Effects of different tennis racket string tension on forehand stroke effect and racket dynamic impact

This study investigates the effect of varying tennis racket string tension on stroke effect and the dynamic response of the racket. Using the YSV dynamic acceleration signal acquisition system and a portable radar speed gun collect data on racket acceleration, stress-strain signals, and ball speed from 15 male athletes. Stroke accuracy and depth were assessed according to the International Tennis Number. The recorded stroke speeds were 108.87±13.57 km/h, 111.83±16.34 km/h, and 107.76±12.53 km/h for the low, medium, and high tension, respectively. A significantly higher ball speed was observed at 54lbs compared to both 48lbs and 60lbs (P <0.05). Control scores were 4.90±0.61,5.46±0.84, and 4.64±0.69 for the respective tensions. The control at 54lbs was significantly higher than at 60lbs (P<0.05). Deformation measurements were 18.53±4.90με, 16.31±4.42με, and 20.90±3.53με, with significantly lower deformation at 54lbs compared to 60lbs (P<0.05). The impact forces recorded were 381.81±48.51m/s2, 380.53±50.47m/s2, and 380.04±53.70m/s2, with no significant effect of string tension on impact force. Racket vibration frequencies were 44.14±0.48Hz, 44.08±0.35Hz, and 44.14±0.25Hz, with no significant difference among three string tensions. Rackets with three string tensions showed significantly higher vibration frequencies during the collision phase compared to before or after (P<0.01). In conclusion, string tension affect the stroke effect, racket strung at medium tension can optimize stroke effect while got milder dynamic impact, suggesting that racket strung at medium tension is recommended for tennis enthusiasts to enhance stroke performance and to decrease the risk of resonance damage in the forearm soft tissues.

A framework for assessing reliability of observer annotations of aerial wildlife imagery, with insights for deep learning applications

There is growing interest in using deep learning models to automate wildlife detection in aerial imaging surveys to increase efficiency, but human-generated annotations remain necessary for model training. However, even skilled observers may diverge in interpreting aerial imagery of complex environments, which may result in downstream instability of models. In this study, we present a framework for assessing annotation reliability by calculating agreement metrics for individual observers against an aggregated set of annotations generated by clustering multiple observers’ observations and selecting the mode classification. We also examined how image attributes like spatial resolution and texture influence observer agreement. To demonstrate the framework, we analyzed expert and volunteer annotations of twelve drone images of migratory waterfowl in New Mexico. Neither group reliably identified duck species: experts showed low agreement (43–56%) for several common species, and volunteers opted out of the task. When simplified into broad morphological categories, there was high agreement for cranes (99% among experts, 95% among volunteers) and ducks (93% among experts, 92% among volunteers), though agreement among volunteers was notably lower for classifying geese (75%) than among experts (94%). The aggregated annotation sets from the two groups were similar: the volunteer count of birds across all images was 91% of the expert count, with no statistically significant difference per image (t = 1.27, df = 338, p = 0.20). Bird locations matched 81% between groups and classifications matched 99.4%. Tiling images to reduce search area and maintaining a constant scale to keep size differences between classes consistent may increase observer agreement. Although our sample was limited, these findings indicate potential taxonomic limitations to aerial wildlife surveys and show that, in aggregate, volunteers can produce data comparable to experts’. This framework may assist other wildlife practitioners in evaluating the reliability of their input data for deep learning models.

Comparison of greenhouse gas emissions associated with the construction of timber, concrete, and steel check dams in Akita, Japan: An input-output analysis

To mitigate global warming, replacing concrete and steel with timber as the primary construction material for construction projects, such as check dams, is being promoted in Japan and other countries. Timber check dams have more limited installation sites than concrete or steel dams because of installation conditions such as locations less susceptible to debris flows and locations where there is constant running water. However, even when the installation conditions are met, engineers and contractors are reluctant to select timber as a construction material because of its high construction cost. In this study, an input-output table was used to compare the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with the construction of a timber check dam at the design stage with those associated with the construction of concrete and steel check dams to quantitatively evaluate the added value of timber utilization (in addition to its construction cost). The results revealed that replacing concrete and steel check dams with timber check dams could reduce GHG emissions by 61% and 34%, respectively. This study demonstrated the possibility of evaluating the GHG emissions associated with a construction project at the design stage. Moreover, it highlights the importance of considering the GHG emissions associated with construction materials when selecting the most appropriate materials for public works projects.

A novel broad-spectrum bacteriophage cocktail against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus: Isolation, characterization, and therapeutic potential in a mastitis mouse model

Bovine mastitis is a considerable challenge within the dairy industry, causing significant financial losses and threatening public health. The increased occurrence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has provoked difficulties in managing bovine mastitis. Bacteriophage therapy presents a novel treatment strategy to combat MRSA infections, emerging as a possible substitute for antibiotics. This study evaluated the therapeutic potency of a novel bacteriophage cocktail against MRSA mastitis. Two new bacteriophages (vB_SauR_SW21 and vB_SauR_SW25) with potent lytic activity against MRSA were isolated and characterized. The one-step growth curve displayed a rapid latent period (20–35 min) and substantial burst size (418 and 316 PFU/ cell). In silico analyses have confirmed the absence of antimicrobial resistance or virulence factor-encoding genes within their genomes. According to the results, combining these phages augmented their host range and virulence. The phage cocktail significantly reduced bacterial burden in a BALB/c mastitis model, demonstrating efficacy comparable to antibiotic treatment. Moreover, its administration led to decreased concentrations of IL-1β and TNF-α compared to the negative control group. The bacteriophage cocktail (SW21-SW25) exhibits a promising profile for therapeutic applications and may represent a novel substitute to antibiotics for managing MRSA bovine mastitis.

Phytochemical analysis and biological activities of solvent extracts and silver nanoparticles obtained from Woodwardia unigemmata (Makino) Nakai

Multidrug resistant bacteria are causing health problems and economic burden worldwide; alternative treatment options such as natural products and nanoparticles have attained great attention recently. Therefore, we aimed to determine the phytochemicals, antibacterial potential, and anticancer activity of W. unigemmata. Extracts in different organic and inorganic solvents were prepared, silver nanoparticles were prepared using the green synthesis method. Phytochemicals and antioxidant activity was determined spectrophotometry, anticancer potential was determined against gastric cancer and normal gastric epithelial cells using CCK8 and colony formation assays W. unigemmata was found to have a significant enrichment of various phytochemicals including flavonoids, terpenoids, alkaloids, carotenoids, tannins, saponins, quinines, carbohydrates, phenols, coumarins and phlobatanins. Among them phenolics (5289.89 ± 112.67) had high enrichment followed by reducing sugar (851.53 ± 120.15), flavonoids (408.28 ± 20.26) and ascorbic acid (347.64 ± 16.32), respectively. The extracts prepared in organic solvents showed strong antibacterial activity against P. aeruginosa (chloroform, 13.66±0.88, ethyl acetate, 8.66±4.33, methyl alcohol, 13.33±1.66, N-hexane, 12.33±0.88) and S. aureus (chloroform, 15±0.57, ethyl acetate, 16.33±0.33, methyl alcohol, 17.66±0.33 and N-hexane, 16.33±0.33). Aqueously prepared AgNPs showed remarkable activity against P. aeruginosa follwed by E. coli, 17.66 ± 1.85, S. aureus, 16.00 ± 1.73, K. pneumoniae, 14.33 ± 1.20, respectively. The ethanolic extracts (500 μg, 1000 μg, 2000 μg) of the W. unigemmata were found to have cytotoxicity against both gastric cancer (AGS and SGC7901) and normal cell lines (GES-1); a significant cellular proliferation arrest was observed. These results suggest that W. Unigemmata contains numerous bioactive phytochemicals and can be useful as a drug against MDR bacterial strains. These biomolecules covering AgNPs may enhance their biological activities, which can be employed in the treatment of various microbial infections.

Temporal changes in hospital readmissions for postpartum hypertension in the US, 2010 to 2019; a serial cross-sectional analysis

Background Hypertension is the most common primary diagnosis associated with postpartum readmissions within 42 days of delivery hospitalization. In the United States, nearly half of the cases of eclampsia, a severe form of preeclampsia, develop during the postpartum period, and the postpartum onset of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, like antepartum hypertension poses long-term health risks to pregnant individuals, including an increased likelihood of developing overall cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease, heart failure, and chronic hypertension. In this paper, we estimate the trends in the incidence of readmissions for postpartum hypertension within 42 days of delivery discharge in the US, disaggregated by median household income. Methods and findings Using National Readmissions Database, we calculated the readmission rates for postpartum hypertension, both overall and stratified by ZIP Code median household income for each year between 2010 and 2019. We also calculated the percentage change and average annual growth rate (AAGR) in the rate of readmissions for postpartum hypertension between 2010 and 2019 for each income group. We then used a logistic regression model to compare the temporal changes in readmission for postpartum hypertension between the lowest and the highest income quartiles. The estimated incidence of postpartum hypertension readmissions doubled for all the income groups between 2010 and 2019 (0.36% vs. 0.8%). While the incidence of postpartum hypertension cases was higher among the lowest-income quartile, the increase in postpartum hypertension readmissions between 2010 and 2019 was greater in the highest-income quartile. Moreover, the incidence of postpartum hypertension readmissions rose faster in pregnant patients without a history of hypertension compared to those with a history of hypertension (AAGR 8.3% vs. 5.1%). Conclusion The increasing postpartum hypertension readmission burden suggests rising future health risks among mothers and a growing cost burden to the U.S. healthcare system. The higher rate of increase in postpartum hypertension readmissions among people without a history of hypertension calls for blood pressure checking in the postpartum period for all patients regardless of risk status.

Problematic social media use in 3D? Relationships between traditional social media use, social virtual reality (VR) use, and mental health

This research expanded on prior work exploring the relationship between social media use, social support, and mental health by including the usage of social virtual reality (VR). In Study 1 (undergraduate students; n = 448) we examined divergent relationships between problematic social media use (e.g., Facebook, TikTok), total use, and users’ mental health indicators (e.g., depression, anxiety, social isolation). To determine whether problematic social media use patterns extended to immersive 3-D environments, we sampled active social VR users (e.g., Rec Room) in Study 2 (n = 464). Problematic social VR use was related to decreased real-life social support (β = -.62, 95%CI [-.80, -.44]), but not to VR social support (β = -.06, 95%CI [-.25, .14]). Conversely, the amount of social VR use was only related to increased social VR (β = .06, 95%CI [.04, .15]) but not to real-life social support (β = -.02, 95%CI [-.05, .04]). Study 2 also revealed a finding that may be unique to the 3-D immersive environment: the amount of social VR use facilitated better mental health for VR users, but only through stronger perceived social support on social VR but not in real life. This result highlights the potential of immersive media to promote mental well-being by facilitating engaging and meaningful social interactions.

Changes in enzymatic activity and oxidative stress in honeybees kept in the apiary and laboratory conditions during the course of nosemosis

The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in the level of oxidative stress and lysozyme-like and phenoloxidase (PO) activity under the influence of nosemosis. Honeybees were kept in natural (apiary) and artificial (laboratory) conditions. In this study, it was shown for the first time that honeybees kept in apiaries have higher levels and activity of the studied parameters than honeybees kept in the laboratory. The greatest difference was noted in the case of PO activity in 28-day-old infected honeybees in May, when the activity was 32.3 times higher in honeybees kept in the apiary than in the laboratory, suggesting that environmental conditions have a significant influence on the immune response of honeybees. Simultaneously, the apiary conditions resulted in higher level of oxidative stress, indicating lower effectiveness of antioxidative mechanisms. Additional nosemosis infection increased the level of oxidative stress as well as lysozyme and PO activities. In July, in 28-day-old infected honeybees kept in laboratory, the highest increase in PO activity (by 10.79 fold) was detected compared to healthy honeybees. This may indicate that infection causes a decrease in the effectiveness of primarily antioxidant mechanisms, whereas immune mechanisms are still activated during infection. Another interesting factor is the age of the honeybees. It was found that in the summer months (June, July) the lysozyme-like and PO activities increased with age, while in the case of oxidative stress the opposite trend was observed, suggesting better effectiveness of both immune and antioxidant mechanisms. Another important element is seasonality, which significantly affected only the lysozyme-like activity. It was found that in July in all the groups studied this activity was higher than in the other months. The results allow us to better understand the mechanisms of honeybee immunity, which are constantly being studied due to the complex social structure created by these insects. Our research emphasizes that honeybee immunity is dynamic and depends on a number of factors, such as environment, age, season or the presence of pathogens.
