Unidirectional chiral scattering from single enantiomeric plasmonic nanoparticles

Abstract Controlling scattering and routing of chiral light at the nanoscale is important for optical information processing and imaging, quantum technologies as well as optical manipulation. Here, we introduce a concept of rotating chiral dipoles in order to achieve unidirectional chiral scattering. Implementing this concept by engineering multipole excitations in helicoidal plasmonic nanoparticles, we experimentally demonstrate enantio-sensitive and highly-directional forward scattering of circularly polarised light. The intensity of this highly-directional scattering is defined by the mutual relation between the handedness of the incident light and the chirality of the structure. The concept of rotating chiral dipoles offers numerous opportunities for engineering scattering from chiral nanostructures and optical nano-antennas paving the way for innovative designs and applications of chiral light-matter interactions.

Highly efficient construction of monkey blastoid capsules from aged somatic cells

Abstract Blastoids—blastocyst-like structures created in vitro—emerge as a valuable model for early embryonic development research. Non-human primates stem cell-derived blastoids are an ethically viable alternative to human counterparts, yet the low formation efficiency of monkey blastoid cavities, typically below 30%, has limited their utility. Prior research has predominantly utilized embryonic stem cells. In this work, we demonstrate the efficient generation of blastoids from induced pluripotent stem cells and somatic cell nuclear transfer embryonic stem cells derived from aged monkeys, achieving an 80% formation efficiency. We also introduce a hydrogel-based microfluidics platform for the scalable and reproducible production of size-adjustable, biodegradable blastoid capsules, providing a stable 3D structure and mechanical protection. This advancement in the high-efficiency, scalable production of monkey blastoid capsules from reprogrammed aged somatic cells significantly enhances the study of embryonic development and holds promise for regenerative medicine.

Plant interactions associated with a directional shift in the richness range size relationship during the Glacial-Holocene transition in the Arctic

Abstract A nearly ubiquitous negative relationship between taxonomic richness and mean range-size (average area of taxa) is observed across space. However, the complexity of the mechanism limits its applicability for conservation or range prediction. We explore whether the relationship holds over time, and whether plant speciation, environmental heterogeneity, or plant interactions are major factors of the relationship within northeast Siberia and Alaska. By analysing sedimentary ancient DNA from seven lakes, we reconstruct plant richness, biotic environmental heterogeneity, and mean range-size over the last 30,000 years. We find positive richness to range-size relationships during the glacial period, shifting to negative during the interglacial period. Our results indicate neither speciation nor environmental heterogeneity is the principal driver. Network analyses show more positive interactions during the glacial period, which may contribute to positive richness to range-size relationships. Conversely, in the interglacial environment, negative interactions may result in negative relationships. Our findings suggest potential susceptibility to invasion but conservation advantages in far northern tundra given their positive interactions.

Neural circuits underlying context-dependent competition between defensive actions in Drosophila larvae

Abstract To ensure their survival, animals must be able to respond adaptively to threats within their environment. However, the precise neural circuit mechanisms that underlie flexible defensive behaviors remain poorly understood. Using neuronal manipulations, machine learning-based behavioral detection, electron microscopy (EM) connectomics and calcium imaging in Drosophila larvae, we map second-order interneurons that are differentially involved in the competition between defensive actions in response to competing aversive cues. We find that mechanosensory stimulation inhibits escape behaviors in favor of startle behaviors by influencing the activity of escape-promoting second-order interneurons. Stronger activation of those neurons inhibits startle-like behaviors. This suggests that competition between startle and escape behaviors occurs at the level of second-order interneurons. Finally, we identify a pair of descending neurons that promote startle behaviors and could modulate the escape sequence. Taken together, these results characterize the pathways involved in startle and escape competition, which is modulated by the sensory context.

CT scan-derived pectoralis muscle parameters are closely associated with COVID-19 outcomes: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Background The relationships between pectoralis muscle parameters and outcomes in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) remain uncertain. Methods We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library from 1 January 2019 to 1 May 2024 to identify non-overlapping studies evaluating pectoralis muscle-associated index on chest CT scan with clinical outcome in COVID-19 patients. Random-effects and fixed-effects meta-analyses were performed, and heterogeneity between studies was quantified using the I2 statistic. The risk of study bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. Funnel plots for detecting small-study effects. Results A total of 9 studies with 4109 COVID-19 patients were included. The meta-analysis findings revealed a correlation between pectoralis muscle parameters and COVID-19 prognosis. Specifically, patients with higher pectoralis muscle density (PMD) exhibited a lower mortality risk, with an odds ratio (OR) of 0.95 (95% CI: 0.92–0.99). The rate of intubation was lower in COVID-19 patients with a high pectoralis muscle index (PMI) (OR =  0.96, 95% CI: 0.92–1.00). Conclusion In summary, a low PMD is associated with a marginally elevated risk of mortality, whereas a decreased PMI represents a risk factor for intubation in COVID-19 patients. These findings suggest that pectoralis muscle parameters on chest CT may be a useful prognostic tool for COVID-19 patients.

Evaluation of Global South’s efficiency at the Summer Olympics

States differ significantly in international sports competitions in how they use the resources they have and whether they do so in an efficient manner. In this paper, we investigate the efficiency of the nations from the so-called “Global South”, in total 52 states, during the 2000–2024 Summer Olympics. By doing this, our paper is the first using the Bayesian stochastic frontier analysis for exploring the performance of the states of the Global South. We perform an age decomposition, which shows that the 25–29 and 30–34 age cohorts contribute the most to Olympic performance. Our findings also suggests that transient efficiencies are higher than persistent efficiencies in a majority of the analyzed nations. Our analysis represents an important contribution in analyzing developing states‘ efficiency in elite sports.

Dapagliflozin inhibits ferroptosis to improve chronic heart failure by regulating Nrf2/HO-1/GPX4 signaling pathway

Objective To study the effect of Dapagliflozin on ferroptosis in rabbits with chronic heart failure and to reveal its possible mechanism. Methods Nine healthy adult male New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into Sham group (only thorax opening was performed in Sham group, no ascending aorta circumferential ligation was performed), Heart failure group (HF group, ascending aorta circumferential ligation was performed in HF group to establish the animal model of heart failure), and Dapagliflozin group (DAPA group, after the rabbit chronic heart failure model was successfully made in DAPA group). Dapagliflozin was given by force-feeding method. Echocardiography was used to assess cardiac function, HE staining to evaluate pathological changes in the heart, Prussia blue staining to observe iron ions in myocardial tissue, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to determine serum levels of the inflammatory factors interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) at the end of week 12 and/or the end of week 16. The oxidative stress related indexes of malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and superoxide dismutase (GSH-Px) in serum were quantitatively analyzed by colorimetry. Protein expression levels of nuclear factor E2-related factor 2(Nrf2), heme oxygenase-1(HO-1), glutathione peroxidase 4(Gpx4) were detected by Western blot. Results In animals with chronic heart failure, Dapagliflozin improved cardiomyocyte hypertrophy, degeneration and necrosis. Dapagliflozin increased serum GSH-Px and SOD levels and decreased IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α and MDA levels (P < 0.05) in a rabbit model of heart failure. Dapagliflozin also decreased cardiac iron ion levels and increased Nrf2, HO-1 and GPX4 protein expression. Conclusion Dapagliflozin can improve heart failure by inhibiting oxidative stress and ferroptosis, and its mechanism may be related to the regulation of Nrf2/HO-1/GPX4 signaling pathway.

Changeover method for biosafety cabinets using ozone gas

This study evaluated the effectiveness of a biosafety cabinet equipped with an ozone generator, particularly during the transition periods between the production of cell products. As living cell products cannot undergo sterilization, maintaining an aseptic manufacturing environment is paramount. Raw materials, often derived from human tissues, are frequently contaminated with various resident bacteria, necessitating environmental resets after each process. The utility of this device against bacteria, including endotoxins, endospores, and fungi endemic to human tissues, could facilitate safe and reproducible production changeovers through a simplified, one-button operation. This study focused on bacteria resistant to conventional cleaning protocols, specifically targeting endospore-forming bacteria with robust resistance to disinfectants, spore-forming fungi, and included analyses of endotoxins. The effects of ozone exposure on Pseudomonas aeruginosa (an endotoxin-producing bacterium), Bacillus subtilis (an endospore-forming bacterium), and Aspergillus brasiliensis (a spore-forming fungus) were assessed. In the dedicated biosafety cabinet equipped with an ozone generator, the treatment group exposed to ozone showed a significant reduction in both colony-forming units and endotoxin levels in Pseudomonas aeruginosa at 1.0 × 104 colony-forming units (CFUs) compared to the control group. Moreover, the ozone treatment markedly decreased the colony formation of Bacillus subtilis endospores and Aspergillus brasiliensis spores. Given its effectiveness against endospores and endotoxins—among the most challenging bacterial derivatives to eliminate—the device demonstrates potential for enhanced bacterial control in Grade A biosafety cabinets within cell product manufacturing facilities. The system may substantially reduce operator stress by ensuring product safety through straightforward operational procedures and high reproducibility, although further validation is required.

A clinical study exploring the prediction of microvascular invasion in hepatocellular carcinoma through the use of combined enhanced CT and MRI radiomics

Objective To develop a predictive model for microvascular invasion (MVI) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) through radiomics analysis, integrating data from both enhanced computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on 93 HCC patients who underwent partial hepatectomy. The gold standard for MVI was based on the histopathological diagnosis of the tissue. The 93 patients were randomly divided into training and validation groups in 7:3 ratio. The imaging data of patients, including CT and MRI, were collected and processed using 3D Slicer to delineate the region of interest (ROI) for each tumor. Radiomics features were extracted from CT and MRI of patients using Python. Lasso regression analysis was used to select optimal radiomics features for MVI in the training group. The optimal radiomics features of CT and MRI were selected to establish the prediction model. The predictive performance of the model was evaluated using the receiver operator characteristic curve (ROC), calibration curve, and decision curve analysis (DCA). Results After univariate and multivariate analyses, it was found that tumor diameter was significantly different between the MVI positive and negative groups. After extracting 2153 imaging phenotyping features from the CT and MRI images of the 93 patients using Python, ten standardized coefficient non-zero imaging phenotyping features were finally determined by Lasso regression analysis in the CT and MRI images. A comprehensive predictive model with clinical variable and optimal radiomics features was established. The area under the curve (AUC) of the training group was 0.916 (95%CI: 0.843–1.000), sensitivity: 95.2%, specificity: 79.2%. In the validation group, the predictive model diagnosed MVI with AUC = 0.816 (95%CI: 0.642–0.990), sensitivity: 84.2%, and specificity: 75.0%. Conclusion The joint model that integrated the optimal radiomics features with clinical variables has good diagnostic performance for MVI of HCC and specific clinical applicability.

Nucleophilicity at copper(-I) in a compound with a Cu–Mg bond

Abstract Copper is ubiquitous as a structural material, and as a reagent in (bio)chemical transformations. A vast number of chemical reactions rely on the near-inevitable preference of copper for positive oxidation states to make useful compounds. Here we show this electronic paradigm can be subverted in a stable compound with a copper-magnesium bond, which conforms to the formal oxidation state of Cu(-I). The Cu-Mg bond is synthesized by the reaction of an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligated copper alkoxide with a dimeric magnesium(I) compound. Its identity is confirmed by single-crystal X-ray structural analysis and NMR spectroscopy, and computational investigations provide data consistent with a high charge density at copper. The Cu-Mg bond acts as a source of the cupride anion, transferring the NHC-copper fragment to electrophilic s-, p-, and d-block atoms to make known and new copper-containing compounds.

The role of extra-familial factors in adolescence for the association between out-of-home care and adult psychiatric disorders–A birth cohort study

Background Psychiatric disorders are a substantial public health concern, and childhood adversity a well-known risk factor for it. Investigating gender differences in vulnerability and resilience processes following out-of-home care (OHC) as proxy for childhood adversity can help map opportunities for the prevention of psychiatric disorders. Methods We followed a large birth cohort for psychiatric disorders (anxiety, depression, and self-harm, and substance misuse) between age 25–62 years, comparing individuals with and without OHC experience. We investigated different extra-familial risk and resources factors following OHC via gender-stratified mediation and moderation analyses to approximate risk accumulation (vulnerability processes) and buffers of risk (resilience processes). Results OHC is prospectively associated with psychiatric disorders in adulthood. Lower school grades, delinquency, and early parenthood are mediators of the association, with the exception of education in girls in relation to anxiety, depression, and self-harm, and early parenthood in boys in relation to substance misuse. Number of best friends moderates OHC experience in boys, and there is a trend for higher educational achievement to also act as buffer, even though this trend was not statistically significant. Leisure time activities did not act as buffer. Conclusion Vulnerability and resilience processes after childhood adversity are gendered: Risk accumulation runs via delinquency and poorer educational outcomes in boys more than in girls, while early parenthood is a more dominant risk factor in girls. Having more best friends and higher grades may act as buffer, especially in boys.
