How stakeholder requirements constrain drone-based medical delivery: probabilistic sizing of eVTOL aircraft at high altitude
Abstract Drone-based medical delivery can overcome geographic barriers to healthcare in highland regions, but designing aircraft for this mission requires navigating uncertainty that originates outside engineering: physicians define cold-chain requirements, regulators mandate safety systems, and health planners set delivery speed targets, each imposing design penalties whose magnitudes are uncertain. No existing aircraft sizing framework propagates this requirement-origin uncertainty alongside classical technological uncertainty. Here we introduce Requirement Impact Kits (RIKs)—composable modules with uncertain engineering coefficients—within a three-level probabilistic framework that distinguishes requirement-scenario, engineering-translation, and parameter-level uncertainty. Applied to eVTOL medical delivery at 2,800 m altitude in the Quito Metropolitan District, comparing Lift+Cruise, Tilt-Rotor, and Multirotor architectures, the framework reveals that stakeholder decisions dominate the design space: demanding urgent delivery reduces aircraft feasibility by 24 percentage points—four times the impact of adding cold-chain thermal management. Sobol sensitivity decomposition shows that 98% of parameter-level variance is epistemic and reducible through rotor testing, while battery energy density contributes less than 2%. The Lift+Cruise architecture achieves the highest robustness, and an altitude–cruise speed feasibility map provides health system planners with a quantitative tool for negotiating delivery time requirements against operational reliability.

Excess copper causes repression of global translation in Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Abstract Copper is an essential cofactor for numerous metabolic pathways; however, excess intracellular copper is cytotoxic. In this study, we investigated the consequences of deregulated Cu + uptake mediated by the high-affinity copper transporter Ctr1 in the model yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae . Constitutive expression of a carboxy-terminally truncated Ctr1 variant, CTR1(300) , resulted in elevated intracellular copper levels, increased oxidative stress, and reduced oxygen consumption, likely due to impairment of iron-sulfur cluster-containing proteins. Notably, CTR1(300) -expressing cells exhibited a pronounced repression of global protein synthesis at very low copper concentrations, a phenotype that was recapitulated in wild-type cells when exposed to higher copper levels. These findings reveal that excessive Cu + accumulation negatively impacts cellular respiration and translation, identifying protein synthesis as a sensitive target of copper toxicity.
Authors’ academic but not personal expertise or gender affect message credibility in science communication
Abstract Evaluating message credibility is critical for understanding scientific information and informed decision making. People’s ability to assess the credibility of science communication texts is influenced by several factors. In three experiments, we examined the impact of authors’ gender as well as different types of expertise on readers’ credibility perceptions. In Experiment 1 (n = 203), we varied authors’ alleged gender and expertise. We found that a text allegedly written by a high-expertise author was rated as more credible than the same text by a low-expertise author. There was no effect of authors’ gender. Experiment 2 (n = 182) was a replication of the first study with a different sample. We did not find any effects of gender or expertise on perceived message credibility. In Experiment 3 (n = 206), we differentiated between academic and personal expertise and manipulated these types of expertise independently. The data indicated that academic expertise was a significant positive predictor of perceived message credibility, while personal expertise was not. We discuss these findings in terms of their significance for the trustworthiness of science communication and examine the relevance of differentiating the concept of expertise in this context.
