Abstract The genetic contributions to early onset heart failure (HF) are incompletely understood. Genetic testing in advanced HF patients undergoing heart transplantation (HTx) may yield clinical benefits, but data is limited. We performed deep-coverage whole genome sequencing (WGS) in 102 Swedish HTx recipients. Gene lists were compiled through a systematic literature review. Variants were prioritized for pathogenicity and classified manually. We also compared polygenic HF risk scores to a population-based cohort. We found a pathogenic (LP/P) variant in 34 individuals (34%). Testing yield was highest in hypertrophic (63% LP/P carriers), dilated (40%) and arrhythmogenic right ventricular (33%) cardiomyopathy and lower in ischemic cardiomyopathy (10%). A family history was more common in LP/P variant carriers than in non-carriers but was present in less than half of carriers (44% vs 13%, P < 0.001), whereas age was similar. Polygenic risk scores were similar in HTx recipients and the population cohort. In conclusion, we observed a high prevalence of pathogenic cardiomyopathy gene variants in individuals with early-onset advanced HF, which could not accurately be ruled out by family history and age. In contrast, we did not observe higher polygenic risk scores in early onset advanced HF cases than in the general population.

Taphonomic variation in vascular remains from Mesozoic non-avian dinosaurs

Abstract The identity and source of flexible, semi-transparent, vascular-like components recovered from non-avian dinosaur bone are debated, because: (1) such preservation is not predicted by degradation models; (2) taphonomic mechanisms for this type of preservation are not well defined; and (3) although support for molecular endogeneity has been demonstrated in select specimens, comparable data are lacking on a broader scale. Here, we use a suite of micromorphological and molecular techniques to examine vessel-like material recovered from the skeletal remains of six non-avian dinosaurs, representing different taxa, depositional environments and geological ages, and we compare the data obtained from our analyses against vessels liberated from extant ostrich bone. The results of this in-depth, multi-faceted study present strong support for endogeneity of the fossil-derived vessels, although we also detect evidence of invasive microorganisms.

Associations of cachexia and frailty with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

Abstract In the present study, we investigated the associations of cachexia (loss of muscle, weight and fat) and frailty (loss of weight and muscle) status with the risk of developing amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, because these specific terms are rarely used in this research area. In this prospective study, we extracted cachexia and frailty status from the UK Biobank cohort to study the associations of these conditions (as determined via international classification of disease-10 codes) with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. There was a greater risk of developing amyotrophic lateral sclerosis among individuals with cachexia and frailty status after adjusting for age, sex, income (pounds), body mass index, UK Biobank centers and smoking status. Among individuals with frailty status: a grip strength of < 21 kg, a slow walking speed, and exhaustion (more than half the days or nearly every day) increase the risk of developing amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. We believe that studying cachexia and frailty status can be used to help define and treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Innovative zero-valent cobalt decoration on MIL-88 A(Fe)@β-CD for high-efficiency and reusable cr(VI) removal

Abstract Herein, the magnetic ZVCo-MIL-88 A(Fe)@β-CD composite was fabricated via post-synthetic decoration of MIL-88 A(Fe)@β-CD with ZVCo to produce a magnetic efficient adsorbent for Cr(VI) removal. The experimental findings denoted that the ZVCo decoration boosted the adsorption capability of MIL-88 A(Fe)@β-CD, where the adsorption % of Cr(VI) improved from 73.07 to 94.02% after its decoration with 10 wt% of ZVCo. Furthermore, the ZVCo decoration ameliorated the recycling feature of MIL-88 A(Fe)@β-CD since the removal % of Cr(VI) by MIL-88 A(Fe)@β-CD and ZVCo-MIL-88 A(Fe)@β-CD reached 27.24 and 84.98%, respectively. The optimization experiments of the Cr(VI) ions clarified that the higher adsorption % fulfilled 94.02% at pH = 3, using ZVCo-MIL-88 A(Fe)@β-CD dosage = 0.5 g/L, Cr(VI) concentration = 50 mg/L, and at room temperature. Notably, the concentration of the adsorbed Cr(VI) brings off the equilibrium stage within an hour, implying the fast adsorption property of ZVCo-MIL-88 A(Fe)@β-CD. The kinetic and isotherms assessments denoted the contribution of the physical and chemical adsorption pathways in adsorbing the Cr(VI) species onto ZVCo-MIL-88 A(Fe)@β-CD. In addition, the XPS spectra and zeta potential results supposed that the process inside the Cr(VI)/ZVCo-MIL-88 A(Fe)@β-CD system proceeded through reduction reaction, coordination bonds, electrostatic interactions, and pore-filling mechanisms.

Pause before action: Waiting short time as a simple and resource-rational boost

Abstract Many workers today engage in straightforward judgment tasks, increasing the need for interventions to improve accuracy. We propose a resource-rational and psychohygienic intervention, “wait short time”, which introduces a brief pause before displaying alternatives. This pause works as a harmonious triad: it clears the mind of prior judgment bias, restores present attention, and prepares the mind for future judgments; and all this without additional instructions. Based on a resource rationality framework, cognitive costs (e.g., irritation, cognitive conflict) are associated with prolonged thinking because of humans limited cognitive resources. Therefore, there should be an appropriately short thinking time to achieve higher accuracy with minimal workload. We investigated the effectiveness of the proposed intervention both theoretically and empirically. The computer simulations demonstrated that, under assumptions of limited cognitive resources, there was an optimal time at the early stages for maximizing total benefits. The results of behavioral experiment was consistent with the theoretical findings: Providing a waiting time (1 s or 2.5 s) improved judgment accuracy, but cognitive conflicts increased over time and an unnecessarily long time (2.5 s) induced more subjective irritation. Consequently, an appropriate time (1 s) could enhance judgment accuracy with less workload. We discuss the implications and limitations of the proposed intervention.
