Cryptic coral community composition across environmental gradients

Cryptic genetic variation is increasingly being identified in numerous coral species, with prior research indicating that different cryptic genetic lineages can exhibit varied responses to environmental changes. This suggests a potential link between cryptic coral lineages and local environmental conditions. In this study, we investigate how communities of cryptic coral lineages vary along environmental gradients. We began by identifying cryptic genetic lineages within six coral species sampled around St. Croix, USVI based on 2b-RAD sequencing data. We then analyzed associations between the distributions of cryptic lineages across the six coral species (i.e., “cryptic coral community composition”) and ecoregions, or geographically distinct environmental conditions. Our findings show that depth is a more significant predictor of community composition than ecoregions and is the most influential factor among the 40 abiotic variables that characterize ecoregions. These results imply that cryptic coral communities are influenced by both depth and local environmental conditions, although the exact environmental factors driving these patterns remain unknown. Understanding community turnover across a seascape is important to consider when outplanting corals to restore a reef, as locally-adapted lineages may have differential fitness in different environmental conditions.

Machine learning-based anomaly detection and prediction in commercial aircraft using autonomous surveillance data

Regarding the transportation of people, commodities, and other items, aeroplanes are an essential need for society. Despite the generally low danger associated with various modes of transportation, some accidents may occur. The creation of a machine learning model employing data from autonomous-reliant surveillance transmissions is essential for the detection and prediction of commercial aircraft accidents. This research included the development of abnormal categorisation models, assessment of data recognition quality, and detection of anomalies. The research methodology consisted of the following steps: formulation of the problem, selection of data and labelling, construction of the model for prediction, installation, and testing. The data tagging technique was based on the requirements set by the Global Aviation Organisation for business jet-engine aircraft, which expert business pilots then validated. The 93% precision demonstrated an excellent match for the most effective prediction model, linear dipole testing. Furthermore, the "good fit" of the model was verified by its achieved area-under-the-curve ratios of 0.97 for abnormal identification and 0.96 for daily detection.

Abstract Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral infection affecting cloven-hoofed ruminants, leading to significant economic losses. In 2022, Egypt faced a severe outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) caused by the A/Africa/G-IV variant. This study assessed the efficacy of local and imported FMDV vaccines (A Iran-05 lineage) against this new variant using in vitro and in vivo methods. Sera from vaccinated calves showed inadequate cross-protection, with mean r1-values of 0.235 and 0.243 for local and imported vaccines, respectively. Challenge tests indicated low protection levels (20% and 40%) against A/Africa/G-IV compared with A/Iran/05. Current vaccines were deemed ineffective, prompting a formulation update incorporating the variant. The modified vaccine is now deployed in proactive vaccination efforts to address the evolving FMD outbreak.

What determines investment in the Nippon Individual Savings Account? an investigation of Japan’s tax-exempt investment account

In 2014, the Japanese government introduced the Nippon Individual Savings Account (NISA) to encourage tax-exempt investment and asset accumulation. In January 2024, the NISA underwent significant restructuring to boost household savings in financial asset investments. Taking advantage of the launch of the revamped NISA, we analyzed data collected in late 2022 of 95,632 active investors in a leading securities company to explore their preferences in the previous NISA. Notably, investors exhibit a preference for installment NISA over ordinary NISA, indicating an inclination for long-term capital establishment through gradual investments in secure financial assets. Regression analysis reveals that installment NISA investors are typically female, older, married, or divorced, have lower educational qualifications, engage in part-time employment, have higher incomes, display risk aversion, maintain larger asset balances, and adopt long-term perspectives. By contrast, those favoring ordinary NISA tend to be male, young, married, and financially literate and to have lower incomes, higher asset balances, and shorter-term perspectives. This study advocates maintaining both NISA types, increasing the annual and total investment limits, and eliminating tax exemption periods. These measures would be advantageous for tax savings and capital formation. However, a robust financial education campaign is emphasized to encourage individuals to invest in financial assets, breaking the tradition of keeping funds idle.

TMT-based quantitative proteomics reveals the genetic mechanisms of secondary hair follicle development in fine-wool sheep

The development of secondary hair follicles influences the quality of sheep wool. However, the mechanism by which proteins mediate the fetal development of secondary hair follicles remains unknown. In this study, the histomorphology of secondary hair follicles was analyzed over four stages of fetal development (75, 85, 95, and 105 gestational days). TMT-based quantitative proteomics was used to compare the differential protein profiles of skin tissues between consecutive developmental periods (75 versus 85, 85 versus 95, and 95 versus 105 gestational days). We found that the density of secondary hair follicles and the secondary hair follicles/primary hair follicles ratio increased from 85 to 105 gestational days. Bioinformatic analysis identified 238, 35, and 348 differentially expressed proteins in the respective comparison periods. Focal adhesion, ECM−receptor interaction, and the estrogen signaling pathway all played important roles in secondary hair follicle development. COL1A1, THBS3, ITGA6, COL6A1, and THBS4 were identified as potential candidate proteins in the initiation of secondary hair follicles. This study provides valuable proteomics data on secondary hair follicle development and thus has deepened our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying wool quality traits in fine-wool sheep.

Death and disappearance: Measuring racial disparities in mortality and life expectancy among people in state prisons, United States 2000–2014

Background Research on carceral institutions and mortality finds that people in prisons and jails have a high risk of death immediately following release from custody and that while incarcerated, racial disparities in prisoner mortality counter observed death patterns among similarly situated non-incarcerated, demographic groups. Yet, many of these studies rely on data prior to the millennium, during the COVID-19 pandemic, or are relegated to a small number or select group of states. In this paper, we explore changes in mortality and life-expectancy among different demographic groups, before and after the Great Recession, across forty-four states that reported deaths in custody to the federal government between 2000 and 2014. Methods Drawing on a novel dataset created and curated, we calculate standard, age- specific quantities (death rates and life-expectancy) using period lifetable methods, disaggregated by race and sex, across three different periods (2000–2004, 2005–2009, and 2010–2014) for each state. Ordinary least squares regression models with state and year fixed-effects are included to examine state-level factors that may explain differences in prisoner mortality rates between 2000 and 2014. We also benchmark death counts reported to federal agencies with official state reports to cross-validate general mortality patterns. Results Among imprisoned men, age-specific trends in mortality have shifted across the three periods. Following the Great Recession and the push for criminal justice reforms, prisoner mortality dropped significantly and is concentrated at older ages among men during 2010–2014; the shifting pattern of mortality means that men age 30 in 2010–2014 had similar death rates as men in their early 20s during 2000–2004, representing a 7.5 year shift in age-specific mortality rates. Gains in the mortality decline were disproportionately experienced by Non-Hispanic White and Non-Hispanic Black men, with the latter experiencing the greatest gains in life-expectancy of any demographic group. State-level violent crime rates are strongly and positively associated with prison mortality rates across states, net of socioeconomic and political factors. The large and significant disappearance of deaths in prisons from official data reported to federal agencies calls into question the narrowing gap in racial disparities among people in carceral facilities. Conclusions Legal decisions and social policies aimed at reducing mortality may be most effective in the short-run; however, the effects of these policy changes may fadeout over time. Research should clearly discern whether changes in mortality rates across states are due to diminished gains in social policies or increases in the disappearance (or underreporting) of deaths in custody. Understanding how and why gains in survivorship may stall is important for aligning health initiatives with social policy to facilitate maximal and consistent mortality declines for all demographic groups.

Investigation of injury severity level in truck-related crashes at school zones using mixed generalized ordered models

The number of truck registrations is steadily increasing in Korea. The proportion of truck deaths compared to the total number of traffic crashes was 23.9%, which is significantly higher than that of other vehicles. In the field of traffic safety, the Children’s Safety Measures Policy by government aims to enhance the safety of children’s commuting routes by expanding school zones. Nonetheless, truck crashes continue to occur in school zones. Therefore, this study analyzed the factors that affect the severity of truck traffic crashes in school zones in order to contribute to safety improvements. In the study, a distinction is made between various levels of severity to determine the factors that contribute to each level. The generalized ordered models were applied to investigate injury severity levels. Moreover, in order to account for heterogeneity issue, the mixed-effects models with random parameters were used for the analysis. These models were constructed using data collected from school zones over a period of recent ten years. The results showed that crashes occurred at night and on the weekend, as well as human factors such as the age of the victim and the gender of the offender, the types of vehicles involved, and the road type, have been identified as important factors contributing to crash severity. By considering the factors that contribute to truck crashes in school zones, it is anticipated that road safety can be enhanced.

Comparative analysis of microbial contamination in diesel fuels using MALDI-TOF MS

Abstract Microbiological contamination in fuels poses a significant threat to fuel quality, operational safety, and the efficiency of fuel systems. Effective management of microbial risks can extend fuel systems’ lifespan and minimize the environmental footprint of fuel usage. Therefore, we aimed to identify the microbiological contaminants using two MALDI-TOF MS systems (Bruker Daltonik GmbH and Zybio Inc.). Detection and characterization of microbiological contamination in fuels were performed with further validation by 16 S rRNA gene sequencing. Microorganisms collected from three types of diesel fuel were cultured, and fuel samples were analyzed. Significant differences in microbiological contamination were observed between the fuel types, with 272 isolates of bacteria and fungi identified across all fuel samples. Ekodiesel Ultra B0 had the highest number of identified microorganisms. The Zybio system identified 48% of all microorganisms at the species level, whereas the Bruker system identified only 33%. The 16 S rDNA sequencing confirmed proteomic identifications by the MALDI systems with high accuracy. Our study indicates that MALDI-TOF MS technology can effectively assess microbiological contamination in fuels. Integrating MALDI-TOF MS with other molecular techniques could provide a comprehensive view of fuel’s microbial communities.

Larger models yield better results? Streamlined severity classification of ADHD-related concerns using BERT-based knowledge distillation

This work focuses on the efficiency of the knowledge distillation approach in generating a lightweight yet powerful BERT-based model for natural language processing (NLP) applications. After the model creation, we applied the resulting model, LastBERT, to a real-world task—classifying severity levels of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)-related concerns from social media text data. Referring to LastBERT, a customized student BERT model, we significantly lowered model parameters from 110 million BERT base to 29 million-resulting in a model approximately 73.64% smaller. On the General Language Understanding Evaluation (GLUE) benchmark, comprising paraphrase identification, sentiment analysis, and text classification, the student model maintained strong performance across many tasks despite this reduction. The model was also used on a real-world ADHD dataset with an accuracy of 85%, F1 score of 85%, precision of 85%, and recall of 85%. When compared to DistilBERT (66 million parameters) and ClinicalBERT (110 million parameters), LastBERT demonstrated comparable performance, with DistilBERT slightly outperforming it at 87%, and ClinicalBERT achieving 86% across the same metrics. These findings highlight the LastBERT model’s capacity to classify degrees of ADHD severity properly, so it offers a useful tool for mental health professionals to assess and comprehend material produced by users on social networking platforms. The study emphasizes the possibilities of knowledge distillation to produce effective models fit for use in resource-limited conditions, hence advancing NLP and mental health diagnosis. Furthermore underlined by the considerable decrease in model size without appreciable performance loss is the lower computational resources needed for training and deployment, hence facilitating greater applicability. Especially using readily available computational tools like Google Colab and Kaggle Notebooks. This study shows the accessibility and usefulness of advanced NLP methods in pragmatic world applications.
