Nonlinear variations and drivers of vegetation NPP on the Tibetan Plateau: Interaction of natural and human factors

Understanding the drivers of changes in vegetation net primary productivity (NPP) is critical for comprehending ecosystem dynamics and their ability to respond to environmental shifts. However, the complexity and nonlinear variations of NPP across the Tibetan Plateau, along with spatial and temporal inconsistencies, present significant analytical challenges. This study leverages the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform and applies non-parametric trend analysis methods, such as the Sen slope estimator, Mann-Kendall test, coefficient of variation, and Hurst exponent, to investigate NPP trends from 2001 to 2021. The Optimal Parameters-based Geographical Detector (OPGD) model was employed to assess the combined effects of natural factors and human activities on NPP’s spatial distribution and variability, identifying key drivers and their optimal ranges for promoting NPP growth. Results revealed nonlinear fluctuations in NPP during the study period, ranging from 184.06 to 208.53 gC m-2.a-1, with an average annual growth rate of 1.16 gC m-2.a-1. Significant spatial differences were observed, with higher NPP in the grasslands and forests of the southeast, while lower productivity was found in the alpine deserts of the northwest. Over 55% of the study area showed an increasing trend in NPP, with 28.14% experiencing significant growth (p < 0.05). The study further indicated that natural factors such as elevation, solar radiation, and mean annual temperature were major determinants of NPP fluctuations, while human activities (e.g., distance, population density, and land use) also played a crucial role in shaping NPP patterns. The significant interaction between natural factors and human activities demonstrates synergistic enhancement and non-linear effects, highlighting the complexity of multi-factor drivers influencing NPP changes. The key promoting factors and their optimal ranges identified provide a foundation for understanding the impact of natural and human activities on NPP variation, offering scientific support for ecosystem management and sustainable development on the Tibetan Plateau.

Using Phantomless QCT for evaluating BMD evolution in maintenance hemodialysis patients

Abstract This study was aimed to investigate the evolution of bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) by using phantom-less quantitative computed tomography (PL-QCT). We collected patients with MHD in Suzhou Hospital of Nanjing Medical University from September 2020 to December 2023 as the prospective observation group. BMD of thoracolumbar vertebra, total hip and femoral neck were measured by PL-QCT. Patients with MHD were divided into 9 groups according to hemodialysis duration. Chest CT scans of patients in prospective observation group were collected during the first three months of MHD and 1 year, 2 years, 3 years after dialysis between January 2017 and December 2023 as the retrospective observation group, and BMD of the twelfth thoracic vertebra was measured. According to the BMD changes among the prospective observation group and the retrospective observation group, the evolution of thoracolumbar vertebral BMD, whole hip BMD and femoral neck BMD were comprehensively analyzed. BMD of thoracolumbar vertebra gradually decreased within 36 months in patients with MHD. Thoracolumbar vertebral BMD tended to increase when hemodialysis duration was more than 36–48 months, and thoracolumbar vertebral BMD increased significantly with hemodialysis duration when hemodialysis duration was more than 60 months, and significantly exceeded the BMD before MHD. BMD of total hip and femoral neck gradually decreased within 36 months in patients with MHD. BMD of total hip and femoral neck increased with hemodialysis duration when hemodialysis duration was more than 72 months, but was almost the same as that of the first year of MHD. In the follow-up evaluation of BMD in MHD patients, it is recommended to use QCT to measure BMD in thoracolumbar vertebrae or hip the first 3 years of MHD, and use QCT to measure BMD in thoracolumbar vertebrae to evaluate changes over 5 years of MHD.

Neurodiversity in mental simulation: conceptual but not visual imagery priming modulates perception across the imagery vividness spectrum

Abstract Mental simulation—the ability to internally model sensory, conceptual, or future events—may include mental imagery as a component, with considerable individual variability in its vividness and dependence on sensory detail. While self-reports have been widely used to assess imagery, they are subjective and prone to bias. Among more objective methods, imagery priming in binocular rivalry has been employed to investigate the influence of mental imagery on perception, but findings have been ambiguous. Here, we introduce a no-report version of the task, using eye-tracking-based optokinetic nystagmus assessment to provide a more reliable measure of perceptual shifts. In addition to visual imagery priming, we introduce conceptual priming, which does not rely on sensory imagery but engages abstract representations. In visual imagery priming, perceptual modulation correlated with self-reported vividness, and participants with low vividness did not show modulatory effects. However, in conceptual priming, effects were observed across the entire vividness spectrum, demonstrating that both concrete sensory-based and abstract conceptual representations can influence perception. These findings challenge purely sensory accounts of mental imagery. We propose avoiding deficit-based terms such as “aphantasia” and advocate for a neuroaffirmative perspective on mental simulation diversity.

Insecticidal potential of five medicinal plants: An In Vitro evaluation and molecular docking analysis of Artemisia absinthium

The Kashmir range of North-Western Himalayas harbours a large number of medicinal plants that have insecticidal, antifeedent or insect repellent properties. Herein, we evaluated the insecticidal activity of five medicinal plants including Artemisia absinthium, Acorus calamus, Digitalis purpurea, Plectranthus rugosus and Achiella millefolium against Corcyra cephalonica, Sitophilus oryzae and Helicoverpa armigera. The highest in vitro insecticidal activity was observed with the A. absinthium plant extract against the test insects. Following this, A. absinthium extract was assessed through high resolution liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (HR-LCMS). The small molecules thus identified from the A. absinthium extract were flexibly docked against the active site of acetylcholinesterase (Helicoverpa armigera) keeping the known inhibitor malaoxon as the reference. Four molecules encompassing kaempferol, diosmetin, 1,7-Bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) heptan-3-one and NP-021018 explored from the defined extract manifested the highest binding affinity than malaoxon. As kaempferol evinced the maximum binding activity towards acetylcholinesterase thus, the insecticidal activity of A. absinthium extract may be attributed to this molecule.

Abstract Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that presents substantial challenges to healthcare and pharmacological management due to its high mortality rates and complex patient responses. Accurately predicting patient outcomes is essential for optimizing therapeutic interventions and improving clinical decision-making. This study evaluates the predictive performance of the Cox proportional hazards model and advanced machine learning techniques, such as extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), gradient boosting machine (GBM), and random survival forests (RSF), in forecasting survival outcomes for sepsis patients. Feature selection methods, including adaptive elastic net (AEN), smoothly clipped absolute deviation (SCAD), minimax concave penalty (MCP), and information gain (IG), were employed to refine model performance by identifying the most relevant clinical features. The results demonstrate that XGBoost consistently outperforms the Cox model, achieving a higher concordance index and demonstrating superior accuracy in handling complex, non-linear clinical interactions. The integration of feature selection further enhanced the machine learning models’ predictive capabilities. These findings emphasize the potential of machine learning techniques to improve outcome prediction and guide personalized treatment strategies, offering valuable tools for critical care settings.
