Abstract The study reported in this research article focuses on the machining behavior and phase transformation of Ti₅₀Ni₄₉Co₁ shape memory alloy during wire-electrical-discharge-machining (WEDM). Experiments were performed to determine the combined effect of the pulse-on time (Ton) and servo voltage (SV) under high-energy discharge conditions, using a Taguchi L 25 orthogonal array. The results show that the pulse-on time significantly increases discharge energy, which reached a peak MRR of 8.43 mm 3 /min with Ton = 125 µs and SV = 20 V (Run order 21). However, it also increased the surface roughness (Ra) from 2.85 μm to 5.01 μm, producing deeper craters and hardened recast layers as well as re-solidified debris because of rapid melting and solidification. Major morphological changes were observed at high discharge energy, as confirmed by 3D surface profilometry. The servo voltage influenced the stability of the spark: higher voltages reduced discharge intensity, resulting in lower material removal rate but improved surface finish. XRD analysis revealed the formation of secondary phases, containing NiTi 2 , TiO 2 , and CuZn, was produced during machining, resulting from oxidation and transfer of the electrode material. DSC examination showed an increase in transformation peaks, a decrease in transformation enthalpy, and an insignificant change in transformation temperatures, indicating that the martensitic transformation in the recast layer was partially suppressed by compositional alterations and oxide formation. Nevertheless, no loss of shape-memory property was observed in the bulk material, although slight variations in transformation behavior were observed. Overall, the results support the importance of properly optimizing pulse-on time and servo voltage to achieve a balance among good machining performance, consistent surface quality, and good functional performance, particularly in precision biomedical, aerospace, and smart actuator applications.

Abstract Acropora cervicornis and Acropora palmata have long provided structural complexity to Caribbean reefs, yet they have declined by over 90% in recent decades. Identifying places where wild populations of at-risk corals can survive remains essential for conservation. Coral Gardens, Belize, has historically been a refugium for endangered Acropora spp ., but mass mortality transpired in 2023. This study aimed to determine whether coral loss at a small long-term field monitoring site was representative of regional trends. We developed a supervised Random Tree classification model to identify the spectral signature of Acropora spp . in satellite images and predict live coral cover across 25 km² from 2011 to 2023 to compare with field data from 2012 to 2025. Model data predicted a drop in live Acropora spp . of over 90% from 2011 to 2023 coincident with total loss at the field site. Field validation of the model became a search for survivors in June 2025. Live or recently dead Acropora spp . were found at 28 of 42 predicted sites, and live colonies were found at 16 previously undocumented locations. This methodology provides a tool for monitoring shallow-water Acropora spp . and locating survivors. Our findings underscore the vulnerability of even persistent coral refugia.

Arctic ecosystems shaped mammalian dispersal and diversification before the Cretaceous–Paleogene mass extinction

High-latitude terrestrial ecosystems are commonly viewed as marginal environments to deep-time evolutionary innovation, yet their role in shaping biotic dispersal, diversification, and survivorship remains poorly understood. The Upper Cretaceous Prince Creek Formation of northern Alaska (paleolatitude ~80–85°N) yields the most northerly known Mesozoic mammals and provides a rare opportunity to examine the ecological and biogeographic roles of polar terrestrial ecosystems. Here, we describe three multituberculate species, Camurodon borealis , Qayaqgruk peregrinus , and Kaniqsiqcosmodon polaris , and integrate comparative morphology with phylogenetic and biogeographic analyses to evaluate patterns and timing of dispersal and diversification across a high-latitude Asian–American terrestrial corridor. Qayaqgruk peregrinus is recovered within the Mongolian Djadochtatherioidea, representing the earliest direct evidence for multituberculate dispersal from Asia into North America. Kaniqsiqcosmodon polaris constitutes the oldest known member of the Microcosmodontidae, suggesting a high-latitude origin for a derived North American lineage that later diversified during the Paleocene following the Cretaceous–Paleogene mass extinction. Camurodon borealis represents the northernmost occurrence of the Cimolomyidae. Pronounced variation in dental morphology among the Prince Creek multituberculates indicates ecological differentiation and niche partitioning within an extreme, highly seasonal polar environment. Our findings indicate that Late Cretaceous Arctic ecosystems supported both sustained intercontinental exchanges as early as 91.82 Ma and endemism. Our results challenge interpretations of polar regions as evolutionary peripheries and instead identify them as important contributors to mammalian evolutionary dynamics prior to the Cretaceous–Paleogene mass extinction.
