Dynamic domain learning ability enhanced knowledge tracing with stability

Abstract Knowledge Tracing (KT) aims to dynamically model a student’s knowledge state to predict future learning performance. However, most existing approaches have two main limitations. On the one hand, they fail to capture the gradual evolution of knowledge over time, overlooking the stable nature of the learning process. As a result, their predictions often show significant temporal fluctuations. On the other hand, they ignore individual differences in students’ abilities across different tasks within the same domain, typically modeling ability as a single, static level, which limits the accuracy of personalized predictions. To address these issues, this research proposes Dynamic Domain Learning Ability Enhanced Knowledge Tracing with Stability (DLAKT). Firstly, unlike previous knowledge tracing methods that primarily rely on knowledge mastery, DLAKT is the first to explicitly incorporate domain learning ability into the KT framework. This design addresses the limitation that knowledge states alone cannot fully capture individual differences. By establishing a clear mapping between skills and multiple ability dimensions, DLAKT constructs an interpretable representation of domain learning ability. The model dynamically adjusts the ability improvement rate according to the student’s knowledge state, response time, and item difficulty, enabling personalized modeling of evolving abilities. Secondly, DLAKT explicitly models knowledge forgetting and accumulation based on memory networks by incorporating multiple learning behavior features, thereby more accurately simulating the learning dynamics. It further introduces a Transformer-based smoothing module to reduce fluctuations in the knowledge state and enhance model stability. Finally, through the joint modeling of knowledge evolution and the dynamic update of domain learning ability, DLAKT achieves more accurate and stable predictions of student performance. Experiments on three real-world educational datasets show that DLAKT consistently outperforms existing mainstream models in prediction accuracy.

Abstract Remembering emotionally significant events is critical for the organisms’ behavior and survival. While the mechanisms underlying the formation of such memories are well understood and closely linked to the vagus nerve and the brain’s arousal system, less is known about its contribution to memory retrieval. The current study tested whether non-invasive transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) applied during a long-term recognition memory task influenced retrieval of unpleasant and neutral scenes that had been incidentally encoded one week earlier. Results showed that taVNS, compared to a sham condition, selectively enhanced the recollection of unpleasant images. Despite a modest effect size ( d  =  0.33 ), these findings provide initial human support suggesting a role of the vagus nerve in emotional memory retrieval, thus extending current theoretical models of emotional memory retrieval and opening a new pathway for memory modulation and non-invasive therapeutic interventions.

mRNA sequencing revealed transcriptional variability of terpene and eugenol synthase genes among distinct oil yielding accessions of Ocimum sanctum L.

Abstract Ocimum sanctum one of the important medicinal plants, lacking adequate molecular resources. In this study, whole mRNA sequencing was carried out towards development of molecular resources, especially correlating with terpenoid biosynthesis and expression of such genes in high and low oil yielding accessions of O. sanctum . The transcriptome sequencing resulted 333.91 and 373.10 million high-quality reads in OS1 and OS38 respectively. In OS1 out of 31,820 transcripts, 30,217 transcripts were annotated and in OS38 out of 32,564 transcripts total 30546 transcripts were annotated. KEGG pathway analysis identified 25,643 transcripts in OS1 and 26,382 in OS38. GO and KEGG annotations enabled the identification of trait-specific genes, including those involved in terpenoid biosynthesis. These findings were supported by GC–MS analysis, which showed the presence of 33 terpenoid compounds in the essential oils. Further, relative expression analysis of six genes responsible for terpenoid and eugenol biosynthesis were performed using RT-PCR to confirm transcript presence. Germacrene A Synthase in OS1 and 3 S Linalool Synthase in OS38 showed higher expression as compared to other genes. RT-PCR results were interpreted as qualitative expressions. These results provide scientific insights into transcript diversity of terpenoid biosynthesis and serve as a basis for future genetic improvement of O. sanctum .

Free water, occipital volume and changes in depressive symptoms in the LifeAfter90 study

Abstract Though depression impacts over 10% of the oldest-old, the contribution of brain health on changes in depression is unknown. This study included 225 participants from LifeAfter90 with magnetic resonance imaging, amyloid positron emission tomography (PET), and repeated Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) data. We fit linear mixed-effects models for associations of neuroimaging markers with depressive symptom change adjusted for age, gender, race and ethnicity, and education. At baseline, average GDS scores were 2.6 (SD = 2.3) out of 15 possible points, average age was 93.3 (SD = 2.3) years, 56% female, and 22% Black, 25% Asian, 18% Hispanic/Latino, 28% Non-Hispanic White, and 7% as Multiracial/other. Greater baseline occipital volume was associated with slower GDS increase (β = − 0.29; 95% CI − 0.54, − 0.05). Greater baseline free water was associated with faster GDS increase (β = 0.31; 95% CI 0.05, 0.57). Estimates for other neuroimaging biomarkers leaned towards slower, but non-significant, increases in GDS. Estimates were not in the expected direction for amyloid PET and null for frontal cortex volume. Our findings suggest that lower cortical volume and greater white matter injury is associated with increases in depressive symptoms among the oldest old, even for those with low levels of baseline depressive symptoms.

Abstract Water is an indispensable resource essential for sustaining life on Earth. Sustainable access to safe drinking and utility water is essential for human survival. Considering the potential of water on the earth and the rapid increase in the population, saving the existing potential water gains importance. The behavior of consumers in saving water has the same level of importance all over the world. The tendency of the public regarding the way of water use and consumption can be found by various methods. In order to determine this tendency in Isparta city center, a survey study was conducted on the subject. The subjects were randomly selected in Isparta. Participants were asked 23 questions to determine their water use and consumption patterns, and statistical methods were used to analyze the answers obtained from the questionnaire. The results obtained are presented in tables and graphs.
