (GAMMs), complex brain-behavior interactions were identified. Behavioral analyses revealed established age-related dichotomy, LC abilities in vocabulary and proverb comprehension improved, and in syntactic and semantic comprehension remained stable, whereas LP tasks, e.g., verbal fluency, picture priming, and tip of tongue, exhibited significant decline across the lifespan. SC exhibited decline in both intra- and interhemispheric frontotemporal and frontal lobe connections, contrasted by preserved or enhanced temporal lobe connectivity, supporting a pattern of frontal vulnerability concomitant with temporal resilience. Age-related FC patterns demonstrated overall preservation, reflecting compensatory mechanisms to sustain functional integrity despite structural degradation. GAMM analyses revealed complex relationships between brain connectivity and language performance across age. Thus, integrating knowledge of brain structure, function, and language abilities, we identified the brain network mechanisms associated with dichotomous language behavior along lifespan.

Heat and solvent resistant electrospun nanofibers for tunable fluid transport in lateral flow applications
Abstract Lateral flow devices (LFDs) rely on porous materials to guide liquid transport, and electrospun fiber mats have emerged as attractive candidates due to their high surface area, tunable porosity, and ease of functionalization. However, conventional electrospun nanofibers often deform or dissolve when exposed to heat or to solvents commonly used in biochemical assays, limiting their applicability. To address this challenge, we developed electrospun poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanofibers that are both heat-stable and solvent-resistant through the incorporation of photoreactive groups and subsequent solid-state crosslinking via the C, H-insertion crosslinking (CHic) reaction. PMMA fibers containing methacryloyloxy benzophenone (MABP) units were rapidly activated with UV light, yielding nanofiber mats that retain their morphology under elevated temperatures and also in solvents typically used in biochemical assays. Beyond mechanical and chemical stability, we demonstrate that the surface energy of these fibers can be precisely tuned through the formation of a crosslinked hydrogel sheath composed of dimethyl acrylamide (DMAA) and MABP comonomers. This sheath can be applied either by dip-coating of mats of pre-formed fibers or by coaxial electrospinning, and becomes covalently integrated with the fiber core upon light activation. The resulting core–sheath structure transforms the originally hydrophobic PMMA mat into a highly hydrophilic, paper-like material capable of supporting controlled capillary flow. These robust and tunable nanofiber mats offer new opportunities for the design of lateral flow devices with improved solvent compatibility, thermal stability, and flow performance.

Reduced categorical congruence of cognitive and affective empathy in persons with psychotic disorders
Abstract Empathy encompasses the ability to recognize the emotional states of others (cognitive empathy), adjust one’s own feelings accordingly (affective empathy), and develop the motivation to provide support (compassionate empathy). Emotional categorical congruence describes the similarity between the emotions we attribute to another person or experience ourselves in response to their situation and that person’s original emotional state. Some authors argue that categorical congruence is an essential feature of empathy, while others emphasize that similarity regarding the hedonic quality of the respective emotional states is sufficient. Several studies have reported empathic deficits in patients with psychotic disorders. Here, the categorical congruence of empathic responses was examined in 21 individuals with psychotic disorders and 21 healthy controls. After reading brief descriptions of emotional situations, participants categorized both the emotional state of the person described in the scenario and their own emotional state, as the other person experiences the situation, using five positive and five negative emotion categories. Additionally, participants rated their motivation and ability to support the other person in the given situation. Patients with psychotic disorders showed reduced categorical agreement between cognitive and affective empathy, while both aspects of compassionate empathy remained unaffected.
