About this Journal
Travel Literature Studies is an interdisciplinary field examining writings born from journeys—from ancient pilgrimages and Grand Tour diaries to modern road narratives and digital travel blogs. It explores how travel texts construct cultural encounters, shape identities, and mediate between self and other. Scholars analyze the genre’s conventions: the tension between fact and fiction, the traveler’s authority, and the politics of representation, especially in colonial and postcolonial contexts. The field draws on literary theory, history, geography, and anthropology to ask how movement produces meaning. Key concerns include the gaze, displacement, nostalgia, and the ethics of describing foreign worlds. It also studies imagined and virtual travel, migration narratives, and travel’s environmental dimensions. Rather than a fixed canon, Travel Literature Studies treats mobility as a lens for understanding knowledge, power, and cross-cultural exchange.
