The value of ultrasound semi-quantitative scoring in the clinical evaluation of acute gouty arthritis with normal and elevated serum uric acid

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate and compare the differences in musculoskeletal ultrasound semi-quantitative scores between acute gouty arthritis patients with normal and elevated serum uric acid levels. We prospectively evaluated 25 patients with acute gouty arthritis and normal serum uric acid, alongside 32 patients with elevated serum uric acid. Clinical data and ultrasound features (double-contour sign, tophi, aggregates, bone erosion, synovial hyperplasia, power Doppler signal, and joint effusion) were compared. Ultrasound successfully detected urate crystal deposition in 68.0% (17/25) of affected joints in the normal uric acid group. However, the elevated uric acid group showed significantly higher semi-quantitative scores for crystal deposition features, including double-contour sign, tophi, aggregates, and bone erosion ( P  < 0.05). Additionally, pain scores, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and C-reactive protein levels demonstrated strong positive correlations with the semi-quantitative scores of inflammatory ultrasound features (r s = 0.738–0.861, P  < 0.01). Musculoskeletal ultrasound semi-quantitative scoring can effectively assess the urate crystal deposition burden and reflect acute-phase inflammatory activity, providing valuable imaging characteristics to inform clinical evaluation during the acute phase.

Implementation of a low-flow intervention at a veterinary teaching hospital: an environmental initiative

Abstract Inhalational anaesthetics such as isoflurane and sevoflurane are widely used in veterinary medicine, but are potent greenhouse gases that contribute substantially to climate change. Low-flow anaesthetic techniques are recommended to minimise their environmental impact, yet their adoption in veterinary practice remains uncertain. This study evaluated the environmental benefits of implementing a standardised low-flow anaesthesia protocol at a veterinary teaching hospital as part of a sustainability initiative. Anaesthetic records from 120 procedures before and 120 after the intervention were analysed to compare FGF rates and volatile agent use during the maintenance phase. The intervention included staff education, email correspondence, visual aids, and a standardised low-flow protocol. Post-intervention, mean FGF decreased by 52% (from 1.27 to 0.61 L/min), corresponding to a proportional 52% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (from 4.24 to 2.03 kg CO 2 e/h). This equated to a decrease in average car mileage emissions from 31.65 to 15.17 km driven per hour of anaesthesia. Survey responses from anaesthesia staff ( n  = 21) indicated strong support for the protocol. Targeted education and standardised protocols can meaningfully reduce inhalant use and emissions in veterinary anaesthesia. Broader adoption of similar initiatives could yield considerable environmental benefits across the veterinary profession.

Abstract Recognising the subtle signs of positive emotions is essential for trust, cooperation, and social connections. However, everyday barriers such as face masks can hinder this ability. We tested whether a brief positive mood induction via comedy viewing could enhance the recognition of subtle smiles and whether this depended on mask-wearing and individual traits. Fifty-three adults (22 males, 31 females) completed a within-subject experiment, watching either a comedy performance or a neutral weather broadcast, and then judged the valence of morphed facial expressions (10–30% intensity) with or without a mask. Comedy viewing significantly increased positive mood and reduced negative mood. Recognition accuracy for subtle positive expressions improved after comedy for unmasked faces but not for masked faces. Greater perspective-taking and lower depressive mood were associated with greater improvement in exploratory analyses. These results suggest that a short, enjoyable activity, such as watching comedy, may enhance sensitivity to others’ positive emotions, but only when key facial cues are visible.

Abstract Multiple stressors threaten freshwater ecosystems, including microplastic pollution and invasive species. The invasive Himalayan balsam, Impatiens glandulifera , releases allelochemicals, such as 2-methoxy-1,4-naphthoquinone (2-MNQ), that can enter aquatic systems via runoff. While microplastics affect aquatic organisms and can alter the fate of chemical stressors, the effects of co-exposure with plant-derived allelochemicals remain largely unexplored. Using Daphnia magna , we investigated the single and combined effects of well-characterized microplastic fragments (PA 66 and PS; 500 and 1000 particles/mL) and 2-MNQ (0.75 mg/L) under chronic exposure, with kaolinite as a natural particle control. Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy indicated that dissolved 2-MNQ concentrations declined over time in particle-free conditions, whereas the presence of particles influenced the detectable dissolved fraction. Biological responses differed across life stages. At primiparity, particle exposure reduced body length, whereas 2-MNQ and co-exposure showed no significant effects. In contrast, after 21 days, effects shifted towards 2-MNQ-containing treatments, which reduced body length and affected reproductive output, particularly during later broods. These findings demonstrate that the effects of microplastics and 2-MNQ are not static but shift over time, with particle-driven effects dominating early responses and combined effects becoming more relevant during prolonged exposure, potentially affecting long-term population dynamics.

Hydrogeological evaluation and sorption process of contaminants onto clay and sand as multi-barrier of a radioactive disposal site

Abstract This study investigates the hydrogeological and sorption characteristics of clay-sand mixtures as barrier layers in nuclear waste disposal facilities. The primary objective is to evaluate geotechnical properties and the immobilization behavior of strontium (Sr²⁺) and cobalt (Co²⁺) on clay and sand layers under simulated contaminant release scenarios from disposal packages. Saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) values for brown clay and brown sand were 3.78 × 10⁻⁸ and 1.02 × 10⁻ 3 cm/s, respectively demonstrating strong resistance to water flow and contaminant migration. Simulated acid water flow significantly increased Ks in brown clay but not in white clay, attributed to kaolinite’s chemical inertness (aluminum silicate-rich) in the latter versus illite, interlayer cations, calcite, and weathering in the former. Batch adsorption experiments and kinetics at pH 6 revealed superior Sr²⁺ and Co²⁺ uptake in brown clay compared to white clay and brown sand. Experimental and modeled adsorption capacities aligned best with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, outperforming the pseudo-first-order model across all samples.
