Scientific Reports Paulina Šiurytė, Robert van de Velde, Jasper van Leeuwen et al. Dec 24, 2025 DOI: 10.1038/s41598-025-32636-0

Abstract Inhomogeneity of the transmitted radiofrequency field ( $$B_1^+$$ ) is a major factor hindering the image quality in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) at high field strengths. Here, a novel approach is presented, to locally modulate the $$B_1^+$$ utilizing an array of high permittivity materials with switchable connections. A 3 $$\times$$ 3 array of barium titanate suspension elements was constructed, with two PIN diode-based switchable connectors per element. Electromagnetic simulations were performed to determine configurations that produce strong $$B_1^+$$ modulation. Remote $$B_1^+$$ field switching was tested in a disk- and a torso-shaped phantom at 3T by applying different bias voltages to the PIN diodes. The attained $$B_1^+$$ modulation was assessed at various switching pattern positions and various depths within the phantoms. The configuration with the strongest effect size has produced up to 11 $$\%$$ modulation in simulations at 15 mm depth, with excellent translation properties. The effects were successfully replicated in phantoms, with a 5 V bias voltage producing up to 11.6±0.2 $$\%$$ modulation. At the relative depth of the human heart, up to 6 $$\%$$ of modulation was observed in the torso phantom. The presented method may provide a promising direction for cost-effective, and adaptive $$B_1^+$$ shimming without changes to the scanner hardware.

Shikonin inhibits multiple tumor malignant phenotypes and is associated with Hedgehog pathway downregulation in lung adenocarcinoma

Scientific Reports Hong-Gang Wang, Ming-Xia Lu, Mei-Ling Sheng et al. Dec 24, 2025 DOI: 10.1038/s41598-025-28080-9

Abstract Shikonin (SH) is a natural component extracted from Lithospermum erythrorhizon Siebold & Zucc, a traditional Chinese medicine, which has been shown to have anti-tumor effects in recent years. However, the specific mechanism behind these effects has not yet been reported. Thus, it is important to clarify the specific anti-tumor mechanism of SH and then develop it as a new anti-tumor drug. The objective of this study was to investigate the anti-tumor effect of SH on lung adenocarcinoma and its associated mechanism. SH was co-cultured with A549 cells, and the effects of SH on tumor-related phenotypes were evaluated via methods such as CCK-8, transwell, and TUNEL assays. Transcriptomics was performed to investigate the expression profile of SH-regulated genes as well as the signaling pathways involved. Moreover, the anti-tumor effect of SH was verified using a mouse lung cancer xenograft model. SH inhibited the proliferation, metastasis, and invasion of A549 cells, promoted apoptosis, and regulated the expression of malignant phenotype-related markers. The transcriptomic analysis indicated that SH regulated the expression of various malignant phenotype-related mRNAs and inhibited the Hedgehog pathway activation. Furthermore, SH improved the general state of lung cancer-bearing mice, suppressed the growth of transplanted tumors, and inhibited the expression of tumor markers. The findings of this study are the first to reveal the anti-lung adenocarcinoma effect of SH from multiple perspectives—namely, increasing cancer cell apoptosis and suppressing cancer cell proliferation, metastasis, and invasion by inhibiting the Hedgehog pathway activation.

In silico study of the sensing properties of C18, B9N9, and Al9N9 nanorings for diabetes monitoring via indole detection in exhaled breath

Scientific Reports Abdulwahab Alamri, Ahmed Alafnan Dec 24, 2025 DOI: 10.1038/s41598-025-33074-8

Abstract Detecting indole in exhaled breath has immense promise for non-invasive diabetes monitoring. Here, we pursued a computational evaluation of the performance of C 18 , B 9 N 9 , and Al 9 N 9 nanoring structures as sensors for indole. The evaluated processes included Density Functional Theory calculations, Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules analysis, Non-Covalent Interaction studies, and UV–Vis spectral analysis, to interpret electronic interactions and adsorption between indole and sensors. The findings suggested that B9N9 showed the most significant interaction with indole, with the highest adsorption energy (− 20.71 kcal/mol) and longest recovery time (1.54 × 10 3  s), indicating its superior sensitivity. Al 9 N 9 performed moderately, while C18 had the lowest interaction with indole. Furthermore, B 9 N 9 showed a significant increase in electrical conductivity (2.81 × 10 9 –2.88 × 10 9 S/m), making it an attractive candidate for electrochemical sensors. In the UV–Vis spectra, Al 9 N 9 @Indole showed a significant red shift of 87 nm, going from 376 to 463 nm. This change shifts it from the UV range into the visible spectrum, enabling a noticeable color change. Therefore, B 9 N 9 is well-suited for electrochemical sensing due to its high sensitivity and fast response. Al 9 N 9 is notable for its visible optical response, which makes it suitable for colorimetric sensing when indole is present.

Dysfunctional personality traits and body image in orthopedic surgery patients at risk of postoperative psychological distress

Scientific Reports Katarzyna Brzezewska, Wiktoria Walenista, Jolanta Starosta et al. Dec 24, 2025 DOI: 10.1038/s41598-025-28409-4

Abstract Orthopedic surgery disrupts body integrity and often results in pain, reduced mobility, and temporary loss of autonomy, potentially triggering psychological distress and altered body image. Despite growing interest in postoperative psychological outcomes, the role of dysfunctional personality traits in shaping body image remains underexplored. This exploratory, cross-sectional observational study aimed to examine whether specific dysfunctional personality traits are associated with distinct aspects of body image in 53 adult orthopedic surgery patients assessed within 72 h post-surgery in a Polish hospital. The Personality Inventory for ICD-11 and the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire were used. Progressive stepwise regression analysis showed that dissociality was positively associated with appearance evaluation (β = 0.38, p  < 0.01, R² = 0.13) and fitness evaluation (β = 0.36, p  < 0.01, R² = 0.11). Negative affectivity was negatively associated with health evaluation (β = − 0.35, p  < 0.05, R² = 0.08) and positively associated with weight evaluation (β = 0.40, p  < 0.05, R² = 0.09). Anankastia was positively related to health orientation (β = 0.29, p  < 0.05, R² = 0.07) and illness orientation (β = 0.31, p  < 0.05, R² = 0.06). These findings suggest that dysfunctional personality traits are differentially related to body image dimensions shortly after surgery. Early personality screening may help identify patients at risk for body image disturbances and support the implementation of targeted psychological interventions, such as psychoeducational programs, to enhance emotional adjustment and, if confirmed in future research, optimize recovery outcomes.

Multifactor analysis and dominant factor identification for coal seam gas drainage borehole instability

Scientific Reports Wenyuan Wang, Wei Yang, Zhichao Zhang et al. Dec 24, 2025 DOI: 10.1038/s41598-025-32455-3

Abstract To reveal the main controlling factors of instability in gas drainage boreholes in coal seams, this study investigated the main controlling factors of instability in coal seam gas drainage boreholes through Thermo-hydro-mechanical coupled triaxial tests, acoustic emission monitoring, and FLAC 3D simulations. Experimental results demonstrate: (1) Increasing confining pressure significantly enhances coal sample parameters including peak strength (76.1% increase), peak strain (74.4% increase), and elastic modulus (28.1% improvement), while elevated gas pressure reduces peak strength by 22.6% and weakens elastic modulus by 32.0%. Temperature rise induces 37.1% and 42.4% reductions in peak strength and strain respectively. (2) Acoustic emission energy evolution exhibits a "slow-accelerated" two-stage characteristic, with initial energy mutation point stress increasing with confining pressure (36.8–52.8 MPa) but decreasing with gas pressure and temperature elevation. Numerical simulations indicate PP screen pipe support effectively restrains borehole surrounding rock deformation (84.5% vertical displacement reduction) and optimizes stress distribution (35.1% peak stress position reduction), with its synergistic bearing effect increasing coal mass peak stress by 27.19%. Response surface models confirm confining pressure exerts the most significant impact on stability (P < 0.0001), followed by gas pressure and temperature, providing theoretical and technical support for preventing instability in deep coal seam gas extraction boreholes.
