Intergenerational continuity of protective parenting practices in Dhaka, Bangladesh
Intergenerational transmission of parenting practices is a new dimension of research in Bangladesh. This study used a social cognitive theory framework along with a theory of urbanization and a theory of modernization to examine the continuity of protective parenting practices across two generations. A cross-sectional hermeneutic phenomenological study design was followed from a social constructivist paradigm. Eleven maternal grandmothers (G1) and 11 mothers (G2) were purposively selected from Mirpur, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Data were collected through semi-structured, in-depth interviews. The mothers learned protective parenting practices from the grandmother generation through direct instruction, experience, observation, and modeling within an interaction of various social elements. Protective parenting practices were found to be essential and persisted with some modifications despite modernization. Based on the findings, a process model of intergenerational continuity of parenting practices has been offered, which depicts intergenerational learning within a transitional social context.

New graduate nurses’ experiences with and perceptions of their mental health and well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic: An interpretive description study protocol
Background The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on healthcare workers. Healthcare workplaces are high stress environments placing care providers such as Registered Nurses at high risk for occupational stress injuries related to poor mental health. Currently, healthcare authorities rely on new graduate nurses to help fill gaps in staffing; however, novice nurses are especially vulnerable to workplace illnesses, with the recent pandemic contributing to this risk. Research is needed to understand new graduate nurses’ experiences and perceptions of their mental health and well-being as they transition to practice in the COVID-19 pandemic and the supportive resources they require to assist in contributing to healthy workplaces. Objectives 1) To explore new graduate nurses’ experiences and perceptions of their mental health and well-being as they transitioned to practice during the COVID-19 pandemic in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada; 2) To understand new graduate nurses’ awareness and use of available mental health supports and resources during the COVID-19 pandemic; and 3) To identify strategies and resources to support new graduate nurses’ mental health and well-being as they transitioned to practice during a public health crisis. Methods An interpretive description research methodology will be used to conduct this study. The COnsolidated criteria for REporting Qualitative research (COREQ) checklist will be used to verify both the structure of the study and presentation of findings. Approximately forty semi-structured interviews will be conducted with new graduate nurses who worked in Newfoundland and Labrador in 2020, 2021 or 2022. Data collected will be analyzed using thematic analysis with descriptive statistics used to present demographic information. Results The results of this study will help inform changes to existing workplace programs and contribute to the development of new processes to support new graduate nurses’ mental health and well-being as they transition to practice during a public health crisis such as COVID-19.

Influence in everyday life is limited by institutional cultures: A photo elicitation interview study with frail older persons in Swedish residential aged care facilities
Earlier studies highlighted the significance of engaging in preferred activities to maintain health and well-being after moving into a residential aged care facility. However, there seem to be significant limitations in the range of activities available, often failing to meet frail older persons’ preferences and needs This raises concerns about the adequacy of opportunities for persons living in residential age care facilities to engage in everyday activities and maintain a sense of purpose and well-being. This study aimed to identify and elucidate frail older persons’ opportunities to influence their everyday life in residential aged care facilities. Thirteen frail older persons living in residential aged care facilities were involved by being asked to take photos of their everyday life over the course of one week. Photo-elicitation interviews were then conducted together with a researcher, to narrate the content and meaning of the photos in relation to opportunities to influence their everyday life. The interviews were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. The analysis generated one overarching theme: Influence in everyday life is limited by institutional cultures, illustrating how the facilities functioned as institutions that ruled the older persons’ everyday lives. This is further described in two interrelated core themes: 1) A game of power between older persons and staff with the sub-themes Feelings of inferiority and Infringement of integrity, and 2) The importance of dialogue, with the sub-themes The surrounding as a catalyst for the person’s life-story and Becoming part of a community. Institutional cultures were described to affect everything that occurred in the residential aged care facilities, which meant that the older persons’ preferences and needs were not always met. There is a need to further explore the opportunities for persons living in residential aged care facilities to participate in studies on how to attend to their wishes and needs.

Comparing the performance of a large language model and naive human interviewers in interviewing children about a witnessed mock-event
Purpose The present study compared the performance of a Large Language Model (LLM; ChatGPT) and human interviewers in interviewing children about a mock-event they witnessed. Methods Children aged 6-8 ( N = 78) were randomly assigned to the LLM ( n = 40) or the human interviewer condition ( n = 38). In the experiment, the children were asked to watch a video filmed by the researchers that depicted behavior including elements that could be misinterpreted as abusive in other contexts, and then answer questions posed by either an LLM (presented by a human researcher) or a human interviewer. Results Irrespective of condition, recommended (vs. not recommended) questions elicited more correct information. The LLM posed fewer questions overall, but no difference in the proportion of the questions recommended by the literature. There were no differences between the LLM and human interviewers in unique correct information elicited but questions posed by LLM (vs. humans) elicited more unique correct information per question. LLM (vs. humans) also elicited less false information overall, but there was no difference in false information elicited per question. Conclusions The findings show that the LLM was competent in formulating questions that adhere to best practice guidelines while human interviewers asked more questions following up on the child responses in trying to find out what the children had witnessed. The results indicate LLMs could possibly be used to support child investigative interviewers. However, substantial further investigation is warranted to ascertain the utility of LLMs in more realistic investigative interview settings.

Psychophysiological and psychological responses of touching plant behavior by tactile stimulation according to the foliage type
Urbanization-related stress has spurred interest in natural therapies, such as horticultural therapy, which leverages multisensory exposure to plants to enhance well-being through physical, psychological, and cognitive benefits. This study aimed to measure and compare the psychophysiological and psychological responses to tactile stimuli through plant contact based on the foliage type. Thirty adults (average age: 24.86 ± 2.68) participated in the study, and the foliage was categorized into four groups: soft (e.g., Stachys byzantina, Adiantum raddianum, and Asparagus plumosus var. nanus), smooth (e.g., Peperomia obtusifolia, Ficus benghalensis, and Epipremnum aureum), stiff (e.g., Chamaeshparis thyoides Red Star, Platycladus orientalis, and Cupressus macrocarpa), and rough (e.g., Rhapis excelsa, Nephrolepis cordifolia ‘Duffii’, and Ardisia pusilla ‘Variegata’) plant groups. The participants touched the plants for 90 s, and the concentration of oxyhemoglobin (oxy-Hb) in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) was measured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Additionally, a semantic differential method (SDM) evaluation tool was used to assess the psychological responses of each treatment group. When comparing the four tactile treatment groups (soft, smooth, stiff, and rough), the oxy-Hb concentration in the PFC area was lowest during tactile stimulation of smooth plants and highest during soft plant stimulation. Sex-based comparison of oxy-Hb concentrations showed significant differences in the overall PFC area for all four tactile treatment groups in males (p < 0.001). Specifically, when touching soft plants, the oxy-Hb concentration in females was significantly lower than that in males (p < 0.001). According to the SDM, the tactile stimulation of soft and smooth plants elicited the most relaxation, comfort, and favorable responses (p < 0.001). When touching smooth plants, the oxy-Hb concentration of the participant was the lowest, and according to the SDM, they reported the most soothing response. Summarily, the participants in the smooth plant group exhibited a trend of decreased oxy-Hb concentrations and concurrently experienced a sense of psychological stability. We established those tactile stimuli based on foliage texture resulted in different psychophysiological and psychological responses depending on the plant treatment group and sex.

Enhancement of long-horizon task planning via active and passive modification in large language models
Abstract This study proposes a method for generating complex and long-horizon off-line task plans using large language models (LLMs). Although several studies have been conducted in recent years on robot task planning using LLMs, the planning results tend to be simple, consisting of ten or fewer action commands, depending on the task. In the proposed method, the LLM actively collects missing information by asking questions, and the task plan is upgraded with one dialog example. One of the contributions of this study is a Q&A process in which ambiguity judgment is left to the LLM. By sequentially eliminating ambiguities contained in long-horizon tasks through dialogue, our method increases the amount of information included in movement plans. This study aims to further refine action plans obtained from active modification through dialogue by passive modification, and few studies have addressed these issues for long-horizon robot tasks. In our experiments, we define the number of items in the task planning as information for robot task execution, and we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method through dialogue experiments using a cooking task as the subject. And as a result of the experiment, the amount of information could be increased by the proposed method.
Relationships between community public service facilities and social capital: An exploratory study of Harbin, China
Social capital is closely intertwined with neighborhood environments and facility provisions. It is a vital resource for supporting residents’ happiness and satisfaction. In the context of urban stock development and the concentrated construction of community public service facilities, it remains unclear whether the spontaneous construction of facilities follows a colocation model and how facility-related construction affects residents’ quality of life. In this study, we used a questionnaire survey to analyze social capital, summarizing it into aspects such as community cohesion, social support, community trust, and sense of belonging. Then, we acquired the points of interest for facilities in Harbin, China, computed the Global Colocation Quotient (GCLQ) and Local Colocation Quotient (LCLQ), the proportion of spatial units occupied by facilities, and the Shannon diversity index, and analyzed the patterns. Aged care services, childcare centers, and community cultural services were found to have the strongest mutual attractions. Finally, an ordinary least squares model was constructed. The proportion of spatial units occupied by community public service facilities was closely related to social capital growth. In the relationship between the colocation model and social capital, LCLQ-healthcare showed a negative correlation, LCLQ-aged care and LCLQ-childcare showed a positive correlation, and LCLQ-cultural and sports showed a positive correlation with a sense of community belonging. The geographically weighted regression model indicated significant spatial heterogeneity in how facility-related construction affects social capital. This study offers a foundation and reference for the sustainable planning and development of integrated community public service facilities.

In this work, we present MOLPIPx, a versatile library designed to seamlessly integrate permutationally invariant polynomials with modern machine learning frameworks, enabling the efficient development of linear models, neural networks, and Gaussian process models. These methodologies are widely employed for parameterizing potential energy surfaces across diverse molecular systems. MOLPIPx leverages two powerful automatic differentiation engines—JAX and EnzymeAD-Rust—to facilitate the efficient computation of energy gradients and higher-order derivatives, which are essential for tasks such as force field development and dynamic simulations.
