Towards point-of-care HIV testing: Terahertz PCF sensor integration and miniaturization

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus, or HIV, is a retrovirus which aims at CD4 cells in particular to destroy the body’s natural defenses along with impair its capacity for fighting off illness plus ailments. In this circumstance we suggested a Photonic Crystal Fiber (PCF) sensor for detection of this lethal virus. Our intended sensor exhibits Max Relative Sensitivity (RS) 95.2% & 95% for x & y axis correspondingly when f = 3.0 THz. It also impresses us with minimal Confinement Loss (CL) of 1.06 × 10−7 & 2.04 × 10-7dB/m plus Effective Material Loss (EML) of 0.0078 & 0.0110 cm−1 in that order for x & y axis. Initial detection alongside prompt cures for HIV are made feasible by the remarkable efficacy of PCF biosensor observations in this regard. PCF gadgets offer rapid, non-invasive medical diagnosis, which simplifies the need for further evaluation & allows for an assessment of a condition’s progression as it progresses. Precise assessment may be beneficial when investigating advancements that improve worldwide identification and therapeutic choices. It is possible that the rapid identification of these harmful microbes was made possible by the remarkable identifying ability provided by the new PCF. In conclusion, healthcare offers a plethora of opportunity.

Wounding causes rapid, intense upregulation of glycolytic and fermentative genes and enzymatic activities in harvested sugarbeet roots

Abstract Sugarbeet roots are severely wounded during harvest, triggering wound-healing responses to seal off and defend damaged cells. Primary carbon metabolism is required to provide metabolic energy and substrates for wound healing processes, yet how wounding alters primary carbon metabolism is largely unstudied in sugarbeet or other plant species. Wound effects on primary carbon metabolism were determined in the 24 h following injury by evaluating changes in gene expression and enzymatic activities of primary carbon metabolic pathways. Wounding significantly altered expression of 43 primary carbon metabolic pathway genes including 3, 19, 3, 7, and 9 genes involved in sucrolysis, glycolysis, TCA cycle/organic acid metabolism, pentose phosphate pathway, and fermentation, respectively. Highly upregulated genes were involved in sucrolysis, glycolysis, and fermentation, although only enzymatic activities of glycolytic and fermentative enzymes were majorly increased. The results indicate that wounding rapidly upregulates glycolysis and fermentation, with minimal effect on sucrolysis, the TCA cycle and the pentose phosphate pathway. We propose that glycolysis has a dominant role in controlling and upregulating carbon metabolism to support wound healing in postharvest sugarbeet roots, independent of elevations in sucrose catabolism or the TCA cycle, and fermentation is intensely upregulated to maintain glycolytic flux due to the insufficient activity of the TCA cycle to metabolize glycolytic end-products.

Albuminuria, structural brain findings and Circulating biomarkers of brain injury in older adults

Abstract Albuminuria reflects systemic endothelial dysfunction, but its relationships with subclinical brain abnormalities have not been comprehensively catalogued. The Cardiovascular Health Study recruited older adults from four US communities, beginning in 1989–1990. Systematic measurements of albuminuria were performed in 1996–1997; two brain MRIs, in 1992–1994 and 1997–1999; and serum neurofilament light chain (NfL) measurements from 1996–1997 stored samples. We examined the associations of albuminuria with longitudinal progression of white matter hyperintensities (WMH) and ventricular size, incident infarcts, and cross-sectional quantitative brain volumes and circulating biomarkers of neuronal injury (n = 834–1950). Albuminuria was positively associated with ventricular grade worsening (odds ratio per doubling 1.10, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.01–1.19) and with circulating NfL levels (2% higher per doubling, 95% CI 1–4%), even after adjustment for vascular risk factors. Albuminuria was also associated with worsening of WMH, incident infarcts, and quantitative WMH and hippocampal volumes, but these latter associations appeared to reflect burden of cardiovascular risk factors. Albuminuria is independently associated with worsening ventricular size and circulating NfL, suggesting a specific role of microvascular dysfunction in brain atrophy. It also reflects cardiovascular risk factor burden on markers of vascular brain injury. These results highlight the diverse associations of albuminuria with common brain abnormalities of aging.

Multi-view affinity-based projection alignment for unsupervised domain adaptation via locality preserving optimization

Abstract Unsupervised Domain Adaptation (UDA) aims to transfer knowledge from a labeled source domain to an unlabeled target domain with differing data distributions. However, it remains difficult due to noisy pseudo-labels in the target domain, inadequate modeling of local geometric structure, and reliance on a single input view that limits representational diversity in challenging tasks. We propose a framework named Multi-view Affinity-based Projection Alignment (MAPA) that uses a teacher–student network and multi-view augmentation to stabilize pseudo-labels and enhance feature diversity. MAPA transforms each sample into multiple augmented views, constructs a unified affinity matrix that combines semantic cues from pseudo-labels with feature-based distances, and then learns a locality-preserving projection to align source and target data in a shared low-dimensional space. An iterative strategy refines pseudo-labels by discarding low-confidence samples, thereby raising label quality and strengthening supervision for the target domain. MAPA also employs a consistency-weighted fusion mechanism to merge predictions from multiple views, improving stability under domain shift. Finally, MAPA leverages class-centric and cluster-level relationships in the projected space to further refine label assignments, enhancing the overall adaptation process. Experimental results on Office-Home, ImageCLEF, and VisDA-2017 show that MAPA surpasses recent state-of-the-art methods, and it maintains robust performance across backbones including ResNet-50, ResNet-101, and Vision Transformer (ViT).

Association between novel inflammatory biomarkers SII, SIRI, and obesity in sedentary adults: NHANES 2007–2020

Abstract Sedentary behavior is prevalent in modern society and is closely associated with various chronic diseases, including obesity. The Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index (SII) and the Systemic Inflammation Response Index (SIRI), as novel inflammatory biomarkers, may play an important role in predicting obesity risk. This study utilized data from the 2007–2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to analyze the relationship between sedentary behavior, SII, SIRI, and obesity through multivariable logistic regression models. The study found that sedentary time was significantly associated with levels of SII and SIRI. In participants with sedentary time (ST) ≥ 5 h, the median values of SII and SIRI were 453.14 and 0.99, respectively, compared to participants with sedentary time < 5 h, whose median values of SII and SIRI were 437.82 and 0.91. The AUC value of lnSII was 0.70, indicating a high accuracy in predicting obesity risk, while the AUC value of SIRI was 0.55. Additionally, the proportion of obesity in the group with sedentary time ≥ 5 h was significantly higher than that in the group with sedentary time < 5 h, further emphasizing the association between sedentary behavior and obesity.This study demonstrates that sedentary behavior is associated with obesity risk through its impact on SII and SIRI levels, highlighting the potential importance of lifestyle changes, particularly reducing sedentary time, in controlling obesity. These findings support the application of SII and SIRI in obesity risk assessment, and future research is recommended to explore the potential of these markers in different populations.
