Resting-state brain function and its modulation by intranasal oxytocin in antisocial personality disorder with and without psychopathy

Abstract Behavioural, structural, and functional neuroimaging differences exist between individuals with antisocial personality disorder with (ASPD + P) or without psychopathy (ASPD-P). However, the aetiological mechanisms underpinning such differences remain unclear, hindering treatment development. Intranasal oxytocin (OT) has shown modulatory effects on social brain function in healthy and antisocial populations. We investigated the effects of OT on resting-state brain function in individuals with violent offending histories with ASPD+/-P using arterial spin labelling to measure regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF). A double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover design was employed with males with ASPD (ASPD + P: N  = 17, ASPD-P: N  = 14) and healthy male non-offenders ( N  = 22). Both ASPD subtypes exhibited reduced rCBF in frontotemporal regions compared to non-offenders. Individuals with ASPD + P showed significantly greater rCBF increases in posterior default mode network regions compared to individuals with ASPD-P. OT administration selectively decreased rCBF in the left basal ganglia of the ASPD-P group, an effect not observed in ASPD + P or non-offender groups. These findings highlight functional brain differences between individuals with ASPD + P and ASPD-P at rest and demonstrate oxytocin’s differential impact on resting-state measures. Further understanding of the origins of these neurobiological differences could inform targeted therapeutic strategies for individuals with ASPD with and without psychopathy.

Fractal nature of galaxy clustering in the updated CfA redshift catalog

Abstract We have recently argued that the expansion of the Universe is compatible not only with standard homogeneity, but also with fractal homogeneity in a hierarchical fractal cosmology. In this work we further test this paradigm using the galactic distances obtained from the Updated CfA Redshift Catalogs. We confirm that the observed multifractal spectrum is consistent with the weighted Cantor set models characteristic of turbulence in space magnetized plasmas such as the solar wind in heliosphere, the very local interstellar medium and even in laboratory experiments. The degree of multifractality is smaller than that found inside the heliosphere and shows some variations between nearby and more distant galaxies, which may be related to the presence of voids in the large-scale matter distribution. A possible asymmetry in the spectrum may be attributed to some deviations from the Hubble’s law for an ideal uniform expansion. Overall, the deviations from homogeneity revealed by multifractal analysis should be broadly consistent with $$\Lambda$$ CDM large-scale structure formation.

Abstract In Europe, Maedi-Visna disease has high prevalence rates at the individual and flock levels, respectively, and is regarded as one of the most significant infectious disease in sheep. The lack of treatment or a commercial vaccine underscores the need for accurate and reliable diagnostic tools to support control programs. Conventional methods, including ELISA and qPCR, provide useful but incomplete information due to the genetic variability of small ruminant lentiviruses (SRLVs) and the heterogeneous host immune response. In this work, third-generation sequencing was assessed as a diagnostic strategy, focusing on Oxford Nanopore Technologies amplicon sequencing of different regions of the virus genome. DNA from whole blood, PBMCs, semen, and nasal mucosa of 44 rams previously tested for Maedi-Visna virus by ELISA was used to generate amplicons of the gag , pol , and p25 genes. Sequencing showed that blood DNA was the most reliable source for SRLVs detection by Nanopore, despite the low proportion of monocytes present in this medium. Compared with conventional approaches, Nanopore sequencing reduced the proportion of false negatives observed with ELISA (42%) and qPCR (77%). These results highlight Nanopore amplicon sequencing as a promising diagnostic alternative, combining epidemiological relevance with technological innovation to enhance SRLVs detection and strengthen control strategies for sustainable disease management.
