Engineering twin structures and substitutional dopants in ZnSe0.7Te0.3 anode material for enhanced sodium storage performance

Abstract Compared with lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are an alternative technology for future energy storage due to their abundant resources and economic benefits. Constructing various defects is considered to be a common viable means of improving the performance of sodium storage. However, it is of significance to thoroughly scrutinize the formation mechanism of defects and their effects and transition during the charge–discharge process. Here, twin structures are introduced into ZnSe 0.7 Te 0.3 nanocrystals by doping of Te heteroatoms. The Te dopants are visualized to locate in the lattices of ZnSe by spherical aberration electron microscopy. The formation of twin structures is thermodynamically promoted by Te heteroatoms partially replacing Se based on the theoretical calculation results. Moreover, calculation results show that with the increase of twin boundaries (TBs), the sodium diffusion energy barrier is greatly reduced, which helps the kinetics of sodium ion diffusion. In the connection, the composition and amount of TBs are optimized via tuning the doping level. The combined effect of point defects and twin structures greatly improves the sodium storage performance of ZnSe 0.7 Te 0.3 @C. Our work reveals the mechanism of the point defect on the twin plane defect and systematically investigates their effect on the electrochemical performance.

Antimicrobial control and temporal dynamics of M. plutonius colonization in adult worker honey bees (Apis mellifera)

European foulbrood (EFB) is a stress-associated brood disease affecting honey bee larvae, caused by infection with Melissococcus plutonius. Adult bees are suggested to be a reservoir for this bacterium; however, the duration of M. plutonius colonization of adult bees and its impact on adult bee survival remain inadequately understood. In North America, the only approved antimicrobial for treatment of EFB is oxytetracycline; yet the antimicrobials tylosin and lincomycin are also widely used in beekeeping. The effect of these antimicrobials on M. plutonius colonization of adult bees is unclear. To investigate these unknowns, we infected summer and winter adult worker bees with M. plutonius in the laboratory and treated the infected workers with one of three used antibiotics in beekeeping, in either the laboratory, or within field colonies. We found that worker bees remained persistently infected with M. plutonius for at least 22–38 days in the laboratory and at least 24 days in field colonies. Moreover, M. plutonius ingestion was associated with a significant, dose-dependent decrease in adult worker survival. Antibiotic treatment significantly decreased the M. plutonius load of colonized adult workers but failed to eliminate M. plutonius; still antibiotic treatment improved the survival of bees in the laboratory cages. Taken together, these findings indicate the importance of adult bees as a reservoir of M. plutonius, even in colonies treated with antimicrobials.

Examining the effects of public participation on residents’ trust in local government: The mediating effect of perceived responsiveness

Public participation has been widely acknowledged as a mechanism to enhance residents’ trust in governmental institutions. However, the specific pathways through which public participation influences trust via the perceived responsiveness of local government remain underexplored, particularly in post-war settings such as Mogadishu, Somalia. Hence, this study aimed to explore the impact of public participation on residents’ trust in local authorities in Mogadishu, Somalia, through the perceived responsiveness as a mediator in this relationship within the unique context of a post-war country. Data were collected between January 20 and April 30, 2024. This research employed a quantitative online survey to gather data from 446 inhabitants of Mogadishu City, Somalia. The subjects in the study were recruited using a convenient sampling technique. The proposed model was analyzed using covariance-based structural equation modeling (CB-SEM) in SmartPLS version 4 to examine the hypothesized relationships and mediating effects. The findings indicated that perceived public participation positively and significantly predicted both perceptions of responsiveness and residents’ trust in local authorities. The findings also revealed that perceptions of local government responsiveness were directly, positively, and significantly associated with residents’ trust in the city administration. The results ultimately indicated a positive partial mediation effect of perceived local government responsiveness on the association between public participation and residents’ trust in city administration. This study addresses a lacuna in the literature by exploring how perceived public participation influences residents’ trust in city authorities in a post-conflict setting, particularly in Somalia. This underscores the significance of perceived responsiveness as a mediator in enhancing residents’ trust, providing invaluable insights for policymakers and local government officials.

Joint dynamics and efficient initialization techniques for potentials and currents in the P2D battery model

Abstract Solving the physics-based pseudo-two-dimensional (P2D) models involves using iterative methods, such as the Newton or the shooting method to solve a boundary condition problem. To use these iterative methods effectively, it is imperative to transform the boundary condition problem into an initial condition problem. This, in turn, necessitates initializing certain parameters, often done by providing guess values. The choice of these initial guess values can significantly impact convergence speed. This study proposes an analytically derived linear solution for initializing these conditions as an approximate guess. The proposed approach is not only computationally efficient, enhancing convergence speed and overall performance of the P2D model, but also straightforward to implement, making it a practical solution.

Evaluation of visual function within the central 10 degrees using IMOvifa™ 24plus (1-2)

Purpose The IMOvifa™ perimeter with a 24plus (1-2) testing mode has additional measurement points within the central 10 degrees, which may help evaluate the visual field within this area. Here, we comparatively evaluated the IMOvifa™ 24plus (1-2) and HFA 10-2 for the first time. Methods We included 30 patients (48 eyes) who underwent HFA 24-2 Swedish Interactive Threshold Algorithm Standard and IMOvifa™ 24plus (1-2) Ambient Interactive Zippy Estimated tests on the same day and HFA 10-2 within six months. We used Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient to analyze the mean deviation (MD) and pattern standard deviation (PSD) between HFA 10-2 and IMOvifa™. The central 10-degree visual field was divided into four sectors, and concordance of visual field defects between IMOvifa™ 24plus (1-2) and HFA 10-2 was evaluated using kappa analysis. Additionally, all sectors showing a sensitivity of 0 dB on the HFA 24-2 were assessed for the presence and agreement of residual visual field in HFA 10-2 and IMOvifa™ 24plus (1-2). Results The MD (0.843/0.804) and PSD (0.852/0.763) of IMOvifa™ 24plus (1-2) and HFA 24-2 correlated strongly with those of HFA 10-2. Regarding the ability to detect visual field defects within the central 10 degrees, agreement with HFA 10-2 was κ = 0.715 (0.611,0.819) and 0.754 (0.654,0.854) for IMOvifa™ 24plus (1-2) and HFA 24-2, respectively. In the evaluation of residual visual field, IMOvifa™ 24plus (1-2) detected residual visual function in 100% of cases where HFA 10-2 indicated residual function. Conclusion The IMOvifa™ 24plus (1-2) may have a higher ability to detect defects in certain areas of the visual field, compared with HFA 24-2, and may also detect residual visual function. However, the IMOvifa™ 24plus (1-2) is difficult to substitute for the 10-2 test, as the 10-2 test is necessary for evaluating visual field defects within the central 10 degrees.

The impact of China pilot carbon market policy on electricity carbon emissions

Abstract The electric power industry is the pillar of the national economy but also the largest carbon emission sector in China, facing great pressure to reduce emissions. Existing research often lacks the analysis of the carbon market on electricity carbon emission reduction. Based on the panel data of 30 provinces (cities) in China from 2003 to 2020, we combine the multi-period difference-in-differences model with the spatial Durbin model to explore the effectiveness of the pilot carbon market policy on electricity carbon emission reduction, the mechanism of its role, and its spatial spillover effect. The results show that: (1) The carbon market policy in the electric power industry can effectively play the carbon emission reduction effect, but its spatial spillover effect exists in the carbon emission transfer phenomenon to weaken the overall emission reduction effect. (2) The pilot carbon market policy mainly promotes carbon emission reduction in the power industry by strengthening government intervention and reducing power energy consumption, and the role of R&D innovation intensity has not yet been substantially realized. (3) The impact of pilot carbon market policies on electricity carbon emission reduction varies according to the degree of emphasis on environmental governance and regional features. The conclusion provides feasible suggestions for policymakers to strengthen the mechanism design of the carbon market in the power industry, which is of great significance for realizing the goal of “double carbon.”

How personality traits influence impulsive buying through the sequential mediation of family dynamics and self control

Abstract The present investigates how personality traits influence impulsive buying (IB) among college students, emphasizing the mediating effects of family dynamics and self-control. Using a structural equation model, we analyzed responses from 578 college students in Gansu Province, China to explore the relationship between the Big Five personality traits, family dynamics, self-control, and IB tendencies. Neuroticism and extroversion are positively associated with IB, whereas conscientiousness is negatively associated with it. Family dynamics and self-control significantly mediate the relationship between personality traits and IB. This study reveals the complex interplay between individual personality traits and external factors in IB, and suggests a focus on family-specific and self-regulatory interventions. The findings provide educators and policymakers with practical strategies aimed at strengthening family relationships and self-control to curb IB behavior among youth. Furthermore, this study offers a novel perspective on IB by integrating personality traits, family dynamics, and self-control, thereby contributing valuable insights to the literature on consumer behavior as well as strategies to mitigate financial risk among young consumers.

Calculation of steel corrosion rate of reinforced concrete slab based on rust expansion crack

This study aims to develop a refined calculation model that incorporates the effects of distributed reinforcement on crack propagation, validated through experimental and theoretical analysis, to improve the accuracy and applicability of nondestructive corrosion assessments. In this paper, two reinforced concrete slabs were made to consider the influence of distributed reinforcement on the corrosion process of main reinforcement.An accelerated surface cracking method was used, employing reinforcement electrification. This approach tested the relationship between crack width in reinforced concrete slabs and the corrosion rate of main reinforcement. On the basis of the existing calculation model of the relationship between the corrosion rate of reinforcement and the width of concrete surface crack, combined with the development mechanism of concrete surface crack caused by the corrosion expansion of main reinforcement under the lateral constraint conditions, a calculation model of the surface crack width of reinforced concrete slab and the corrosion rate of reinforcement is established. The comparison shows that the calculation results of the model in this paper can better reflect the test rules, and provide a reference for nondestructive quantitative detection of reinforcement corrosion in concrete structures.
