Abstract The economic development of a country is profoundly influenced by how it protects and utilizes its natural resources, one of which is wastewater, with emphasis on environmental sustainability. For this multi-factorial sustainability analysis, this study introduces a novel Fuzzy Parameterized Fuzzy Hypersoft Set (FPFHSS) structure to develop a comprehensive decision-making and performance evaluation system for wastewater treatment facilities. The practicality of the designed system is explored by highlighting its ability to evaluate urban projects and work as a decision-making system for environmental policy design. The study introduces an algorithm based on the hypersoft structure, allowing the division of attributes into sub-attributes for a more concise analysis. The sub-parametric values are first parameterized into fuzzy numbers and then evaluated based on their relative importance. With proper fuzzy parameterization of each sub-attribute, novel specialized FPFHSS based Technique of Ordered Preference Similar to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) and Multi-Objective Optimization on the basis of a Ratio Analysis (MULTIMOORA) approaches are developed that provide a versatile analysis in addition to the newly developed algorithm. With these 3 specialized systems, 4 case studies were developed based on 19 pseudo-realistic environmental, social, technical, and economic factors each simulating a different scenario faced by nations highlighting sustainability, technical performance and the environment allowing for informed decision-making while addressing uncertainty making them highly suitable as a computational AI solution for real-data analysis. This fuzzy analysis offers a reference for making informed decisions in the context of environmental remediation and complex scenario simulations.

Abstract The bee-wax combs are “the biggest organ of the bee colony body” as, in addition to their structural functions, they transfer information – pheromones and sounds. The lack of quality control procedures for bee-wax foundation, leads to a deterioration of this raw material, among others with the addition of paraffin and/or stearin. The adulteration of beeswax, from which wax foundation is produced, affects the mechanical strength of the combs and the development of the brood. Little is known about the effects of these adulterants on bees’ biochemistry and physiology. Therefore, the activity of the antioxidant system (SOD, CAT, GPx, GST and Vg) was determined in the hemolymph of bees reared on pure wax and wax adulterated with paraffin (10%, 30% or 50%) or stearin (10%, 30% or 50%). Additionally, the level of global DNA methylation in the brain of these bees was identified. We showed for the first time that paraffin or stearin strongly suppressed the activity of the antioxidant system, including Vg, in honeybee workers emerged from larvae reared on combs adulterated with these compounds. Stearin was much more harmful and may cause serious metabolic disturbances, including an increase in the global DNA methylation. This is important new information that serves as a warning to wax foundation producers and beekeepers. Therefore, there is an urgent need to introduce proper procedures and regulations for the routine quality evaluation of wax intended for the production of the bee comb building foundation.

The impact of postoperative atrial fibrillation on complications and mortality following Ivor Lewis esophagectomy for esophageal cancer

Abstract Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is a common complication following transthoracic esophagectomy, with an incidence rate between 12% and 37%. POAF has been associated with adverse outcomes, including pulmonary complications, anastomotic leakage, prolonged ICU stays and increased in-hospital mortality. This study investigates the impact of POAF on postoperative outcomes in a high-volume center and evaluates its role as a predictor of postoperative complications following Ivor-Lewis esophagectomy.This retrospective, single-center cohort study was conducted at the University Hospital of Cologne, Germany. Patients, who underwent elective Ivor-Lewis esophagectomy for cancer, were included (n = 617). Perioperative data were extracted retrospectively from a prospectively maintained database, capturing demographic, surgical, and postoperative variables. POAF was defined as a hemodynamically significant tachyarrhythmia absoluta that occurs within the first 7 days postoperatively and has been confirmed via ECG. Statistical analyses included univariate and multivariate logistic regression to identify associations between POAF and postoperative outcomes.POAF occurred in a significant proportion of patients (n = 79, 12,8%) and was strongly associated with adverse outcomes. Patients with POAF demonstrated higher rates of pulmonary complications (24.0% vs. 11.2%, *p < .01), anastomotic leakage (32.9% vs. 10.5%, *p < .01), and prolonged ICU stays (median 7 days vs. 2 days, *p < .01). The in-hospital mortality rate in the POAF group was 7.6%, compared to 1% in patients without POAF (*p < .01). Independent predictors of POAF included older age, pre-existing atrial fibrillation and beta-blocker therapy. Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) was a significant predictor of adverse postoperative outcomes. Logistic regression analysis revealed that POAF was associated with higher odds of anastomotic leakage (OR = 3.11, *p < .01), ICU readmission (OR = 6.80, *p < .01), in-hospital mortality (OR = 6.76, *p < .01) and 90-Day mortality ( OR = 5.44, *p < .01). In our cohort, POAF was not significantly associated with oncological recurrence (OR = 0.71; p = .219). These findings highlight the critical role of POAF in predicting postoperative complications.POAF is both - a complication and a potential marker - for systemic stress, predicting further adverse events such as anastomotic leakage and respiratory insufficiency. Although some studies suggest that POAF does not affect long-term survival, its pronounced impact on short-term morbidity underscores the necessity of early identification and focused management. Preoperative risk stratification and intraoperative strategies, such as goal-directed fluid therapy, could mitigate the impact of POAF. Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) significantly influences recovery after esophagectomy, serving as a marker for increased morbidity and mortality. Advanced age, hypertension, and respiratory complications emerged as key independent risk factors. Additionally, POAF was linked to longer hospital stays, in-hospital and 90-day mortality and a heightened incidence of postoperative complications, including pneumonia and anastomotic leakage. These results highlight the critical importance of implementing targeted perioperative strategies to reduce risks and enhance outcomes in this high-risk patient population.

Abstract In this study, the mechanism of fragmentation including void formation in an injectable calcium-phosphate cement of paste-like artificial bone grafting material, is clarified from the point of view of mathematical modeling. Instead of modeling from physical laws or chemical reactions, phenomenological modeling is used, and three experiments are performed to build the model. We then successfully use the results in terms of the equations and necessary assumptions to construct a simple mathematical model. Our proposed model is based on the mathematically well-known Allen-Cahn type equation. The state of the paste is used as an unknown function. After scaling according to the appropriate nondimensionalization, numerical simulations are performed. The numerical results represent the setting behavior of the paste, which is difficult to observe experimentally. The integration of mathematical and experimental results provides deep insight into the mechanism of non-fragmentation property of an injectable calcium-phosphate cement.
