Ultrasonic emulsification of Cananga odorata nanoemulsion formulation for enhancement of herbicidal potential

Abstract A nanoemulsion was fabricated from Cananga odorata essential oil (EO) and stabilized by incorporation of Tween 80 using ultrasonication. The major constituents of the EO were benzyl benzoate, linalool, and phenylmethyl ester. Differing sonication amplitude (20–60%) and time (2–10 min) were assessed for effects on nanoemulsion droplet size and polydispersity index (PI). The smallest droplet size of 43.98 nm (PI 0.222) was obtained using 40% amplitude for 8 min; this nanoemulsion was evaluated for its droplet characteristics and pre-emergence herbicidal activities on Amaranthus tricolor. FT-IR confirmed ultrasonic emulsification to not affect the EO components. Regarding stability, storage at 4 °C was determined appropriate, with droplet size changing slightly after five weeks. Assays of herbicidal potential showed the coarse emulsion and nanoemulsion to both reduce A. tricolor germination and growth, with the nanoemulsion being more effective at a given concentration and the difference in effectivity correlating to droplet size. Remarkably, treatment with 250 ppm nanoemulsion and coarse emulsion respectively resulted in 100% and 63.75% germination inhibition. Both emulsions decreased seed imbibition and alpha-amylase activity. The highest relative electrolyte leakage was achieved in seed treated with the nanoemulsion. Therefore, this ultrasonic-based nanoemulsion may have utility as bioherbicide alternative.

Trace elements in fish species from the Punjnad headworks: Bioaccumulation and human health risk assessment

Aquatic toxicology, as a result of industrial and agrieqcultural effluences, has become a global concern impacting not only the well-being of aquatic organisms but human health as well. The current study evaluated the impact of four toxic trace elements (TTEs) Cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and nickel (Ni) in three organs (liver, gills, and muscles) of five fish species viz, Rita rita, Sperata sarwari, Wallago attu, Mastacembelus armatus, and Cirrhinus mrigala collected from right and left banks of Punjnad headworks during winter, spring, and summer. We investigated the accumulation (mg/kg) of these TTEs in fish in addition to the human health risk assessment. The obtained results showed that W. attu accumulated significantly more TTEs (p < 0.00) as compared to other fish. Among seasons, summer had significantly more (p < 0.00) accumulation of TTEs than other seasons. Lead (Pb) accumulation was highest across TTEs in fish liver as compared to gills and muscles. The right bank showed higher accumulation (p < 0.00) of all TTEs in all fish species compared to the left bank. The human health risk assessment showed that Cd and Pb had higher exposure levels than Cu and Ni. Furthermore, the THQ was in the order of Cd > Pb > Ni > Cu. All fish species had THQ 1 for Cd and Pb and TTHQ > 1 for all fish. MPI index showed moderate to high levels of TTE contamination in all fish species. The study concluded that the right bank has higher metal accumulation than the left bank. However, fish consumption from both study sites was unsafe for human consumption. Further studies are required to evaluate the contamination of other trace elements in the aquatic ecosystem of the current site. This study will be useful for policymakers and the water department to take necessary counteractions to reduce the impact of TTEs at the study site.

A novel feature extraction method based on dynamic handwriting for Parkinson’s disease detection

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a common disease of the elderly. Given the easy accessibility of handwriting samples, many researchers have proposed handwriting-based detection methods for Parkinson’s disease. Extracting more discriminative features from handwriting is an important step. Although many features have been proposed in previous researches, the insight analysis of the combination of handwriting’s kinematic, pressure, and angle dynamic features is lacking. Moreover, most existing feature is incompletely represented, with feature information lost. Therefore, to solve the above problems, a new feature extraction approach for PD detection is proposed using handwriting. First, built on the kinematic, pressure, and angle dynamic features, we propose a moment feature by composed these three types of features, an overall representation of these three types of features information. Then, we proposed a feature extraction method to extract time-frequency-based statistical (TF-ST) features from dynamic handwriting features in terms of their temporal and frequency characteristics. Finally, we proposed an escape Coati Optimization Algorithm (eCOA) for global optimization to enhance classification performance. Self-constructed and public datasets are used to verify the proposed method’s effectiveness respectively. The experimental results showed an accuracy of 97.95% and 98.67%, a sensitivity of 98.15% (average) and 97.78%, a specificity of 99.17% (average) and 100%, and an AUC of 98.66% (average) and 98.89%. The impact of climate change on Korea’s agricultural sector under the national self-sufficiency policy

Evolving environmental conditions due to climate change have brought about changes in agriculture, which is required for human life as both a source of food and income. International trade can act as a buffer against potential negative impacts of climate change on crop yields, but recent years have seen breakdowns in global trade, including export bans to improve domestic food security. For countries that rely heavily on imported food, governments may institute policies to protect their agricultural industry from changes in climate-induced crop yield changes and other countries’ potential trade restrictions. This study assesses the individual and combined effects of climate impacts and food self-sufficiency policies in Korea, which is highly dependent on imports. We use the Global Change Analysis Model (GCAM), a global integrated assessment model, to explore (1) the direct impact of climate change on Korea’s agricultural yields, (2) the full impacts of global climate change on agricultural production, including trade-induced changes due to yield changes in other regions, (3) the impacts of food self-sufficiency policy, and (4) the interactive impact of climate change and self-sufficiency policies. We find that, in Korea, the direct impact of climate change on agricultural yields would be overshadowed by the impact of global climate change due to changing trade patterns. Second, global climate change leads to a rise (rice and wheat) or a decline (soybeans) in Korean producer revenues, while simultaneously raising consumer expenditures on both staples and non-staples. Third, implementing self-sufficiency policies for wheat and soybeans in Korea boosts the nation’s producer revenues, in conjunction with the effects of climate change, at the cost of additional increases in consumer expenditures for both staples and non-staples.

Time series segmentation for recognition of epileptiform patterns recorded via microelectrode arrays in vitro

Epilepsy is a prevalent neurological disorder that affects approximately 1% of the global population. Approximately 30-40% of patients respond poorly to antiepileptic medications, leading to a significant negative impact on their quality of life. Closed-loop deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a promising treatment for individuals who do not respond to medical therapy. To achieve effective seizure control, algorithms play an important role in identifying relevant electrographic biomarkers from local field potentials (LFPs) to determine the optimal stimulation timing. In this regard, the detection and classification of events from ongoing brain activity, while achieving low power consumption through computationally inexpensive implementations, represents a major challenge in the field. To address this challenge, we here present two algorithms, the ZdensityRODE and the AMPDE, for identifying relevant events from LFPs by utilizing time series segmentation (TSS), which involves extracting different levels of information from the LFP and relevant events from it. The algorithms were validated validated against epileptiform activity induced by 4-aminopyridine in mouse hippocampus-cortex (CTX) slices and recorded via microelectrode array, as a case study. The ZdensityRODE algorithm showcased a precision and recall of 93% for ictal event detection and 42% precision for interictal event detection, while the AMPDE algorithm attained a precision of 96% and recall of 90% for ictal event detection and 54% precision for interictal event detection. While initially trained specifically for detecting ictal activity, these algorithms can be fine-tuned for improved interictal detection, aiming at seizure prediction. Our results suggest that these algorithms can effectively capture epileptiform activity, supporting seizure detection and, possibly, seizure prediction and control. This opens the opportunity to design new algorithms based on this approach for closed-loop stimulation devices using more elaborate decisions and more accurate clinical guidelines.

The measurement reliability and equivalence of print versus online versions of the Youth Activity Profile

Purpose The Youth Activity Profile (YAP) is a 7-day self-report designed to quantify physical activity and sedentary behaviors among youth. This study evaluated the reliability of the online version of the YAP and equivalence with the paper-based version. Method A total of 2,490 participants from 17 schools in Iowa and Texas completed the YAP. Each classroom was randomly assigned to complete either the print or online version twice. A variance components model was used to assess the test-retest reliability and equivalence testing was also applied. Results Both paper and online versions had similar reliability for the PA estimates in school (ICCprint = 0.69–0.91; ICConline = 0.54–0.84), at home (ICCprint = 0.72–0.83; ICConline = 0.64–0.94), PA at weekend (ICCprint = 0.33–0.72; ICConline = 0.39–0.70), and SB (ICCprint = 0.69–0.90; ICConline = 0.66–0.80). The two versions were statistically equivalent for most YAP items except for recess. Conclusion The online YAP appears to be a reliable assessment of physical activity and sedentary behavior in youth populations.

Undergraduates’ lifestyle and Suboptimal Health Status (SHS): A cross-sectional study in the Ha’il region of Saudi Arabia

Background University students in Saudi Arabia are embracing some of the negative traits of the fast-paced modern lifestyle, typified by unhealthy eating, low physical activity, and poor sleep habits that may increase their risk for poor health. Health and holistic well-being at the population level are among the priorities of the 2030 vision of a vibrant society in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The current study thus aims at determining the prevalence and predictive factors of Suboptimal Health Status (SHS) among university students. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 9,026 undergraduate students between 31st May and 15th June 2023. The data was collected through an online questionnaire using the Arabic translation of the SHS (ASHSQ-25) and the Simple Lifestyle Indicator Questionnaire (SLIQ). The chi-square test, Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA), hierarchical multiple regression, and Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) were performed to analyze the data using IBM SPSS software (version 25.0) at a significance level of p<0.05. Results The findings showed that 33.7% (3038) of the students were classified as having SHS. The prevalence of SHS was statistically higher among younger and those studying social science discipline, overweight, had poor diets, engaged in low physical activity, and slept <6 hours (p<0.001). Canonical loadings of these factors were significant in predicting the five SHS dimensions range (0.52–0.97). Furthermore, the extracted significant variables from the multiple regression analysis indicated the final model (Model 3) was statistically significant, R2 = 0.646, F (6,9019), p <0.0001, suggesting that 64.6% of the variance in the SHS can be explained by the predictor variables in the model. These variables included age, college, academic level, diet, BMI, and sleeping duration. Conclusion Findings show that modifiable predictors such as poor sleep quality, higher BMI scores, and poor dietary habits increase SHS risk among university students in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, the findings of this study emphasize the necessity of early interventions that promote healthy lifestyles.

Performance of five dynamic models in predicting tuberculosis incidence in three prisons in Thailand

This study examined the ability of the following five dynamic models for predicting pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) incidence in a prison setting: the Wells–Riley equation, two Rudnick & Milton-proposed models based on air changes per hour and liters per second per person, the Issarow et al. model, and the applied susceptible-exposed-infected-recovered (SEIR) tuberculosis (TB) transmission model. This 1-year prospective cohort study employed 985 cells from three Thai prisons (one prison with 652 cells as the in-sample, and two prisons with 333 cells as the out-of-sample). The baseline risk of TB transmission for each cell was assessed using the five dynamic models, and the future PTB incidence was calculated as the number of new PTB cases per cell and the number of new PTB cases per 1,000 person-years (incidence rate). The performance of the dynamic models was assessed by a four-step standard assessment procedure (including model specification tests, in-sample model fitting, internal validation, and external validation) based on the Negative Binomial Regression model. A 1% increase in baseline TB transmission probability was associated with a 3%–7% increase in future PTB incidence rate, depending on the dynamic model. The Wells–Riley model exhibited the best performance in terms of both internal and external validity. Poor goodness-of-fit was observed in all dynamic models (chi-squared goodness-of-fit tests of 70.75–305.1, 8 degrees of freedom, p < .001). In conclusion, the Wells–Riley model was the most appropriate dynamic model, especially for large-scale investigations, due to its fewer parameter requirements. Further research is needed to confirm our findings and gather more data to improve these dynamic models.

A missing link: The interdependence between sugar-sweetened beverage and cigarette consumption from China

Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and cigarettes are addictive substances and addictive substances are often related in consumption with each other. However, the potential interdependence between SSB and cigarette consumption has not been explored in the literature. As SSB and cigarette consumption have posed a great threat to individual health, the knowledge of such interdependence is critical for policymakers to design and coordinate government interventions. We thus employed Heckman sample selection model and simultaneous equation model to identify and validate the interdependence between SSB and cigarette consumption across subgroups exhibiting different smoking behaviors with individual-level data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) during the period from 2004 to 2011. We find that SSBs and cigarettes are complements in that individuals who ever smoked are more likely to consume SSBs frequently with higher level of SSB intake eventually and SSB intake of current smokers increases along with the amount of cigarettes smoked. SSBs and cigarettes are also substitutes in that former smokers are more likely to consume SSBs compared with current smokers. The complementary relation observed among current smokers implies that government interventions targeting one of the two goods may yield a double dividend effect on health whereas the substitutable relation displayed by former smokers suggests that the health effect of interventions designed to reduce the consumption of one good may be tempered by an elevated demand for the other.

Prevalence of HIV infection and uptake of HIV/AIDs services among fishermen on the shores of Lake Victoria in Kagera region, Northwestern Tanzania

Introduction The Tanzania HIV Impact Survey (THIS) 2022–2023 showed that HIV prevalence among the general population stabilises but varies geographically across the country. Despite this, disproportionate burdens of HIV continue among specific subpopulations, such as fishermen. Fishermen are particularly vulnerable to HIV infection and have a low uptake of HIV prevention and treatment services. This study aimed to understand the prevalence of HIV infection, uptake of HIV/AIDs services, and associated risk factors of HIV Infection among fishermen residing along the shores of Lake Victoria in the Kagera region, Tanzania, in 2024. Methods A cross-sectional study among fishermen was employed from February to April 2024, using convenient sampling of 10 beach management units (BMUs) to obtain a robust sample of fishermen aged ≥15 years in Kagera. Participants were randomly selected across BMUs. Information was collected using an interviewer-administered questionnaire, and HIV testing was offered on-site according to national testing guidelines. Multivariable logistic regression was used to determine factors associated with HIV infection, adjusted for potential confounders. Results A total of 774 fishermen with a median age of 31 years (interquartile range: 25–38 years) were recruited. The study found an HIV prevalence of 11.3% (95% CI: 9.2–13.8). HIV prevalence varied across selected districts: 12.7% in Muleba District, 10.1% in Bukoba Rural District, and 8.6% in Bukoba Urban District. The HIV prevalence was highest among fishermen aged 20–24 years (14.7% (95% CI: 9.7–21.5). The majority, 60.9% (95% CI: 57.4–64.2), had tested for HIV in the past 12 months. Of those living with HIV, 77.6% (95% CI: 67.3–85.9) self-reported using anti-retroviral therapy. In adjusted analysis, using alcohol before sex (aOR = 2.32, 95 CI: 1.42–3.80), not testing for HIV in the last 12 months (aOR = 4.69, 95% CI: 2.79–7.88), and not using condoms (aOR = 1.94, 95% CI: 1.13–3.27) were significantly associated with HIV infection among fishermen. Conclusion HIV prevalence among fishermen was nearly twice as high as in the general population in Kagera. HIV programming should be strengthened to reduce new HIV infections. Hotspot mapping to expand HIV prevention and treatment services is pivotal for controlling the HIV epidemic.

The relationship between vitamin A and myopia: A population-based study

Purpose We sought to evaluate the relationship between blood vitamin A levels and myopia in adults aged ≥20 years in Korea. Methods We collected data of 15,899 participants aged ≥20 years from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Participants underwent refraction tests to identify myopia and high myopia, and their blood pressure and obesity levels were measured. Blood tests were conducted to assess vitamin A, fasting blood glucose, triglyceride, and total cholesterol levels. Blood vitamin A levels were classified into quartiles. Results After adjusting for confounding variables like age, sex, income, education, hypertension, diabetes, and obesity, the odds ratio (OR) of blood vitamin A in the second quartile for myopia was 0.66, while the OR in the fourth quartile was 0.74 (P for trend < 0.001). Among women, the ORs for myopia in the second and third quartiles of blood vitamin A levels were 0.48 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.35–0.66) and 0.67 (95% CI, 0.49–0.90), respectively (P for trend < 0.001). In men, the ORs for high myopia in the second, third, and fourth quartiles of blood vitamin A levels were 0.05 (95% CI, 0.004–0.58), 0.15 (95% CI, 0.024–0.91), and 0.05 (95% CI, 0.008–0.364), respectively (P for trend < 0.001). Conclusion An inverse relationship was observed between higher blood vitamin A levels and the prevalence of myopia. Notably, higher blood vitamin A levels were associated with a lower prevalence of high myopia in men and a lower prevalence of myopia in women.

Is there a risk of developmental problems in infants born to mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus and/or pre-eclampsia?

Objective The aims of this study were (i) to describe the early spontaneous movements in 3-to 5-month-old infants in groups of infants born to mothers with GDM and/or PE, (ii) to compare them, and (iii) to analyze the differences between infants with these risk factors and typically developing infants born to mothers without GDM and/or PE and other risk factors. Methods This cohort study included 255 infants in 4 groups: (i) 96 infants born to mothers with GDM, (ii) 78 infants born to mothers with PE, (iii) 31 infants born to mothers with GDM and PE, and (iv) 50 typically developing infants. Early spontaneous movements, including not only fidgety movements but also concurrent movement and postural patterns, were assessed using the General Movements Assessment (GMA), which determines the Motor Optimality Score-Revised (MOS-R). Comparisons were made using one-way ANOVA for normally distributed continuous variables, Kruskal-Wallis test for non-normally distributed data, and Pearson chi-squared for categorical variables. Univariate logistic regression analyses were used to determine the odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results There were no differences between the three groups, which included infants whose mothers had at least one of these risk factors (p>0.05). Infants born to mothers with GDM, infants born to mothers with PE, and infants born to mothers with both GDM and PE had more aberrant fidgety movements, reduced age-adequate movement repertoire, and more abnormal postural patterns than typically developing infants (p<0.05), in addition to lower MOS-R. When looking at those with ≤24 in MOS-R, the odds ratios were ≥2.74. Conclusion Findings suggest that early spontaneous movements, GMA, may play a crucial role in understanding developmental outcomes of these infants and in determining infants who need early intervention.

Evidence of human exposure and associated risk factors to Rift Valley fever in selected districts of Central and Western Zambia

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is an important viral zoonotic disease that not only affects ruminants but causes serious morbidity and mortality in humans. In humans, its symptoms range from mild flu-like signs to a severe form such as retinal damage, meningoencephalitis to haemorrhagic fever. In this study, 202 human serum samples were collected from central and western parts of Zambia and tested for RVF-specific antibodies using a commercially available ELISA kit. A pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data for determining hypothesised risk factors for exposure to RVF. The participants enrolled in this study, were only those who are at high risk of RVF infection and were in close contact with animals and animal products. The study revealed an overall seropositivity of 9.90%, occupationally distributed as 16.67% among slaughter house workers, 14.41% among livestock farmers, and 0% among the others (i.e., students, butchery, and farm workers). The prevalence was highest (19.23%) in Sesheke district found in the western part of Zambia, while Chisamba district in central Zambia had the lowest prevalence (1.41). Movement of animals in search of greener pastures was identified as a risk factor to being RVF-seropositive. This suggests that there was silent circulation of the virus in the interepidemic period in the study areas. Therefore, this study recommends that public education of livestock farmers, public health workers, slaughterhouse workers, communities, livestock and veterinary staff needs to be enhanced to increase awareness and preparedness for RVF outbreak in Zambia.
