Experimental evidence demonstrating how freeze-thaw patterns affect spoilage of perishable cached food

For the small number of temperate and boreal species that cache perishable food, previous research suggests that increasing freeze-thaw events can have a negative impact on fitness by degrading the quality of cached food. However, there is no experimental evidence that directly links freeze-thaw events to cache quality. To examine how the timing, frequency, duration, and intensity of freeze-thaw events influenced cached food mass loss, a proxy for caloric content, we conducted a series of month-long laboratory experiments by placing simulated caches (raw chicken placed between two pieces of black spruce Picea mariana bark) in programmable freezers. Freeze-thaw treatments were modelled after weather data from Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario, where a population of Canada jays (Perisoreus canadensis), a species that caches perishable food for overwinter survival and to support late-winter breeding, has declined by >  70% since the 1980s. First, we found no evidence that an increased frequency of freeze-thaw events influenced mass loss, suggesting that microstructural damage caused by crystal reformation does not significantly influence cache quality. Instead, our experimental results demonstrated that mass loss was positively influenced by longer individual thaws, which likely reflects increased microbial growth, oxidation, and progressive drip loss. We also found that caches lost more weight when subjected to early freeze-thaw events compared to late freeze-thaw events. Finally, we show that milder freezes led to less mass loss and, unexpectedly, warmer than average thaws post-freeze also led to less mass loss. Our results suggest that longer thaw periods post-freezing and milder freezes cause or lead to significantly increased spoilage of perishable cached food. All of these temperature-related conditions are closely associated with long-term changes in climate and, thus, the effects on cache degradation reported in these experiments should be applicable to species caching perishable food in the wild.

Prevalence of HTN and its risk factors among tribal population in Chhattisgarh (India) as per the fifth round of the National Family Health Survey

Background The so-called protected tribal population also faces the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The high-altitude tribes are thought to be genetically and environmentally protected from hypertension-like diseases. Methods Survey of the National Family Health Survey-5 (2019-2022) employs a two-stage sampling method (PSU). The total population of 72010, aged 15 years and above, were included from Chhattisgarh, India, out of which 27760 belong to tribes. Pre-hypertension (pre-HTN) and hypertension (HTN) were measured using standard procedures. Results Overall prevalence of pre-HTN and HTN (42.7% and 26%) in tribes was comparable to the general population (43.14% and 25.48%). The prevalence of pre-HTN was higher than HTN in tribes. We observed a positive association between increasing age and prevalence of HTN in males and females. aOR ratio (12.58; 9.72 -16.28) among the females aged 65-74 years was the highest, and the aOR (9.63; 6.89 -13.44) ratio among the males was recorded highest at 75 years and above. Odds of developing HTN increased with higher education (aOR 1.24; 1 -1.53 and 0.69; 0.5 -0.94), highest wealth index (aOR 1.38; 1.04 -1.83 and 1.35; 1.01 -1.8) in male and females respectively. Conclusion The elevated frequencies of HTN among tribes against their background condition confirm that their epidemiological transition is loaded with significant HTN. We recommend sharing this initiative with our primary healthcare providers and to the policymakers to take corrective measures because they serve as the first point of contact for early screening to reduce the burden of illness.

Cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) peptide-positive neuron populations in the enteric nervous system of the porcine descending colon depend on age and gender

The enteric nervous system (ENS) is a complex structure located in the wall of the gastrointestinal tract. One of the less-known active substances found in the ENS is cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript peptide (CART). It is known that CART-positive enteric neurons take part in the reactions to pathological stimuli, but knowledge of physiological stimuli-dependent changes in their population is extremely limited. The aim of the present study was to investigate the age- and gender-dependent diversities in the distribution of CART-positive neurons in the porcine colonic ENS using the double immunofluorescence technique. The obtained results have shown that age affects the number of CART-positive neurons in the colonic ENS and the character and intensity of age-caused changes depend on the type of the enteric plexus, and the most visible changes have been noted in the myenteric plexus in which the percentage of CART-positive neurons amounted to 22.3 ± 0.2% in young females, 20.7 ± 0.4% in young males, 23.7 ± 0.2% in adult females and 25.8 ± 01% in adult males. Moreover, during the present study, sex-dependent diversities in the percentage of CART-positive neurons were found, especially in adult animals. The obtained results suggest that CART in the ENS takes part in neuroplasticity processes occurring during the development, maturation and/or aging of the gastrointestinal tract, as well as that the number of CART-positive neurons is controlled by sex hormones and depends on the gender. However, the elucidation of all aspects connected with the influence of age and gender on the population of CART-positive neurons in the ENS requires further comprehensive studies.

Respiratory health and chronic disease risks in residents of agricultural areas in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand

Respiratory health and chronic disease risks are prevalent concerns in agricultural communities in Northern Thailand, prompting an assessment of these issues among residents in Chiang Mai. A cross-sectional study involving 145 participants was conducted in San Pa Tong District from October to December 2023, utilizing structured questionnaires and spirometry tests to evaluate lung function and chronic health disease risk. The study found that education and income significantly impacted lung function, with better FVC% and FEV1/FVC% predicted values observed in those with primary education and lower income. Lower DM risk was associated with better lung function (P =  0.023). Logistic regression showed a significant increase in lung function impairment among participants with high to very high DM risk (aOR 9.06, p < 0.05). High CV and COPD risk levels also correlated with lung function impairment, though not all results were statistically significant. The results emphasize the intricate interplay between socioeconomic factors, chronic disease risks, and lung function, advocating for public health interventions that holistically address population respiratory and metabolic health.

Direct-acting antivirals (DAA) positively affect depression and cognitive function in patients with chronic hepatitis C

The aim of the study was to determine how depression and cognitive dysfunction in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection are affected by treatment with direct-acting antivirals (DAA). Fifty-two chronic hepatitis C patients underwent neurocognitive and psychological evaluation before therapy and 5–6 months later. Depression was measured by Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), anxiety by State-Trait Anxiety inventory (STAI), neuroticism by Eysenck Personality Inventory (N/EPO-R), while Ruff Figural Fluency Test (RFFT), Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), The Grooved Pegboard Test (GPT), and California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT) were used to assess neurocognitive function. There was significant positive change in BDI scores (8.8 ± 6.6 vs 6.1 ± 6.1; p < 0.0001) while the most striking improvement in cognitive tests was observed for CVLT sum of immediate recall from Trial-1 to Trial-5 (50.9 ± 10.0 to 54.1 ± 10.0; p = 0.0005) and RFFT, where the number of unique designs increased from 77.2 ± 21.0 to 86.1 ± 28.3 (p < 0.0001). These differences remained significant when patients with advanced (METAVIR grade F3/F4) and those with mild (grade F0/F1/F2) liver disease were analyzed separately, although in general the improvements were more pronounced in the former group. In conclusion, in chronic HCV infection the brain function is markedly improved by DAA treatment.

Insights into the effects of geographical sourcing area on nutrient composition and sensory attributes of nine edible insects

Abstract With the rapidly growing world population, climate change uncertainties and depletion of our natural resources, edible insects are seen as sustainable and viable bioresources for food and feed to tackle global food and nutritional security issues, for their nutritional value, taste, and environmental sustainability. In this study, we investigated the effect of geographical distribution on the nutrient composition and sensory attributes of commonly consumed edible insects, namely Acheta domesticus, Apis mellifera, Gnathocera trivittata, Gryllotalpa africana, Imbrasia oyemensis, Locusta migratoria, Macrotermes subhylanus, Nomadacris septemfasciata, and Rhyncophorus phoenicis collected from six different geographical areas namely Fizi, Kabare, Kalehe, Idjwi, Mwenge and Walungu, in the Eastern D. R. Congo. Depending on edible insect species, geographical sourcing area affected significantly macronutrient composition and mineral profile as well as sensory attributes of investigated commonly edible insects. A principal component analysis (PCA-Biplot) indicated that the two axes accounted for up to 97.7% of the observed variability in the nutrient composition and sensory attributes of commonly consumed edible insects sourced from different geographical area. Visualized results after cluster analysis using non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) indicated that the geographical sourcing area has substantial and significant effect on the nutrient composition as well as sensory attributes of the studied commonly edible with a stress value of 0.185.

The big three perfectionism scales: A psychometric characterization of a Chinese music student population

Background Perfectionism as a multidimensional personality trait, is closely related to many important factors affecting mental, emotional, and daily life, and thus has received extensive attention from researchers around the world. The Big Three Perfectionism Scale (BTPS) is a widely recognized tool in global research, providing a comprehensive framework for assessing perfectionism through three higher-order factors and ten dimensions. Objectives This study aims to translate and validate the BTPS in the context of music student population in mainland China, assessing its cross-cultural reliability and psychometric properties to ensure its applicability within this specific population. Methods This study evaluated the factor structure, convergent validity, predictive validity, and overall validity of the Chinese version of the BTPS. The methodology involved translating the BTPS into Chinese and conducting cross-cultural validation through experiments with a substantial sample of musical expertise from Chinese mainland (n ≥  442). Results The results aimed to support the hypothesis that the three-factor structural model of the BTPS demonstrates invariance within this population. Preliminary experimental results indicated that the Chinese version of the BTPS has good validity in the musical expertise population in Chinese mainland (Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of 0.86, 0.95 and 0.94 for the three dimensions, respectively), and the significance of the data (KMO >  0.6, p <  0.05) suggests that it can be further analyzed by exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and validation factor analysis (CFA). Conclusions Our preliminary results show the feasibility of cross-cultural research on the findings of psychometric instruments from other countries, and the authors’ pioneering work is also of practical significance in enriching the psychometric instruments on perfectionism in China, which will provide a valid basis for a series of future studies on perfectionism related to music psychology.
