A discrete choice experiment with health professions trainees to improve the urban-rural health care access disparity in Appalachia: Study protocol
Globally, those who live in rural areas experience significant barriers to accessing health care due to a maldistribution of health care providers. Those who live in rural areas in the Appalachian region of the United States face one of the worst shortages of health care providers despite experiencing more complex health needs compared to Americans in more affluent, urban areas. Prior research has failed to identify effective solutions to narrow the provider maldistribution, despite it being a policy focus for decades. More work is needed to better understand the complex, multidimensional process in which health care providers select jobs and how job, community, and providers’ intrapersonal characteristics influence job selection. This paper is a protocol for a study aimed at identifying effective policies and incentives to improve recruitment of healthcare providers for their first job in rural Appalachia. We will use rigorous, theoretically grounded discrete choice experiment methodology (DCE) to accomplish the study’s objective. The main outcome will be the relative importance of alternative community and job characteristics for trainees’ choices of jobs in rural Appalachia. secondary outcomes of interest will be trade-offs that these trainees make when selecting a job, described in the form of marginal rates of substitution (mRS). Participants include medical residents and fellows, PA students and NP students in their final year of training. The choice context will be the recruitment of these trainees for their first job. Data will be analyzed using mixed logit analysis. Results from this DCE will improve our understanding of the job selection process for health care providers. The identification and prioritization of predictors of trainees’ rural job choices will allow for the development of policies and incentives that will enable policymakers and health care systems to recruit more providers to rural and underserved areas.
Enhancing covert communication in NOMA systems with joint security and covert design
The explosion of Internet-of-Thing enables several interconnected devices but also gives rise chance for unauthorized parties to compromise sensitive information through wireless communication systems. Covert communication therefore has emerged as a potential candidate for ensuring data privacy in conjunction with physical layer transmission to render two lines of defense. In this paper, we aim to enhance the individual transmission of nearby users in non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems under scenarios of an eavesdropper who monitors covert transmission before decoding covert information. For this problem, we first provide a comprehensive analysis of the NOMA system in terms of outage probability (OP), secrecy outage probability (SOP), and detection error probability (DEP), where all of them are quantified in exact and asymptotic closed-form expressions. Besides, we have also derived closed-form formulas for users’ covert and public rates. Under the system requirements of the maximal OP and SOP and the minimal DEP, we formulate the optimization of resource power allocation to: 1) minimize the OP of covert communication and 2) maximize the covert rate. Thanks to the developed analytical expressions, we obtain closed-form expressions for the sub-optimal power allocation coefficient for each problem. Simulation results validate the efficacy of the analytical mathematical frameworks and reveal that the proposed approaches of power allocation can provide attractive performance improvement compared to fixed power allocations only.
Shaping sustainable perceptions: The role of metaphors in Olympic news discourse
The dissemination of sustainable development concepts in large international events like the Olympics has garnered great attention. As a major international sports event, the Beijing Winter Olympics served as an important platform for showcasing China’s sustainable development philosophy through its official news coverage. In this context, metaphor, as a powerful cognitive tool, plays a crucial role in shaping public perception and facilitating the dissemination of values by mapping concrete source domains onto abstract target domains. This paper constructs a critical metaphor analysis framework for sustainable development, analyzing the mechanisms by which metaphors map the concepts of social, economic, and ecological sustainability, and their multifaceted roles in conveying policy proposals, ideologies, cultural values, and social group behaviors. The findings indicate that metaphors effectively facilitate public understanding of sustainability by concretizing abstract concepts. In the social dimension, metaphors emphasize fairness, cultural diversity, and social solidarity; in the economic dimension, they highlight resource recycling, technological innovation, and industrial upgrading; while in the ecological dimension, the focus is on environmental protection and the harmonious coexistence of humanity and nature. Metaphors play a crucial role in shaping public perceptions of policy, reflecting specific values and socio-cultural contexts, facilitating cultural communication and understanding, and enhancing public responsibility and participation awareness.
Association between depression and the prevalence and prognosis of prediabetes: Data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2013–2018
Background Diagnosis and intervention of prediabetes is an emerging approach to preventing the progression and complications of diabetes. Inflammatory factors and dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis have been suggested as potential mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of both diabetes and depression. However, the relationship between depression levels and the prevalence of prediabetes and its prognosis remains elusive. This study aimed to explore the relationship between depression and the prevalence of prediabetes and to further explore the all-cause mortality of different levels of depression in patients with prediabetes. Methods Our study used a data set from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Participants were initially divided into two groups (depression vs. non-depression) and further stratified by different depression severity levels. We used a weighted multiple logistic regression model to analyze the association between depression and prediabetes prevalence and a Cox regression model to assess all-cause mortality in prediabetic patients. Results A total of 4384 participants were included, divided into depression group (n = 1379) and non-depression group (n = 3005). Results showed that people with depression were at higher risk of developing prediabetes. After adjusting for covariates, moderate to severe depression was positively associated with prediabetes (moderate to severe depression vs no depression: OR = 1.834, 95%CI: 0.713–4.721; severe depression vs no depression: OR = 1.004, 95% CI 0.429–2.351). In addition, we explored the relationship between all-cause mortality and depressive status in patients diagnosed with prediabetes (n = 2240) and found that moderate to severe depression (HR = 2.109, 95%CI 0.952–4.670) was associated with higher mortality in patients with prediabetes. Conclusions Overall, the findings consistently suggest that depression is positively associated with both the prevalence and mortality risk among individuals with prediabetes. This suggests that depression may be a new and valuable indicator of prediabetes risk. Early treatment of depression improves outcomes in prediabetes.
Fatty acid composition, total phenolic and total flavonoid contents, and antioxidant activity of Niger seed (Guizotia abyssinica) accessions collected from major producer areas of Ethiopia
Background Oils from various sources are vital nutritional components with a variety of roles in our body. Niger seed (Guzoita abyssinica) is endemic to Ethiopia and is among the major oil seed crops grown in the country. The fatty acid composition and the concentration of other bioactive phytochemicals in it vary with species type, geographical origin, cultivation season, and varietal types. The present work investigated the fatty acid profile and the total phenolic (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC) and antioxidant activity (AA) of Niger seed samples obtained from five different zones in the Amhara and Oromia regions of Ethiopia. using internationally accepted standard methods. Results In all the samples, its main unsaturated acids were linoleic acid, ranging between 67.30 and 74.67% with respect to the relative percentage comprising 179 to 234 mg/g in terms of concentration; oleic acid constitutes between 5.43 and 11.02% of the total fatty acid or 1.03 and 1.60 mg/g of dry matter. Among saturated acids, it was the most abundant palmitic acid, ranging between 10.32 and 10.66% of the entire fatty acids comprising 24.80 to 37.10 mg/g. Amongst the zones, the seed from Amhara region, specifically from North Gondar has been the richest regarding a total of 347.74 mg/g. In addition, the total phenolic content ranged between 10.89 and 11.78 mg GAE/g, whereas the content of total flavonoids ranged from 5.42 to 6.67 mg CE/g. Aqueous methanol (80%) extracted more phenolic content than absolute methanol. On a regional basis, the Amhara region, represented by the North Gondar and East Gojjam zones of the study area, had relatively higher TPC and TFC than other regions. The DPPH scavenging assay IC50 value (μg/mL) ranged between 133–188 μg/mL and poorly correlated with TPC. Conclusion Among the different fatty acids obtained, four of them, linoleic, oleic, palmitic, and stearic acids, are the major ones, followed by a significant amount of phenolic compounds irrespective of the variety of the studied samples and sampling of locations. The study also confirmed that TPC and TFC are not the only phytochemicals responsible for the antioxidant activity of the niger sees, as was reflected by the poor correlation between TPC and AA activity. Hence these findings indicate that the seeds of Niger could be an important source of essential fatty acids and medicinally important phytochemicals important for nutritional health improvement and agricultural development in Ethiopia.
Comparing the effects of computerized versus manual methods of identifying point-specific acupuncture as an adjunct to physiotherapy in the management of knee osteoarthritis: A randomized controlled trial protocol
Background Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a prevalent condition causing significant pain and functional impairment. Acupuncture has shown promise as an adjunctive therapy, but conventional manual selection of acupoints lacks standardization. The Acugraph system provides a computerized method for identifying acupoints, potentially enhancing treatment precision. Objective This study aims to compare the effects of computerized Acugraph-guided acupuncture versus manually selected acupuncture as adjuncts to physiotherapy in managing KOA. Methods A randomized, double-blind controlled trial will be conducted with 50 participants diagnosed with mild to moderate KOA. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups: Group 1 Comp-AcuPhysio (n = 25), receiving Acugraph-guided acupuncture with physiotherapy, or Group 2 Man-AcuPhysio (n = 25), receiving manually selected acupuncture with physiotherapy. Both groups will undergo 12 weekly treatment sessions, each lasting 60 minutes. Outcome measures, including the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score, active knee flexion range, Timed Up and Go test, Visual Analog Scale for pain, Short Form-36 health survey, and Personal Integrated Energetics score, will be assessed at baseline and immediately post-intervention. An intention-to-treat analysis will be applied. Changes from baseline to 12 weeks will be analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance for both within-group and between-group comparisons. Results This study will provide a definitive assessment of the effectiveness of computerized Acugraph-guided acupuncture compared to manually selected acupuncture as supplementary treatments alongside KOA physiotherapeutic rehabilitation. Conclusion This trial will offer insights into how incorporating technology-driven approaches, such as Acugraph, with physiotherapy can enhance the customization and effectiveness of KOA management, leading to improved clinical outcomes. These results could advocate for the integration of technological tools in acupuncture to boost treatment precision and efficacy for KOA. Microbiota-derived proteins synergize with IL-23 to drive IL22 production in model type 3 innate lymphoid cells
Microbiota-induced production of IL-22 by type 3 innate lymphoid cells (ILC3) plays an important role in maintaining intestinal health. Such IL-22 production is driven, in part, by IL-23 produced by gut myeloid cells that have sensed select microbial-derived mediators. The extent to which ILC3 can directly respond to microbial metabolites via IL-22 production is less clear, in part due to the difficulty of isolating and maintaining sufficient numbers of viable ILC3 ex vivo. Hence, we, herein, examined the response of the ILC3 cell line, MNK-3, to microbial metabolites in vitro. We observed that fecal supernatants (FS), by themselves, elicited modest levels of IL-22 and synergized with IL-23 to drive robust IL-22 production assayed by qRT-PCR and ELISA. The IL-22 synergistic activity of FS was not mimicked by an array of candidate microbial metabolites but could be attributed to bacterial proteins. Examining how MNK3 cells exposed to IL-23, FS, both, or neither via RNA-seq and immunoblotting indicated that FS activated MNK-3 cells in a distinct pattern from IL-23: FS activates p-38 MAPK while IL-23 activates STAT3 signaling pathways. Collectively, these studies indicate ILC3 sensing of microbiota proteins promotes IL-22 production suggesting the possibility of manipulating microbiota to increase IL-22 without risk of IL-23-mediated chronic inflammatory diseases.

The effect of an additional pre-extubational loading dose of caffeine citrate on mechanically ventilated preterm infants (NEOKOFF trial): Study protocol for a multicenter randomized clinical trial
Background Minimizing the duration of mechanical ventilation is one of the most important therapeutic goals during the care of preterm infants at neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). The rate of extubation failure among preterm infants is between 16% and 40% worldwide. Numerous studies have been conducted on the assessment of extubation suitability, the optimal choice of respiratory support around extubation, and the effectiveness of medical interventions. Since the Caffeine Therapy for Apnea of Prematurity (CAP) trial, caffeine has become one of the essential drugs at NICUs. However, the optimal dosage and timing for adequate effectiveness still need to be more conclusive. Previous studies suggest that higher doses of caffeine treatment increase the success rate of extubation. Therefore, we aim to determine whether using a single additional loading dose of caffeine citrate one hour prior to extubation impacts the success rate of extubation. Methods The study is an open-label, multicenter randomized clinical trial testing the effectiveness and safety of pre-extubational loading dose of caffeine citrate. Inclusion criteria will be infants born before the 32nd gestational week, before the first extubation attempt after at least 48 hours of mechanical ventilation, and a signed parental informed consent. A total of 226 patients will be randomly allocated to either the experimental or control group. The randomization will be stratified by gestational age and antenatal steroid prophylaxis. Preterm infants in the experimental group will receive an additional intravenous (IV) loading dose (20 mg/kg) of caffeine citrate one hour before the first planned extubation, in addition to the standard dosing regimen (20 mg/kg caffeine citrate IV on the first day of life and 5 to 10 mg/kg IV or orally caffeine citrate each consecutive day). Preterm infants in the control group will receive the standard dosing regimen. The primary outcome will be reintubation within 48 hours. Discussion A pre-extubational loading dose of caffeine citrate can reduce extubation failure. Obtaining evidence on this feature has the potential to contribute to finding the optimal dosing regimen. A new shortcut for competitive sports development? The purpose of and strategy for developing and introducing sepaktakraw in Taiwan
A growing number of countries and regions have introduced emerging sports in recent years; however, few studies have been conducted to determine how and why they do so. This article focuses on why a new sport, sepaktakraw, was introduced in Taiwan and how strategies for achieving international sporting success were developed in a short period. The sports policy factors leading to the international sporting success model proposed by De Bosscher et al. were adopted as this study’s analytical framework. Data were obtained from official government and sport federation documents, media reports, and semistructured interviews with 18 key stakeholders. This study revealed three main reasons for the introduction of sepaktakraw in Taiwan: (1) low introduction costs, (2) breakthroughs to win medals at the Asian Games, and (3) advantageous entry into international sports organization leadership. Seven aspects are prioritized in Taiwan’s sepaktakraw development strategy: (1) obtaining government financial support; (2) institutionalizing organisational decision-making; (3) taking universities as a breakthrough point and then gradually shifting to promote popularization at the grassroots level; (4) selecting players on the basis of competition results; (5) using school badminton courts; (6) strengthening coach training; and (7) actively participating in and striving to host international tournaments. The findings could provide guidelines and examples for other countries or regions to follow when introducing new sports and moving towards the successful development of competitive sports.
The impact of resident involvement and postgraduate year on head and neck surgery for obstructive sleep apnea
To assess the impact of resident involvement and resident postgraduate year (PGY) on head and neck obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) surgical outcomes. We analyzed head and neck OSA surgeries from 2005–2012 via the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database. Demographic, preoperative, and postoperative variables were analyzed via multivariate regression to determine the impact of resident involvement and resident PGY on 30-day outcomes. Of 975 surgeries, 234 (24.0%) involved a resident: 120 (51.3%) involved a junior (PGY 1–3) resident and 114 (48.7%) involved a senior (PGY 4–5) resident. Multivariate analysis showed no significant impact on surgical, medical, or overall complication rates with resident involvement (all p > 0.05). Likewise, after separation of involved residents into junior or senior cohorts based on PGY, neither junior nor senior resident involvement significantly increased the odds of medical, surgical, or overall complications compared to operations performed by the attending alone (all p > 0.05). Resident involvement significantly increased readmission rates (6.1% versus 1.4%, p = 0.041) and operation time (92.1 ± 59.9 minutes versus 53.6 ± 42.0 minutes, p < 0.001) when compared to cases without resident involvement. Resident involvement in OSA surgery does not significantly impact rates of surgical medical, or overall complications. However, resident involvement increases 30-day readmission rates and almost doubles operation time, suggesting that resident involvement in head and neck OSA surgery remains relatively safe but further efforts to improve efficiency are likely needed.
Overcoming the threat of anti-bias interventions: Combining self-report and psychophysiological measures to capture the process of change
Anti-bias interventions do not always have the intended results and can even backfire. In light of research on the psychology of morality, we examined whether confronting people with evidence of their own (group’s) bias causes a (psychophysiological) threat response, and how to overcome this. We focused on an intervention addressing gender bias in teacher evaluations. After assessing their own teaching evaluations, we presented student research participants (N = 101; 71.3% female), in Part 1 of the intervention, with evidence of bias displayed in such teaching evaluations. This evidence either did (self-implied condition) or did not (self not-implied condition) include participants’ own ostensibly biased evaluations. In Part 2 of the intervention, we asked participants to reflect on the issue of gender bias, and compared the impact of two experimental instructions. In the promotion condition, instructions referred to emphasizing how the university could try to achieve the ideal of promoting fair and just evaluations of teachers. In the prevention condition, instructions referred to highlighting the university’s obligation to prevent unfair and unjust teacher evaluations. While participants verbally reflected on the intervention, during both phases (in Part 1 and Part 2) we measured their psychophysiological responses using indices of cardiovascular ‘threat vs. challenge’. Then, we used self-report measures to examine participants’ explicit responses to the different parts of the intervention. Results revealed that implicating the self in the occurrence of bias (Part 1) raises a psychophysiological threat response. However, emphasizing the future ideal of promoting fair evaluations of teachers (rather than the obligation of preventing biased evaluations; Part 2) resulted in a psychophysiological challenge response and increased perceived coping abilities to combat such bias. The implications of these findings are discussed.
Spatial distribution and determinants of improved shared sanitation facilities among households in Ethiopia: Using 2019 mini-Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey
Introduction Limited or shared sanitation services are considered improved sanitation facilities, but they are shared between two or more households. Globally, 600 million people use shared toilet facilities. Although shared facilities are not classified as improved sanitation due to potential infection risks, inaccessibility, and safety concerns, this is a significant issue in developing countries like Ethiopia. Evidence on the distribution of shared sanitation services and their determinants in Ethiopia is limited. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the extent of shared toilet facilities and their determinants among households in Ethiopia. Methods The 2019 Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey (EDHS) served as the basis for the cross-sectional secondary data analysis. The analysis included a total of 7,770 households from the weighted sample. STATA 14 software was used to clean, weigh, and analyze the data. To explore the distribution and determine the factors associated with shared toilet facilities in Ethiopia, both spatial and mixed-effect analyses were utilized. A p-value of less than 0.05 was used to display the relationships between the dependent and independent variables, employing adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals. Results The magnitude of improved shared sanitation facilities among households in Ethiopia, according to the EDHS 2019, was 10.5% (95% CI: 9.88, 11.24). The prevalence was highest in Addis Ababa at 70.2% and lowest in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region at 2.4%. Individual-level variables significantly associated with the use of improved shared toilet facilities included being a household head aged 55 years or older [AOR = 0.48; 95% CI: 0.33, 0.71], having secondary education or higher [AOR = 2.43; 95% CI: 1.80, 3.28], and belonging to middle or rich wealth status [middle: AOR = 2.32; 95% CI: 1.35, 3.96; rich: AOR = 6.23; 95% CI: 3.84, 10.11]. Community-level characteristics such as residing in urban areas [AOR = 7.60; 95% CI: 3.47, 16.67], the metropolitan region [AOR = 25.83; 95% CI: 10.1, 66.3], and periphery regions [AOR = 5.01; 95% CI: 2.40, 10.48] were also associated with the use of shared toilet facilities. Conclusion The usage of improved shared toilet facilities among households in Ethiopia is relatively low. Significant factors related to the use of shared toilet facilities were being 55 years of age or older, possessing secondary or higher education, having a middle or rich wealth status, living in urban areas, and residing in metropolitan or peripheral regions. To improve access to and utilization of shared sanitation facilities, Ethiopian policy should emphasize user education and awareness.
Cardiorespiratory demands of firearms training instruction and 15m shuttle tests in British law enforcement
Objectives Law enforcement agencies require minimum fitness standards to safeguard their officers and training staff. Firearms instructors (FI) are expected to maintain the same standards as their operational counterparts. This study aimed to quantify the daily physiological demands placed on FI. Methods 19 FI (45 ± 5 years) completed occupational tasks whilst wearing heart rate (HR) monitors for a minimum 10 days. Maximal oxygen consumption (VO 2 max) testing was conducted on FI during a treadmill test (TT) and a multistage shuttle test (ST). Linear regression models were used to model the relationship between VO 2 and HR throughout the TT. This model was applied to HR data from occupational tasks to infer oxygen consumption. Repeated Measures ANOVAs were used to compare time spent in VO 2 max equivalent zones throughout. Results The VO 2 max achieved during ST (45.1 ± 5.6 ml/kg/min) was significantly higher than TT (39 ± 3 ml/kg/min) (p = 0.014). Time to exhaustion (TTE) was sooner on ST (06:26 min) compared to TT (13:16 min) (p < .001). FI spent ~85% of occupational time with an oxygen demand ≤20 ml/kg/min (p < .005). The most intense occupational tasks saw FI achieve VO 2 max ≥30 ml/kg/min, but <40 ml/kg/min. Conclusion Using ST to assess cardiorespiratory fitness resulted in a quicker TTE and a higher VO 2 max. Predominantly, FI occupational tasks are low intensity with sporadic exposures requiring a VO 2 max of >40 ml/kg/min. To safeguard FI from occupational-related cardiorespiratory or long-term health issues, it is intuitive to suggest fitness standards should exceed a VO 2 max of 40 ml/kg/min.
Tillage type and sentinel insect species affect the relative prevalence of the entomopathogenic fungus, Metarhizium robertsii, in soil
Because the use of synthetic agrochemicals is generally not allowed in organic crop production systems, growers rely on natural substances and processes, such as microbial control, to suppress insect pests. Reduced tillage practices are associated with beneficial soil organisms, such as entomopathogenic fungi, that can contribute to the natural control of insect pests. The impacts of management, such as tillage, in a cropping system can affect soil biota in the current season and can also persist over time as legacy effects. We investigated the in-season and legacy effects of soil management in four, three-year organic feed grain and forage production systems that varied in number and intensity of soil disturbances on the relative prevalence of the entomopathogenic fungus, Metarhizium robertsii. Employing sentinel bait assays with Tenebrio molitor and Galleria mellonella, we found that relative prevalence, measured as infection rate of sentinel insects, was lowest in systems utilizing a shallow high-speed disk (G. mellonella: 14%; T. molitor: 23%) in the current and previous seasons compared to systems that included inversion and non-inversion tillage (G. mellonella: 22%; T. molitor: 34%) or no-till planting (G. mellonella: 21%; T. molitor: 30%,). There was no difference in prevalence in systems that included the use of a high-speed disk compared to a perennial hay crop (G. mellonella: 16%; T. molitor: 28%). There were no negative legacy effects of inversion tillage on the prevalence of M. robertsii in subsequent crops. Sentinel assays with G. mellonella (19%) produced overall lower estimates of relative prevalence of M. robertsii than T. molitor (29%) but the association of relative prevalence with environmental variables was greater in assays with G. mellonella. We suggest that the use of occasional inversion tillage is not damaging to populations of M. robertsii in soil and that surveys using assays with multiple sentinel insect species will improve our ability to understand the effects of agricultural practices on entomopathogenic fungi.
Rabies transmitted from vampires to cattle: An overview
Rabies is a zoonotic infectious disease of global distribution that impacts human and animal health. In rural Latin America, rabies negatively impacts food security and the economy due to losses in livestock production. The common vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus, is the main reservoir and transmitter of rabies virus (RABV) to domestic animals in Latin America. Desmodus rotundus RABV is known to impact the cattle industry, from small farmers to large corporations. We assessed the main patterns of rabies in cattle attributed to D. rotundus RABV across Latin America. Epidemiological data on rabies from Latin America were collected from the Pan American Health Organization spanning the 1970–2023 period. Analyses revealed an average of 450 outbreaks annually for the countries where D. rotundus is distributed, with at least 6 animals dying in each outbreak. Brazil, Colombia, Peru, and Mexico were the Latin American countries with the highest number of rabies outbreaks during the study period and are the most affected countries in recent years. Findings suggest a re-emergence of bat-borne rabies in the region with more outbreaks reported in recent years, especially during the 2003–2020 period. Rabies outbreaks in cattle in the 2000–2020 period were significantly more frequent than in previous decades, with an increase in cross-species transmission after 2002. The size of outbreaks, however, was smaller in recent years, involving lower cattle mortality. Peru, El Salvador, and Brazil showed a strong association (R = 0.73, p = 0.01) between rabies incidence in D. rotundus (rates per million humans: 1.61, 0.94, and 1.09, respectively) and rabies outbreaks in cattle (rates per million cattle: 465.85, 351.01, and 48.22, respectively). A sustained, standardized, and widespread monitoring of D. rotundus demography and health could serve to inform an early warning system for the early detection of RABV and other bat-borne pathogens in Latin America. Current data can be used to forecast when, where, and in which intensity RABV outbreaks are more likely to occur in subtropical and tropical Latin America. A decrease in the size of outbreaks could suggest that strategies for epidemic management (e.g., education, early diagnosis, vaccination) have been effective. The increase in the number of outbreaks could suggest that the factors facilitating cross-species transmission could be on the rise.
The mediating role of core self-evaluation in the association between perceived peer relationship quality and loneliness in university students
This study investigated the mediating role of core self-evaluation (CSE) in the relationship between the perception of peer relationship quality and loneliness among university students during the COVID-19 pandemic. An online survey was conducted with 462 university students (mean age: 20.7 ± 1.56 years; age range: 18 to 25 years) using the Peer Relationships Satisfaction Scale, Core Self-Evaluation Scale, and UCLA Loneliness Scale. The results revealed a significant negative correlation between perceived peer relationship quality and loneliness, as well as between CSE and loneliness. Core self-evaluation accounted for 36.23% of the total effect of peer relationship quality on loneliness. Additionally, female students reported higher levels of loneliness than male students, and students from rural areas experienced greater loneliness than their urban counterparts. The study concluded that fostering high-quality peer relationships and enhancing core self-evaluation could be effective strategies for reducing loneliness among university students.
Detection of SARS-CoV-2 and a possible variant in shelter cats
SARS-CoV-2 is the cause of mild to severe acute respiratory disease that led to significant loss of human lives worldwide between 2019 and 2022. The virus has been detected in various animals including cats and dogs making it a major public health concern and a One Health issue. In this study, conjunctival and pharyngeal swabs (n = 350) and serum samples (n = 350) were collected between July and December 2020 from cats that were housed in an animal shelter and tested for the infection of SARS-CoV-2 using real time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) that targeted the N1 and N2 genes, and a SARS-CoV-2 surrogate virus neutralization Test (sVNT), respectively. 203 (58%) swab samples were negative (N1 and N2 not detected), 2 (0.6%) were positive (N1 and N2 detected) and 145 (41%) were inconclusive (only N1 detected). Analysis of the N2 region and multiple sequence alignment revealed base-pair deletions and substitutions in the N2 probe binding region of the feline samples RNA extracts in comparison with the positive control and human SARS-CoV-2 sequences in the GenBank database. Substituting the N2 probe with a probe derived from the cat sample amplicon sequences, 123 of 127 (96.9%) of the N2 negative samples returned positive. All but one of the 350 serum samples were negative for SARS-CoV-2 antibody. These observations indicated that although detection of SARS-CoV-2 infection was low in the samples tested, pet cats can harbor the virus and serve as potential source for virus spread that may lead to human infections. Additionally, cats may harbor a yet-to-be described virus that is somewhat related to SARS-CoV-2.
"No pain, no gain": Simulation-based learning in teacher education: The mediating role of simulation hindrances
Research on educational simulations has attempted to decipher the simulation-based learning (SBL) process by examining factors that facilitate and impede this process. In the current study, we examined the role of SBL participants’ hindrances, in particular their experience of anxiety or fear, which we view using the framework of leaving one’s comfort zone. Departure from one’s comfort zone has never been studied in the context of SBL in teacher education. A quantitative analysis of data collected via a questionnaire on Simulation Learning Outcomes in Teacher Education (SLOTE) revealed a model in which the hindrance variable potentially mediated all of the relationships between the background variables and the simulation learning outcomes (i.e., communication skills and collaborative learning insights). These results improve the theoretical understanding of the SBL process in this field and indicate ways to optimally utilize potential hindrances to plan and apply SBL for the purpose of learning.
