Abstract This research paper presents an efficient data collection scheme for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) that simultaneously compresses and encrypts sensor data to extend network lifespan. To address WSN resource limitations, the scheme combines Compressive Sensing (CS) with Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) and Elliptic Curve Diffie–Hellman (ECDH) key exchange. Sensor data is securely compressed and encrypted using ECC-based public key mechanisms, mitigating CS-related attacks during aggregation and transmission. The measurement matrix seed serves as a private key that is exchangeed between sensor nodes and the base station, enhancing both security and efficiency. A prime-number-based Tree Path Identifier (TPID) routing and Cluster Head (CH) selection strategy is employed to optimize communication. Seven CS algorithms—including Orthogonal Matching Pursuit (OMP), Binary Compressive Sensing (BCS), Subspace Pursuits (SP), Approximate Message Passing (AMP), Split Bregman Iterative (SBI), Basis Pursuit (BP) and Compressive Sampling Matching Pursuit (CoSaMP) algorithms—are evaluated across various data sparsity levels. Results show that SP, AMP, and SBI algorithms outperform others in preserving energy, extending network life, and delaying the First Dead Node (FDN) appearance. Performance metrics include residual energy, network lifetime, total energy dissipation, and throughput. Energy savings confirm the superiority of the proposed hybrid scheme over traditional CS algorithms.

Modulation of sepsis by Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus and the potential role of short-chain fatty acid levels in feces and blood

Abstract The efficacy of probiotics for sepsis attenuation might be associated with the alteration of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). We investigated the impact of probiotics with the different production of SCFAs in vitro, including Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus strains fa1 and fg2 in mice with cecal ligation and puncture. Administration of either fa1 or fg2 probiotics, but not the heat-killed probiotics, prior to surgery effectively reduced sepsis severity. Metabolome analysis revealed elevated levels of acetate and 3-hydroxybutyrate in blood, whereas butyrate and propionate levels were diminished in the feces of sepsis mice compared to sham controls. Both probiotics similarly attenuated sepsis-induced gut dysbiosis, as indicated by the normalized Firmicutes and reduced Proteobacteria (fecal microbiome analysis), with the similar levels of fecal SCFAs. In parallel, the administration of butyrate, but not acetate, partly attenuated sepsis severity (gut permeability and serum TNF-α). Conditioned media from both probiotic strains or butyrate demonstrated a protective effect against enterocyte injury following activation by Klebsiella pneumoniae lysate, irrespective of their SCFAs production. To support the possible use of SCFAs in sepsis, the lower serum SCFAs in patients with sepsis compared to healthy controls was demonstrated. In conclusion, both fa1 and fg2 attenuated sepsis severity, partly through the increased levels of SCFAs. These findings endorse the potential of probiotics in preventing sepsis and the use of SCFAs for sepsis disease monitoring.

Abstract Chelonid exploitation – including tortoises and freshwater turtles – has been increasingly recognised as a significant element of Palaeolithic subsistence in the Mediterranean and Iberian Peninsula. This study offers an experimental assessment of fire’s role in processing these reptiles, contrasting raw and roasted specimens to evaluate impacts on butchery efficiency, surface modifications, skeletal representation and lithic use-wear. The roasting process markedly reduced disarticulation effort and time, irrespective of the operator’s experience. Cut marks and percussion traces were more frequent in raw-processed individuals, while burnt specimens displayed extensive thermal damage, particularly on carapace plates. However, Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) revealed limited diagnostic potential for low-intensity thermal exposure. Conversely, lithic tools used in processing exhibited macroscopic edge damage and minor polishes, paralleling wear patterns documented in the butchery of other small fauna. These results align with archaeological evidence from multiple Iberian and Mediterranean sites, suggesting a culturally structured practice of in-shell roasting and anatomical disarticulation. The finds highlight fire’s role in labour optimisation and knowledge transmission, supporting broader discussions on small game exploitation and cognitive planning in early human behaviour.
