Deep momentum networks with market trend dynamics
Time-series momentum (TSMOM) trading strategies manage positions based on the persistence of return trends. Although long short-term memory (LSTM) deep neural architectures can enhance TSMOM, their performance often deteriorates during abrupt market trend changes. This study aims to improve TSMOM performance, particularly at critical moments marked by significant shifts in long- and short-term trends. To achieve this, we combine short- and long-term signals into a comprehensive market-state representation, employing supervised learning to incorporate these market dynamics into the proposed model. In our experiments, we generate market-state features, referred to as MTDP scores, by numerically capturing changes in market trends via an extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) process. These MTDP scores are then applied within an LSTM-based trading strategy. A backtest on 99 continuous futures (1995–2021) demonstrates that incorporating MTDP scores enhances the Sharpe ratio, indicating the effectiveness of embedding market-state information in TSMOM. Notably, an 8-week fast momentum look-back window performed best over stable periods (1995–2019). However, during extreme market downturns, such as the COVID-19 crisis, a 20-week fast momentum window not only outperformed shorter windows (4- and 8-week signals) but also recovered more rapidly. These findings suggest that TSMOM strategies can benefit from dynamically adjusting fast momentum windows, consistently generating profitable opportunities even amid turbulent conditions.

Epidemiological trends and projections to 2035 of hepatitis B burden in China, 1990–2021
Background Hepatitis B virus (HBV) remains a major cause of liver disease and premature death globally, with China bearing a significant share of the burden. However, long-term trends and future projections of HBV burden in China remain insufficiently described, despite widespread infant vaccination and expanded antiviral therapy. Methods We analyzed hepatitis B–related mortality, age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR), disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), and age-standardized DALY rate (ASDR) in China from 1990 to 2021 using data extracted from the GBD 2021 database. Temporal trends were quantified by estimated annual percentage change (EAPC). Results Between 1990 and 2021, the number of deaths from hepatitis B-related liver diseases in China increased from 215 thousand to 219 thousand (+1.83%), whereas the ASMR decreased from 23.86 per 100,000 to 10.68 (EAPC: −2.78). The disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) decreased from 7.78 million in 1990 to 6.61 million in 2021 (−15.04%), with the ASDR decreasing from 774 per 100,000–329 (EAPC: −3). Despite significant reductions in HBV mortality and DALYs, the growing burden of HBV-related liver cancer, particularly among older males, remains a critical concern. Targeted early screening and treatment strategies are urgently needed. Projections for 2035 indicate a continued decline in the overall burden of hepatitis B, with the liver cancer burden showing a fluctuating decrease. Conclusion Despite progress in HBV prevention and control, the increasing burden of hepatitis B–related liver cancer remains a major public health challenge.
Progressive changes in phenotype, transcriptome and proliferation capacity characterise continued maturation and migration of intestinal cDCs in homeostasis
Abstract Conventional dendritic cells (cDCs) are important antigen presenting cells which link innate and adaptive immunity by transferring antigenic information from peripheral organs to T cells in lymph nodes (LNs). However, despite their central function in the induction of adaptive immune responses, the kinetics and molecular regulation of the cDC life cycle and migration remain poorly understood. Using a variety of in vivo techniques, we examine the kinetics of cDC turnover in the intestine and address the molecular changes throughout the various stages of the cDC life cycle – from tissue entry and differentiation to CCR7 upregulation and subsequent migration into draining LNs. Our data demonstrate that the life cycle of gut cDCs is highly dynamic, characterised by continuous alterations in transcriptome, protein expression and proliferation rates. These progressive changes culminate in cDC homeostatic activation and migration resulting in a resource-intensive daily turnover of up to a quarter of intestinal cDCs and an almost complete daily replacement of the migratory cDC compartment in the mesenteric LN. This high turnover rate ensures that the mesenteric LN maintains an accurate reflection of the intestinal immunological state, supporting rapid adaptation to emerging immune challenges.

Associations of self-reported hearing problems with long-term trajectories of mental and functional health in middle-aged and older adults: The role of self-perceptions of aging
Impaired hearing is a frequent stressful experience in later life. However, not all individuals affected by hearing problems exhibit restrictions in mental or functional health; there may be psychosocial resources that buffer the detrimental impact of impaired hearing to some extent. We investigate whether positive self-perceptions of aging (SPA, i. e. perceptions of more ongoing development and perceptions of less physical and social losses) do in fact constitute a compensatory resource and moderate between-person and within-person associations of self-reported hearing problems with trajectories of mental and functional health. Our sample comprised n = 9,705 participants in the German Ageing Survey (mean age = 62.41 years, SD = 11.58, range 40-93 years) who were assessed up to five times between 2008 and 2021. Based on longitudinal multilevel regression models, controlling for socio-demographic variables, hearing aid use, and chronic diseases, we found that individuals with overall more hearing problems reported poorer mental health. Moreover, with regard to the within-person associations, on measurement occasions when individuals reported more hearing problems, their mental and functional health was poorer. The association of more hearing problems with poorer functional health was weaker among individuals with lower perceptions of physical loss at baseline (i.e., year 2008). Among chronologically older adults, the association of more hearing problems with poorer functional health was weaker for those with higher perceptions of ongoing development at baseline. Our findings suggest that SPA related to fewer physical losses and to more ongoing development may buffer the negative impact of hearing problems on functional health.

The perception of individuals with low back pain regarding reassuring information: Insights based on physiotherapists messages
Background Clinical guidelines for the management of low back pain (LBP) emphasize the importance of reassuring patients, as this reduces concern and increases confidence in recovery. Although physiotherapists (PTs) often use reassurance strategies, the perception of the different reassuring messages remains unclear. Objective To investigate perceptions of confidence of different reassurance messages delivered by PTs to people with LBP. Methods A survey was conducted among 544 participants with LBP. The survey included 21 reassuring messages divided into six themes ‘ Prevalence and statistics’, ‘Red flag’, ‘Natural healing’, ‘Imaging’, ‘Treatment strategies’, and ‘Pain physiology’ . Participants had to rate the extent to which each message increased their confidence using a 5-point Likert scale. Messages were categorized into four levels of perceived confidence based on participants’ responses: high (≥80% rated the message as ‘provide confidence’ or ‘significantly provide confidence’), moderate (60–79%), low (40–59%) and very low (≤40%). Correlation and non-parametric analyses examined the relationships between confidence ratings, demographic variables and personality traits. Results Messages that emphasized patient autonomy and the absence of red flags were perceived as particularly reassuring and received the highest ratings (≥80%). In contrast, messages that referred to natural healing and the neurophysiology of pain were perceived as less effective in providing confidence. Personality traits and background characteristics had minimal effects on perceived reassurance. Conclusions Reassuring communication that emphasizes patient autonomy and the low likelihood of serious pathology can boost confidence in individuals with LBP and may be more impactful than patient-specific characteristics. These findings may help PTs refine their communication strategies and strengthen therapeutic relationships, potentially leading to better treatment outcomes. Future research should explore the implications of these findings in clinical settings in real-life interactions.

Phytochemical and pharmacoinformatics analysis of a traditional antipsoriatic oil formulation for its potential against proinflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-17A
Psoriasis, a persistent inflammatory condition with a complex origin, lacks a definitive cure despite the availability of diverse treatments. Vetpalai thailam (VT), a Siddha formulation, is commonly used for addressing various skin ailments. Analysis via GC-MS of a sample of VT oil unveiled the existence of 65 compounds. These identified phytochemical structures were then examined through molecular docking against the proinflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-17A, resulting in the shortlisting of seven compounds. Among these, four displayed binding potential against TNF-α, while three exhibited similar potential against IL-17A. Further, the individual shortlisted phytochemical and protein complexes were subjected to molecular dynamics and documented their RMSDs, RMSFs, SASA, Rg, MMPBSA, and PCA profiles. Other informatics web tools were employed to predict physicochemical properties, bioactivity, drug-likeness, and toxicity scores. Three compounds identified from VT oil displayed binding potential against IL-17A, showcasing binding energies varied between −8.427 and −6.739 kcal/mol, while four compounds exhibited potential against TNF-α, with binding energies ranging from −9.873 to −8.644 kcal/mol. The physicochemical attributes, bioactivity, compliance with Lipinski’s rule of five, and ADMET profiles of the shortlisted compounds demonstrated favorable pharmacokinetic characteristics. Consequently, this research provides valuable insights into the binding ability of phytoconstituents of VT oil against IL-17A and TNF-α, paving the way for the development of novel drugs for the treatment of psoriasis.
Plants with higher dispersal capabilities follow ‘abundant-centre’ distributions but such patterns remain rare in animals
Abstract The ‘abundant-centre’ hypothesis posits that a species’ abundance is highest at its range centre and declines towards its range edge. Recently, the hypothesis has been much debated, with supporting empirical evidence remaining limited. Here, we test the hypothesis on 3660 species using 5,703,589 abundance observations. We summarise species-level patterns and test the effects of dispersal-related species traits and phylogeny on abundance–distance relationships. Support for the hypothesis is dependent on taxonomic group, with abundant-centre patterns being more pronounced for plants but non-significant when summarised across all animals. Dispersal capability does not explain abundance–distance relationships in animals but likely explains abundance patterns in non-woody plants. Phylogeny improves models of abundance–distance patterns for plants but not for animals. Despite this, controlling for phylogeny yields non-significant group-level results for plants, suggesting that only certain, phylogenetically clustered plant groups may conform to abundant-centre patterns. Overall, we demonstrate that abundant-centre patterns are not a general ecological phenomenon; they tend to not apply to animals but can manifest in certain plant groups, depending on dispersal capabilities and evolutionary histories. Leveraging species’ traits that account for dispersal improves models of abundant-centre patterns across geographic space.

Enhancing glioma immunohistochemical image classification through color deconvolution-aware prior guidance
Glioma diagnosis and prognosis heavily rely on immunohistochemistry (IHC), particularly CD34-stained images which highlight tumor vascular endothelial cells. However, traditional image analysis methods struggle with complex staining patterns and subtle morphological variations across glioma subtypes. In this study, we propose a novel Prior-Guided Enhancement Network (PGE-Net) that integrates domain-specific prior knowledge through color deconvolution to enhance feature representation of CD34-positive regions. Unlike existing approaches that treat all pixels equally, our model leverages color abnormality maps to emphasize diagnostically relevant staining patterns, thereby improving both interpretability and classification performance. Experimental evaluation on a curated glioma CD34 dataset demonstrates that PGE-Net achieves notable improvements over ResNet18 baselines, with Precision, Recall, and F1-score increased by 9.17%, 9.35%, and 12.35%, respectively. These results underscore the model’s potential for facilitating more accurate and interpretable IHC image analysis in clinical practice, ultimately supporting more personalized and efficient glioma treatment planning.
