Abstract This paper proposes a low-complexity, fast sensorless collision detection method for permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) based on a forgetting-factor recursive least-squares (FFRLS) estimator. The method estimates the load torque from the motor motion equations and detects collisions by monitoring abrupt changes in a processed load-torque metric. The algorithm is tailored for resource-constrained embedded controllers: it avoids high-order matrix operations and the use of external sensors while achieving rapid detection. Experimental results under constant speed, acceleration, and time-varying load conditions demonstrate fast and repeatable detection performance. The approach provides a practical trade-off between computational cost and detection reliability for embedded motor drives.

Stretch-mediated hypertrophy and strength increases and their impact on dynamic balance performance - a randomized controlled intervention study
Abstract Optimizing morphological and functional muscle parameters is of crucial importance in sports and rehabilitation. While resistance training is the most common intervention when improving muscle strength as well as general motor function such as balance, this option is not always applicable, calling for sufficient alternatives. One such opportunity is high-volume, high-intensity stretching. While previous research focused on lower leg muscles, this is the first study exploring effects on the quadriceps. Forty-nine recreationally active participants were allocated into a control group and an intervention group, which underwent twelve sessions of 15-min unilateral supervised hip flexor stretch for both legs over 4–5 weeks. Measurements included muscle thickness, isometric leg extension strength, and dynamic balance. Regional stretch-mediated ultrasound muscle thickness increased significantly in the rectus femoris (proximal: η p ²=0.24–0.41, p = 0.002-<0.001; distal: η p ²=0.14–0.40, p = 0.001-<0.001), but showed inconsistent effects in the vastus lateralis (η p ²=0.18, p = 0.008 only in the left leg). Isometric strength effects were significant in 70° (shortened position, right leg: η p ²=0.09, p = 0.04; left leg: η p ²=0.21, p = 0.001), but not at 110° (lengthened position) knee angle. Balance performance improved significantly leg-dependent in anterior (η p ²=0.13, p = 0.02, left leg), posterolateral (η p ²=0.14, p = 0.009, left leg) and posteromedial directions (η p ²=0.13, p = 0.02, right leg). This study provides first results on stretch-mediated muscle thickness and strength increases in the quadriceps with the potential for implementation in balance training, if participation in an active, supervised training program is not feasible. Moisture-tolerant Mg-metal electrodes for practical fabrication of rechargeable Mg batteries
Abstract Despite striking advantages in terms of cost and safety, penetration of rechargeable Mg batteries into the commercial market is still hampered by major technical challenges, including intrinsic hypersensitivity of Mg metal to moisture, which readily forms a compact ion-insulating film on the surface. To unlock this critical constraint, a moisture-tolerant Mg electrode is developed that is capable of efficient Mg plating-stripping even in the highly moist electrolytes. Here we show that short immersion of Mg metal in trimethyl phosphate creates a sacrificial protection layer containing dimethyl magnesium in magnesium dimethyl phosphate, which synergistically scavenges water molecules from the electrolytes instantly, enabling manufacturing of Mg-ion cells under moist and/or atmospheric conditions. This simple and scalable strategy provides a practical route to reducing the manufacturing costs of rechargeable Mg batteries, thereby expediting their early commercialization.
Politics matter more than credentials in laypeople’s judgments of expertise
Abstract We explored the cues laypeople use to determine who is an expert on a given topic. In Study 1 ( n = 208), we collected participants’ self-reports of cues they consider important when evaluating a putative expert. Across various topics, participants rated good cues (e.g., relevant degree, more experience) as more important for expertise while disregarding poor or superficial cues (e.g., appearance). In Study 2 ( n = 498), we conducted a conjoint experiment where we manipulated several cues of expertise in biographies of hypothetical experts. In line with the self-reports, good cues had the strongest effects on trust. In Study 3 ( n = 1,776), we examined whether participants would still recognize good cues when they received information about the expert’s political views. Using a highly politicized topic—abortion—we manipulated the expert’s views along with their credentials. Participants trusted likeminded experts more, and the effect of the expert’s views on participants’ trust was more than twice as large as the effect of credentials. Our results paint a complicated picture, where laypeople know what qualities to look for in experts but attend to political information more readily than to good cues of expertise.
