Abstract Adding organic amendments to agricultural systems as sustainable practices is one of the most important stages toward creating a more sustainable and environmentally friendly food system. By increasing soil fertility and nutritional content, organic fertilizers increase plant productivity. Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) is a vital indicator of soil fertility and plant nutrient availability, which is considered one of the most significant chemical parameters that affect agricultural soil quality. The main goals of the present study were to generate protein lysate from discarded feathers (enriched in different amino acids) through solid-state fermentation using Box-Behnken design (BBD). Then, assess the efficacy of hydrolyzed feather product (as an organic amendment), time, and N-P fertilizers on soil-CEC planted with maize in calcareous soil utilizing an optimization strategy that employed the central composite design and the response surface methodology (RSM). The results revealed that the protein concentration in the customized conditions was 1173.53 µg ml−1. With a predicted CEC of 31.416 cmolc kg−1, the ideal circumstances for the three variables under investigation of feather hydrolysate, time, and chemical fertilizer were 20.147 ml kg−1 soil, 27 days, and 42.3% of the recommended dose, respectively. Using keratin hydrolysate (20 ml kg−1 soil) as a soil amendment significantly improved the growth parameters of maize. The leaf surface area (SA, m2 gm−1) was increased by 695% and 37% compared to the control (without any addition) and N-P fertilizer treatments (100% of the recommended dose), respectively. Keratin hydrolysate as a sustainable production of value-added organic fertilizer applied to calcareous soil shows a synergistic effect on soil-CEC and plant growth parameters.

Effect of rhGH treatment on lipidome and brown fat activity in prepuberal small for gestational age children: a pilot study

Abstract Recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) therapy is the primary treatment for children born small for gestational age (SGA) who fail to show spontaneous catch-up growth by two or four years. While its effects on white adipose tissue are well-documented, this pilot study aimed to investigate its impact on the lipidome and the thermogenic and endocrine activities of brown adipose tissue (BAT) in SGA children following rhGH treatment. The study involved 11 SGA children divided into two groups: (a) SGA children who were not treated with rhGH (n = 4) and (b) SGA children who received rhGH treatment with Saizen® (n = 7). This second group of seven SGA children was followed for 12 months after initiating rhGH treatment. Interventions included 12-hour fasting blood extraction and infrared thermography at baseline and 3 and 12 months post-treatment. Five appropriate-for-gestational-age (AGA) children served as controls. Exclusion criteria included endocrinological, genetic, or chronic diseases. Untargeted lipidomics analysis was performed using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), and serum biomarker levels were measured using ELISA assays. Serum lipidomic analysis revealed that free fatty acids (FFAs) increased to levels close to those of the AGA group after three months of rhGH administration, including polyunsaturated fatty acids, correlating with reduced leptin levels. Elevated levels of 1a,1b-dihomo-PGJ2 and adrenic acid suggested potential aging markers. rhGH treatment also significantly reduced meteorin-like (METRNL) and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP1) serum levels to control levels. rhGH influences the serum lipidome, promoting changes in maturation and metabolism. Further research is required to clarify the direct effects of rhGH on specific lipid species and batokines, potentially addressing metabolic disturbances linked to obesity and aging.

Tunnel face stability in strata rich in water with soft upper and hard lower layers

Abstract When a shield tunnel is excavated in water-rich strata with soft upper and hard lower layers, the failure mode of the tunnel face may shift from an overall failure mode to a partial failure mode. To address this issue, three-dimensional discrete failure mechanisms for both partial and overall failure modes are established on the basis of the upper bound theorem and spatial discretization techniques. The influence of pore water pressure is also considered, leading to the development of a method for calculating the critical support force of tunnel faces in such strata, while taking into account both failure modes and the effects of groundwater. Through parameter analysis, factors such as the tunnel diameter, proportion of soft soil, stratum cohesion, and pore water pressure coefficient significantly influence the tunnel face failure mode. A comprehensive critical support force, which takes both partial and overall failure modes into account, is proposed. The parameter analysis reveals that this comprehensive critical support force exhibits complex variations under the influence of multiple parameters. At the same time, a method is proposed to determine the upper and lower bounds of the ultimate support force, based on the calculation results under no seepage and free seepage conditions at the excavation face. The entire method provides a valuable reference for the stability analysis of tunnel faces in water-rich strata with soft upper and hard lower layers.

Abstract Our retrospective single-center study aims to evaluate the impact of structured reporting (SR) using a self-developed template on report quality compared to free-text reporting (FTR) in [18F]SiTATE Positron Emission Tomography/Computer Tomography (PET/CT) for the primary staging and therapy monitoring of patients diagnosed with neuroendocrine tumors (NET). In total 50 patients were included. FTRs and SRs were generated post-examination. All reports were evaluated by a radiologist and a surgeon through a questionnaire to determine their contribution to facilitating clinical decision-making and to assess their completeness, linguistic quality, and overall quality. SR significantly increased the capacity of facilitating therapy decision-making from 32% in FTR to 55% in SR (p < 0.001). Trust in the report was significantly higher in SR with a mean of 5.0 (SD = 0.5) vs. 4.7 (SD = 0.5) for FTR (p < 0.001). SR received significantly higher mean ratings regarding linguistic quality with 4.7 for SR vs. 4.4 for FTR (p = 0.004) and overall report quality with a mean of 4.9 for SR vs. 4.6 for FTR (p < 0.001). Concluding that SR enhances the overall quality of reports in [18F]SiTATE-PET/CTs for NET staging, serving as a tool to streamline clinical decision-making and enhance interdisciplinary communication in the future.
