Cardiac vagal modulation predicts decision-making in sacrificial and everyday moral dilemmas

Abstract Cardiac vagal modulation indicates the self-regulatory activity of the autonomic nervous system and can thus be used to assess an individual’s ability to integrate physiological, cognitive, and emotional responses in the decision-making process. In this paper, cardiac vagal modulation, quantified by heart rate variability (HRV), was used to predict decision-making in two types of moral dilemmas: First, sacrificial dilemmas which create a moral conflict between utilitarian (acting to maximise aggregate well-being by sacrifice) and deontological (rejecting the sacrifice) alternatives; second, everyday dilemmas which create a conflict between altruistic (acting non-selfish) and egoistic (acting self-centered) alternatives. HRV was analysed in 112 healthy participants before, during, and after decision-making, allowing to assess not only self-regulatory ability (resting HRV) but also self-regulatory capacities (HRV during and after decision-making). HRV predicted concrete decisions, but effects were only found in women. In sacrificial dilemmas, deontological women showed a stronger vagal withdrawal but also a faster cardiac vagal recovery compared to high utilitarian women. In everyday moral dilemmas, altruism was associated with reduced vagal outflow and increased sympathetic activity. Findings suggest differences in the acquisition of self-regulatory capacities between decision-makers in both types of moral dilemmas, which can be measured by HRV.

C-type natriuretic peptide regulates lipid metabolism through a NPRB-PPAR pathway in the intramuscular and subcutaneous adipocytes in chickens

Abstract Natriuretic peptides (NPs) have an important role in lipid metabolism in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue in animals. C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) is an important NP, but the molecular mechanisms that underlie its activity are not completely understood. Treatment of intramuscular fat (IMF) and subcutaneous fat (SCF) adipocytes with CNP led to decreased differentiation, promoted proliferation and lipolysis, and increased the expression of natriuretic peptide receptor B (NPRB) mRNA. Silencing natriuretic peptide C (NPPC) had the opposite results in IMF and SCF adipocytes. Transcriptome analysis found 665 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in IMF adipocytes and 991 in SCF adipocytes. Seven genes in IMF adipocytes (FABP4, APOA1, ACOX2, ADIPOQ, CD36, FABP5, and LPL) and eight genes in SCF adipocytes (ACOX3, ACSL1, APOA1, CPT1A, CPT2, FABP4, PDPK1 and PPARα) are related to fat metabolism. Fifteen genes were found to be enriched in the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) pathway. Integrated analysis identified 113 intersection genes in IMF and SCF adipocytes, two of which (APOA1 and FABP4) were enriched in the PPAR pathway. In conclusion, CNP may regulated lipid metabolism through the NPRB-PPAR pathway in both IMF and SCF adipocytes, FABP4 and APOA1 may be the key genes that mediated CNP regulation of fat deposition.

Abstract Vector-borne bacterial pathogens can cause disease in a range of animals, including dromedary camels and dogs, but epidemiological and molecular studies on these pathogens are scarce in southern Egypt. In this study, we screened camels and dogs in southern Egypt (Luxor) for vector-borne bacterial pathogens, with molecular analysis of 200 blood samples collected from camels and dogs in the region. The Rickettsia aeschlimannii gltA gene was detected in 5% (5/100) of camel blood samples and 1% (1/100) of dog blood samples. This study is the first report of Rickettsia aeschlimannii in camel blood in southern Egypt. Additionally, the 16S rRNA gene of a Francisella-like endosymbiont was detected in both camel and dog blood for the first time, with infection rates of 2% (2/100) in camels and 2% (2/100) in dogs. In dog blood, the Borrelia theileri flaB gene was detected for the first time in southern Egypt at a positivity rate of 5% (5/100). Neither Coxiella nor Bartonella species were detected in this study. In southern Egypt, Rickettsia aeschlimannii, Borrelia theileri, and Francisella-like endosymbionts were detected in camels and dogs, providing valuable information about their infection rate and these findings contribute to a better understanding of their transmission dynamics.

Permeability scaling relationships of volcanic tuff from core to field scale measurements

Abstract A recent chemical explosive test in P-Tunnel at the Nevada National Security Site, Nevada, USA, was conducted to better understand how signals propagate from explosions in the subsurface. A primary signal of interest is the migration of gases that can be used to differentiate chemical from nuclear explosions. Gas migration is highly dependent on the rock permeability which is notoriously difficult to determine experimentally in the field due to a potentially large dependence on the scale over which measurements are made. Here, we present pre-explosion permeability estimates to characterize the geologic units surrounding the recent test. Permeability measurements were made at three scales of increasing size: core samples (≈2 cm), borehole packer system tests (≈1 m), and a pre-shot cavity pressurization test (&gt; 10 m) across ten tuff units. Permeability estimates based on core measurements showed little difference from borehole packer tests. However, permeability in most rock units calibrated from cavity pressurization tests resulted in higher permeability estimates by up to two orders of magnitude. Here, we demonstrate that the scale of the measurement significantly impacts the characterization efforts of hydraulic properties in volcanic tuff, and that local-scale measurements (&lt; 10 m scale) do not incorporate enough heterogeneity to accurately predict field-scale flow and mass transport.

NDVI and vegetation volume as predictors of urban bird diversity

Abstract Urban expansion and densification pose a challenge to urban biodiversity. Rapid estimation of biodiversity could help urban planners balance development and conservation goals. While the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) has proven useful for predicting urban bird diversity, new products derived from remote sensing, such as vegetation volume, could provide more detailed descriptions of available habitat, potentially improving biodiversity predictions. We evaluated the effectiveness of NDVI and vegetation volume as predictors of urban bird diversity and local community composition for different buffers around 86 sampling points in Munich, Germany. Using linear models, we showed that a 100 m buffer best described bird diversity (highest R 2 ) for both NDVI and vegetation volume compared to the other buffers. Contrary to expectations, NDVI was better than vegetation volume in predicting bird diversity (mean R 2 NDVI = 0.47, mean R 2 vegetation volume 0.37). We found a shift in community composition from species associated with human-modified landscapes to those associated with forests along an urban greenness gradient. In contrast to diversity, we found that vegetation volume was slightly better at predicting community composition. Using NDVI to predict bird diversity across Munich, we demonstrated its potential for predicting city-wide bird diversity. We discuss how such predictive maps can be used for urban planning and conservation. As urbanisation continues to impact global biodiversity, refining ecological models for urban planning will be crucial to developing more biodiverse urban environments.
