Mortality among sexual and gender minority populations: A systematic review

Sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations experience elevated rates of negative health outcomes (e.g., suicidality) and social determinants (e.g., poverty), which have been associated with general population mortality risk. Despite evidence of disparities in threats to well-being, it remains unclear whether SGM individuals have greater risk of mortality. This systematic review synthesized evidence on mortality among studies that included information about SGM. Three independent coders examined 6,255 abstracts, full-text reviewed 107 articles, and determined that 38 met inclusion criteria: 1) contained a sexual orientation or gender identity (SOGI) measure; 2) focused on a mortality outcome; 3) provided SGM vs non-SGM (i.e., exclusively heterosexual and cisgender) or general population comparisons of mortality outcomes; 4) were peer-reviewed; and 5) were available in English. A search of included articles’ references yielded 5 additional studies (total n = 43). The authors used the NIH’s Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies to assess included studies. Mortality outcomes included all-cause (n = 27), suicide/intentional self harm (n = 23), homicide (n = 7), and causes related to drug use (n = 3). Compared to non-SGM people, 14 studies (32.6%) supported higher mortality for SGM, 28 studies (65.1%) provided partial support of higher mortality for SGM (e.g., greater mortality from one cause but not another), one study (2.3%) found no evidence of higher mortality for SGM. There was considerable heterogeneity in operational definitions of SGM populations across studies. Although mixed, findings suggest elevated mortality for SGM versus non-SGM populations. Integrating SOGI measures into mortality surveillance would enhance understanding of disparities by standardizing data collection, thereby reducing heterogeneity and increasing capacity to aggregate results (e.g., meta-analyses).

Exploring ethical considerations in medical research: Harnessing pre-generated transformers for AI-powered ethics discussions

Introduction In medical research involving human subjects, ethical review is essential to protect individuals. However, concerns have been raised about variations in ethical review opinions and a decline in review quality. Adequately protecting human subjects requires multifaceted opinions from ethics committee members. Despite the need to increase the number of committee members, resources are limited. To address these challenges, we explored the use of a generative pre- learning transformer, an interactive artificial intelligence (AI) tool, to discuss ethical issues in medical research. Methods The generation AI used in the research used ChatGPT3.5, which has learned ethical guidelines from various countries worldwide. We requested the generative AI to provide insights on ethical considerations for virtual research involving individuals. The obtained answers were documented and verified by experts. Results The AI successfully highlighted considerations for informed consent regarding individuals with dementia and mental illness, as well as concerns about invasiveness in research. It also raised points about potential side effects of off-label drug use. However, it could not offer specific measures for psychological considerations or broader ethical issues, providing limited ethical insights. This limitation may be attributed to biased opinions resulting from machine learning optimization, preventing comprehensive identification of certain ethical issues. Conclusion Although the validity of ethical opinions generated by the generative AI requires further examination, our findings suggest that this technology could be employed to prompt reviews and re-evaluate ethical concerns arising in research.

Impact of pharmacist-led intervention for reducing drug-related problems and improving quality of life among chronic kidney disease patients: A randomized controlled trial

Introduction Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients suffer from different comorbid conditions and are prone toward drug-related problems (DRPs) which affect their clinical parameters as well as quality of life (QoL). This study was aimed to evaluate the impact of clinical pharmacist-led interventions on the mean number of DRPs and the mean QoL score difference per patient DRPs in CKD patients. Method An open-labeled, randomized control trial performed from April 2023 to July 2023 in the nephrology unit of a tertiary care setting in Peshawar Pakistan. Those patients who met the inclusion criteria were randomized into two groups 1:1, i.e., control and intervention group. Clinical pharmacists identified the DRPs at baseline using Pharmaceutical Care Network Europe (PCNE) 9.1 guidelines. The QoL of patients were assessed at baseline and endpoint by using the Functional Assessment of Non-Life-Threatening Conditions (FANLTC) questionnaire. Results A total of 100 patients were recruited having 50 in each group. The pharmacist identified a total of n = 230 DRPs in the intervention group, majority of the DRPs were attributed to inappropriate drug selection according to guidelines/formulary”; “inappropriate combinations of drugs or with herbal medications or dietary supplements”; and situations where “too many different drugs or active ingredients were prescribed”. There was 46.52% reduction in the DRPs while comparing baseline and endpoint interventions suggested by pharmacist in the intervention group. The clinical pharmacist provided interventions in order to resolve the DRPs, and 37.40% interventions were accepted and fully implemented; 31.30% of the interventions were accepted and partially implemented. The clinical pharmacist identification and proposed intervention for DRPs contributed to a statistically significant improvement in QoL, from mean ±  SD scored 58.64 ±  9.10 at the baseline to 74.48 ± 10.11 at the endpoint, with a p-value of < 0.001. Conclusion A significant improvement in the QoL and laboratory parameters for patients with CKD following clinical pharmacist-led interventions having proposed interventions were implemented successfully from baseline to endpoint; however, a considerable number of proposed interventions were not accepted and implemented.

Herding unmasked: Insights into cryptocurrencies, stocks and US ETFs

Herding behavior has become a familiar phenomenon to investors, with potential dangers of both undervaluing and overvaluing assets, while also threatening market stability. This study contributes to the literature on herding behavior by using a recent dataset, covering the most impactful events of recent years. To our knowledge, this is the first study examining herding behavior across three different types of investment vehicle and also the first study observing herding at a community (subset) level. Specifically, we first explore this phenomenon in each separate type of investment vehicle, namely stocks, US ETFs and cryptocurrencies, using the Cross-Sectional Absolute Deviation model. We find mostly similar herding patterns for stocks and US ETFs. Subsequently, the same experiment is implemented on a combination of all three investment vehicles. For a deeper investigation, we adopt graph-based techniques including the Minimum Spanning Tree and Louvain community detection to partition the combination into smaller subsets to detect herding behavior for each subset. We find that herding behavior exists at all times across all types of investment vehicle at a subset level, although perhaps not at the superset level, and that this herding behavior tends to stem from specific events that solely impact that subset of assets. Lastly, we explore herding by examining the financial contagion effects between these types of investment vehicle. Results show that US ETFs not only have a tendency to propagate similar trading behaviors in stocks and especially cryptocurrencies but also show self-reinforcing herding behavior, acting as drivers of their own trends.

Physical determinants of daily physical activity in older men and women

Introduction The ability to perform bodily movement varies in ageing men and women. We investigated whether physical fitness may explain sex differences in daily physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) among older people. Methods In this cross-sectional study, a population-based cohort of 75, 80, and 85-year-old men and women (n = 409, 62% women) underwent laboratory-based assessment of walking speed, maximal knee extension strength, and body fat percentage. Free-living physical activity was assessed as total PAEE, and light (LPA) and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) using individually calibrated combined accelerometry and heart rate sensing. Path modelling was used to examine indirect associations between sex, physical fitness, and physical activity. Results Men had better physical fitness and higher overall PAEE (mean 34.0 (SD 10.8) kJ/kg/day) than women (28.3 (8.4) kJ/kg/day, p<0.001). The path model for PAEE explained 33% of the variance. The direct association between sex and PAEE was non-significant, whereas the association between sex and PAEE mediated by body fat (β = 0.20, p<0.001) and walking speed (β = 0.05, p = 0.001) were statistically significant. Similarly, associations between sex and MVPA mediated by body fat (β = 0.11, p = 0.002) and walking speed (β = 0.05, p = 0.001) were significant, as were the associations between sex and LPA mediated by body fat (β = 0.24, p<0.001) and walking speed (β = 0.03, p = 0.019). Conclusion Differences in physical activity between men and women may reflect underlying differences in cardiorespiratory fitness and adiposity. These results highlight the importance of maintaining physical fitness to support active living in older adults.

Crankshaft high cycle bending fatigue test method based on the combined extended Kalman filtering algorithm and different failure criterion parameters

In this paper, an accelerated bending fatigue test method for the crankshaft was proposed based on the combination of the extended Kalman filtering algorithm method (EKF) and different failure criterion parameters. First the intrinsic frequency of the system and the fatigue crack depth were chosen to be the failure criterion parameters based on the test regulation and the theory of fracture mechanics. Then the extended Kalman filtering method was adopted in predicting the remaining high cycle fatigue life of the crankshaft during the experiment process. Finally the predicted fatigue life was selected to replace the actual test results for the key fatigue property parameter analysis. Based on this research, the time duration of the test was reduced obviously without affecting the key analysis parameters obviously. In addition, compared with the intrinsic frequency of the system, the fatigue crack depth is more suitable to be selected as the failure criterion to provide more reasonable enhancing effect. The main conclusions draw from this paper can provide some theoretical guidance for the design and manufacturing process of the part.

Effects of amino acid value-added urea on rice growth and nitrogen utilization

To investigate the impact of amino acid value-added urea on rice growth and nitrogen utilization, this study aimed to provide insights into enhancing the quality and efficiency of traditional nitrogen fertilizers using small molecule active substances. Amino acids were added at 5‰ and 5% levels to create different levels of amino acid value-added urea (AU0.5 and AU5) by blending with urea as test materials. Pot experiments were conducted using ’Liangyouhua 6’ rice as the test crop, with four treatment groups: non-urea (CK), regular urea (U), and amino acid value-added urea (AU0.5, AU5) at two different addition ratios. All treatments, except the control, had the same application rates of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. After harvesting the rice, plant and soil samples were collected from various depths to analyze the nutrient composition of rice, nitrogen content of fertilizer in different soil layers, and 15N abundance. The results showed that amino acid-added urea significantly enhanced biomass accumulation in different parts of rice. Compared to U, rice straw and grain biomass increased by 25.27% to 32.74% and 21.71% to 27.77% under AU0.5 and AU5 treatments, respectively. In terms of nitrogen application, effective panicle and grain numbers per panicle in AU0.5 and AU5 rice were 17.37% to 21.05% and 8.76% to 15.33% higher than in U, with a significant difference between AU0.5 and U. Furthermore, total aboveground nitrogen and fertilizer nitrogen accumulation in rice treated with AU0.5 and AU5 increased by 3.59% to 5.09% and 3.31% to 8.49%, respectively, compared to U. The accumulation of fertilizer nitrogen in grains and leaves also showed increases of 2.86% to 6.32% and 4.38% to 16.25%, respectively, compared to U. This study found that the application of amino acid value-added urea had a significant impact on the accumulation of fertilizer nitrogen in straw. Further analysis showed that it improved both the apparent nitrogen utilization efficiency and fertilizer nitrogen utilization efficiency. Compared to ordinary urea, the apparent nitrogen utilization efficiency of AU0.5 and AU5 increased by 23.71% and 33.93%, respectively, while the utilization efficiency of 15N increased by 15.66% and 6.78%, respectively. The residual fertilizer nitrogen in soil treated with amino acid value-added urea was mainly found in the 0-30cm soil layer, reducing nitrogen leaching downwards. Additionally, the nitrogen loss rate was significantly lower (reduced by 12.39%-12.97%) compared to regular urea. The difference between AU0.5 and AU5 was not significant, but AU5 showed an 18.80% higher fertilizer nitrogen residual rate than U. Overall, the study concluded that amino acid value-added urea promoted rice growth by enhancing nitrogen absorption, improving transport to grains, increasing nitrogen fertilizer efficiency, reducing nitrogen leaching, and lowering nitrogen loss rate. The best results were observed with the addition of 5‰ amino acid.

Neuronal oscillations and functional connectivity of paced nostril breathing: A high-density EEG study

Controlling nostril airflow through hand manipulations is an ancient yoga technique that has been suggested to provide targeted modulation of neuronal excitability and regulation of autonomic function, which is known to be lateralized in the brain. Here, we examined if unilateral and alternate nostril breathing differentially impacts brain network oscillations measured by high-density EEG in healthy control participants with no prior experience in breathing techniques. We found that paced nostril breathing both decreased alpha/mu oscillations over central and parietal areas and increased frontal midline and occipital theta oscillations when comparing to spontaneous breathing. Alternate nostril breathing suppressed alpha/mu oscillation more than left nostril breathing. Unilateral nostril breathing resulted in an ipsilateral increase in alpha connectivity while left nostril breathing increased anterior-posterior midline theta connectivity. In contrast to the EEG results, heart rate, heart rate variability, and cognitive performance assessed with a working memory task did not differ significantly by breathing condition. Our results add to the existent literature on nasal breathing by demonstrating changes in cortical oscillations and connectivity during a task that combined slow breathing with manual nasal pathway modulation.

Assessment of ChatGPT-generated medical Arabic responses for patients with metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease

Background and aim Artificial intelligence (AI)-powered chatbots, such as Chat Generative Pretrained Transformer (ChatGPT), have shown promising results in healthcare settings. These tools can help patients obtain real-time responses to queries, ensuring immediate access to relevant information. The study aimed to explore the potential use of ChatGPT-generated medical Arabic responses for patients with metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Methods An English patient questionnaire on MASLD was translated to Arabic. The Arabic questions were then entered into ChatGPT 3.5 on November 12, 2023. The responses were evaluated for accuracy, completeness, and comprehensibility by 10 Saudi MASLD experts who were native Arabic speakers. Likert scales were used to evaluate: 1) Accuracy, 2) Completeness, and 3) Comprehensibility. The questions were grouped into 3 domains: (1) Specialist referral, (2) Lifestyle, and (3) Physical activity. Results Accuracy mean score was 4.9 ± 0.94 on a 6-point Likert scale corresponding to “Nearly all correct.” Kendall’s coefficient of concordance (KCC) ranged from 0.025 to 0.649, with a mean of 0.28, indicating moderate agreement between all 10 experts. Mean completeness score was 2.4 ± 0.53 on a 3-point Likert scale corresponding to “Comprehensive” (KCC: 0.03–0.553; mean: 0.22). Comprehensibility mean score was 2.74 ± 0.52 on a 3-point Likert scale, which indicates the responses were “Easy to understand” (KCC: 0.00–0.447; mean: 0.25). Conclusion MASLD experts found that ChatGPT responses were accurate, complete, and comprehensible. The results support the increasing trend of leveraging the power of AI chatbots to revolutionize the dissemination of information for patients with MASLD. However, many AI-powered chatbots require further enhancement of scientific content to avoid the risks of circulating medical misinformation.

Predicted distribution of curl-leaf mountain mahogany (Cercocarpus ledifolius) in the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area

Distributions of plants are expected to change in response to climate change, but the relative probability of that change is often unknown. Curl-leaf mountain mahogany (Cercocarpus ledifolius), an important browse species used by ungulates as forage and cover across the western US, is thought to be moderately to highly vulnerable to climate change this century, and a reduction in curl-leaf mountain mahogany occurrence may negatively impact ungulates reliant upon it. A combination of probability density estimation and vector analysis was used to predict curl-leaf mountain mahogany distribution across the species range relative to climate space and how that relationship would affect curl-leaf mountain mahogany at a local scale. Locally, we used the curl-leaf mountain mahogany population at the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area (BICA) in Montana and Wyoming for comparison. We modeled the probability of curl-leaf mountain mahogany occurrence across its distribution using water balance data to spatially and temporally assess the vulnerability of a population at a local scale. Modeled probabilities of occurrence and vector analysis indicated the species to remain in some areas within BICA but will be vulnerable in others given the predicted changes in temperature and precipitation in BICA if historical trajectories continue. This information allows managers to direct limited resources to other management actions by using the best available science to inform decisions. Other curl-leaf mountain mahogany populations currently inhabiting wetter, drier sites may follow a similar trajectory as the effects of climate change manifest. The approach used serves as a model to assess the predicted trend for species-specific plant communities of concern that may be adversely affected by climate change.

The RNA-binding protein Puf5 and the HMGB protein Ixr1 regulate cell cycle-specific expression of CLB1 and CLB2 in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Clb1 and Clb2 are functionally redundant B-type cyclins, and the clb1Δ clb2Δ double mutant is lethal. In normal mitotic growth, Clb2 plays the central role in the G2-M progression. We previously demonstrated that the RNA-binding protein Puf5 positively regulates CLB1 expression by downregulating expression of the repressor Ixr1. The decreased expression of CLB1 by the puf5Δ mutation caused a severe growth defect of the puf5Δ clb2Δ double mutant. On the contrary, CLB2 expression was unchanged between wild-type strain and puf5Δ mutant in unsynchronized cultures, and the puf5Δ clb1Δ double mutant did not show growth retardation. Therefore, we assumed that CLB1 is the main target of Puf5 in the previous study. However, considering that CLB1 and CLB2 reportedly undergo a similar expression pattern during the cell cycle, we re-examined CLB2 expression in the puf5Δ mutant in cell cycle-synchronized cultures and found that CLB2 expression was decreased in the puf5Δ mutant strain. Deletion of IXR1 restored the decreased expression of CLB2 caused by the puf5Δ mutation. Moreover, we clarified that the decreased expression of CLB2 caused by the puf5Δ mutation resulted in the growth defect in the S-phase cyclin deficient condition: the puf5Δ clb1Δ clb5Δ clb6Δ quadruple mutant grew worse than clb1Δ clb5Δ clb6Δ triple mutant, and the slow growth of the puf5Δ clb1Δ clb5Δ clb6Δ quadruple mutant was suppressed by CLB2 overexpression. Moreover, the ixr1Δ mutation is known to be synthetically lethal with deletion of the DUN1 gene encoding the checkpoint kinase. We found that the clb2Δ mutation restored the lethality of ixr1Δ dun1Δ double mutant. Our results suggest that Puf5 and Ixr1 regulate the cell cycle-specific expression of both CLB1 and CLB2, that Clb5 and Clb6 have overlapping roles with Clb1 and Clb2, and that the regulation of CLB1 and CLB2 expression by Puf5 and Ixr1 is related to the function of Dun1 kinase.

Plant growth-promoting microorganisms as natural stimulators of nitrogen uptake in citrus

Improving nitrogen uptake efficiency by citrus in Mediterranean areas, where this crop predominates, is crucial for reducing ground-water pollution and enhancing environmental sustainability. This aligns with the Farm to Fork Strategy (European Green Deal) objectives, which aim to reduce the use of mineral fertilizers by up to 20% and to eliminate soil contamination from nitrogen entirely. In this context, exploring the potential of plant growth-promoting bacteria application to reduce nutrient inputs is a promising opportunity. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of two Bacillus subtilis strains either individually inoculated or in combination with Saccharomyces cerevisiae on 15N-labeled fertilizer uptake efficiency and physiological parameters. Individual inoculations positively affected tree water potential, leaf chlorophyll concentrations (SPAD-values) and photosynthetic performance, enhancing tree growth. Fertilizer-15N use efficiency increased, as did phosphorus and potassium uptakes. Conversely, no response was observed in the trees co-inoculated with S cerevisiae. Therefore, PGPB can be considered an interesting means to reduce reliance on synthetic fertilizers in citrus orchards, minimizing the environmental impact and promoting sustainable production practices.

Estimation of supply and demand for public health nurses in Japan: A stock-flow approach

Public health nurses (PHNs) play a central role in community health in Japan, and the number of certified PHNs has decreased since 2011. However, thus far, no study has estimated the supply and demand of PHNs in the coming years. The present study aimed to estimate the future balance between supply and demand for PHNs in Japan. This simulation study adopted a stock-flow approach using data from a survey of local governments, log data from a recruitment information website, and government statistics. The supply was estimated by adding up the numbers of newly hired PHNs and job changers to that of PHNs from the human resource pool. The demand was estimated from the number of PHNs needed in the future calculated by demographics assumed to affect the demand for PHNs. At the current job change rate to PHNs, the gaps between future supply and demand of PHNs were expected to be −494 to −50 in 2025, −1,007 to −435 in 2030, and −772 to −330 in 2035. If the job change rate would be 1.5 times, the gaps were estimated to be 285 to 729 in 2025, −431 to 141 in 2030, and −182 to 260 in 2035. If the job change rate would be 2.0 times, the supply was sufficient for all estimated years. The number of PHNs working in Japanese local governments is estimated to decline until 2035, resulting in a shortage. Policy makers should consider early measures to adjust the future number of PHNs.

Link between bilaterality and type 2 inflammation in respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartomas: A two-center retrospective cohort study

Background Sinonasal respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartomas (REAH) are rare benign lesions with diverse clinical characteristics. Their pathogenesis remains unclear, with hypotheses suggesting either an inflammatory process or neoplastic origin. Despite their clinical heterogeneity, a formal subtype classification is lacking. This study analyzes the clinical features of surgically treated sinonasal REAH and investigates disease characteristics based on bilaterality, particularly in relation to type 2 chronic rhinosinusitis. Methods This retrospective analysis included patients with REAH who underwent endoscopic surgery and received pathological confirmation between November 2008 and November 2023. Demographic data, including asthma history, prior sinus surgeries, serum eosinophil levels, and the Japanese Epidemiological Survey of Refractory Eosinophilic Chronic Rhinosinusitis (JESREC) score, were analyzed in relation to REAH bilaterality. Results Among 21 patients (17 males, 4 females; mean age 46.5 years), 11 cases (52.4%) exhibited bilateral origins (REAH_bi) in the superior nasal septum and olfactory cleft, while 10 cases (47.6%) presented as isolated unilateral lesions (REAH_uni). REAH_bi was significantly associated with asthma (p = 0.012), prior sinus surgery (p = 0.002), and inflammatory polyposis (p = 0.002) compared to REAH_uni. Elevated preoperative serum eosinophil levels and JESREC scores were also noted in REAH_bi cases (p = 0.021 and <0.001, respectively). Neither group showed recurrence during a mean follow-up of 11.91 months. Conclusion Bilaterally originating REAH in the superior nasal septum and olfactory cleft demonstrates pronounced type 2 inflammatory characteristics, suggesting potential differences in pathogenesis compared to unilateral REAH. These findings underscore the need for further investigation into REAH pathophysiology and emphasize the importance of bilaterality in clinical assessment.

Characteristics of chicken production systems in rural Burkina Faso: A focus on One Health related practices and food security

In addition to having cultural importance, village chicken production remains an important source of cash income for most rural households in Burkina Faso. However, strict biosecurity and good management of chicken flocks are required to reduce the risk of exposure of communities to chicken waste at household level. We characterized village production systems in rural Burkina Faso in relation to importance to food security, biosecurity, husbandry and chicken health management. We surveyed 483 chicken-producing households and carried out 20 focus group discussions separately with men and women chicken producers in Boussouma commune, a typical rural setting. Crop farming was reported as the main income-generating activity carried out by chicken producers (79.5%). Seveny six per cent of households sold chicken to local markets. Chicken production and sales were aligned to social/cultural events (religious festivals, weddings, etc…) and school-fee payment period. While men spent more revenues from chicken production on agriculture and household equipment’s, women spent more on food, education and medical expenses. The chicken management system is mainly extensive scavenging, with most farmers (81.4%) keeping 5 to 50 birds with little or no supplementary feeding and rudimentary housing. Most producers indicated that Newcastle disease was the main cause of chicken mortality. While men consider high disease burden, lack of finance, and poor chicken housing as the major constraints, women prioritized the lack of adequate chicken housing, lack of feeds and limited access to veterinary services. With locally adapted interventions that build one a One Health approach, village chicken keeping has the potential to secure and greatly improve smallholder livelihoods and household food security, while preserving public health in Burkina Faso.

The El Niño Southern Oscillation and the salinity of land and water in the United States

The El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a periodic climate phenomenon with important consequences for weather and socioeconomic variables worldwide. This paper investigates the effect of El Niño on the concentration of salts in soils and fresh water. Our analysis shows effects that are statistically significant and large in magnitude. In particular, in response to El Niño events, soil salinity increases by 21% in the northern region of the United States, where average temperatures are positively affected, while it decreases by 29% on average in the southern tiers of the country, where temperatures decline. Similarly, fresh water salinity increases by 9% in warmer counties, while it is 53% lower in cooler counties.

RETRACTED: Design and validation of ultra-compact metamaterial-based biosensor for non-invasive cervical cancer diagnosis in terahertz regime

Cervical cancer belongs to the most dangerous types of cancers posing considerable threat to women’s survival. It is most often diagnosed in the advanced stages as precancerous lesions are often symptom-free and difficult to identify. Microwave imaging, especially in terahertz (THz) range, is a convenient and noninvasive cancer detection tool. It enables characterization of biological tissues and discrimination between healthy and malignant ones. This study presents a novel triple-band biosensor based on metamaterials (MTMs). By leveraging unique properties of MTMs, the proposed biosensor operates as a perfect absorber. It exploits resonant modes in the THz spectrum to achieve remarkable sensitivity. Meticulous selection of the sensor geometry and dimensions enables efficient miniaturization. Meanwhile, utilization of frequency-domain data to detect refractive index changes improves resolution of cancerous tissue identification. Extensive numerical investigations corroborate its ability to carry out reliable early-stage cervical cancer diagnosis. This includes identification of the spatial extent of the malignant tissue. Excellent electrical properties of the sensor are accompanied by its compact size, which is highly desirable for non-invasive and portable applications.

Some new applications of the fractional integral and four-parameter Mittag-Leffler function

The article reveals new applications of the four-parameter Mittag-Leffler function (MLF) in geometric function theory (GFT), using fractional calculus notions. The purpose of this study is to propose and explore a new integral operator of order λ using fractional calculus and the four-parameter MLF. The techniques of differential subordination theory are employed in order to derive certain univalence conditions for the newly defined fractional calculus operator involving the Mittag-Leffler function. In the proved theorems and corollaries of the paper, it is specified that the fractional integral operator of the four parameter MLF satisfies the conditions to be starlike and convex. It is also proved that the newly defined operator is a starlike, convex, and close-to-convex function of positive and negative orders, respectively. The geometric properties demonstrated for the fractional integral of the four-parameter MLF show that this function could be a valuable resource for developing the study of geometric functions theory, differential subordination, and superordination theory.

Structure in transition: The role of structure in facilitating workplace efficacy and belonging for military veterans and civilians

Employment transitions necessitate a degree of uncertainty and lack of control, which may present a challenge to succeeding and belonging at a new organization. The present research tests ideas derived from compensatory control theory which posits that people may seek external structure to help exert control over their lives when they experience a lack of control in an important life domain – and that this can aid in their goal pursuit. Across three studies, we explore whether the perception of a higher degree of organizational structure can help employees compensate for uncertainty and lack of control and facilitate transitioning employees’ occupation self-efficacy and sense of belonging in a new work environment. This research focuses on military veterans, who face significant challenges during their separation from military service and transition to civilian employment, as an exemplar of the people experiencing employment transitions more generally, and compares them (in two studies) with civilian participants. Across three studies, two using simple correlational methods, one using an experimental methodology with veterans and civilians, we find consistent evidence that when transitioning employees perceive greater structure at their organization, this facilitates increased feelings of occupational self-efficacy which, in turn, promotes greater feelings of belonging at work. When people perceive greater structure in their environment, people feel more efficacious and a greater sense that they belong at work. The results are discussed in the context of compensatory control theory, addressing the challenges of transitioning employees, and in particular, transitioning military veterans.

Hydrodynamic performance assessment of emerged and sub-merged semicircular breakwaters under random waves: An experimental and empirical study

Mangrove ecosystems and other coastal protection structures are essential barriers protecting coastal populations from the damaging effects of wave energy and increasing sea levels. This study uses a semicircular breakwater (SBW) model in an effort to develop coastal protection measures. The hydrodynamic characteristics of the SBW under random wave conditions, including the transmission coefficient, reflection coefficient, and energy loss coefficient, were thoroughly investigated using physical model experimentation. The main objectives encompass understanding the behavior of the SBW model, developing empirical equations to estimate hydraulic characteristics, and enhancing coastal protection structures to facilitate the preservation and expansion of mangrove ecosystems. Hydrodynamic features of the SBW model were assessed across a spectrum of wave conditions. Experimental testing in a wave flume encompassed a range of relative water depths (d/h), including d/h = 0.667 for an emerged SBW, d/h = 1.000 for an alternatively submerged SBW, and fully submerged conditions for d/h = 1.333 and 1.667. Wave steepness (Hi/L) varied from 0.02 to 0.06, and wave periods ranged from 0.8 to 2.5 seconds. Notably, analysis of an emerged SBW with d/h = 0.667 revealed superior wave attenuation compared to d/h = 1.000, 1.333, and 1.667 configurations.
