Apple varieties, diseases, and distinguishing between fresh and rotten through deep learning approaches

Apples are one of the most productive fruits in the world, in addition to their nutritional and health advantages for humans. Even with the continuous development of AI in agriculture in general and apples in particular, automated systems continue to encounter challenges identifying rotten fruit and variations within the same apple category, as well as similarity in type, color, and shape of different fruit varieties. These issues, in addition to apple diseases, substantially impact the economy, productivity, and marketing quality. In this paper, we first provide a novel comprehensive collection named Apple Fruit Varieties Collection (AFVC) with 29,750 images through 85 classes. Second, we distinguish fresh and rotten apples with Apple Fruit Quality Categorization (AFQC), which has 2,320 photos. Third, an Apple Diseases Extensive Collection (ADEC), comprised of 2,976 images with seven classes, was offered. Fourth, following the state of the art, we develop an Optimized Apple Orchard Model (OAOM) with a new loss function named measured focal cross-entropy (MFCE), which assists in improving the proposed model’s efficiency. The proposed OAOM gives the highest performance for apple varieties identification with AFVC; accuracy was 93.85%. For the apples rotten recognition with AFQC, accuracy was 98.28%. For the identification of the diseases via ADEC, it was 99.66%. OAOM works with high efficiency and outperforms the baselines. The suggested technique boosts apple system automation with numerous duties and outstanding effectiveness. This research benefits the growth of apple’s robotic vision, development policies, automatic sorting systems, and decision-making enhancement.

Disparities in physician compensation for breast and prostate cancer operations

The objective of this study was to determine whether the Center for Medicare and Medicaid services (CMS) pays more relative value units (RVUs) for prostatectomies than mastectomies across different treatment modalities. The RVU model is public information, subject to review every 5 years at minimum and has implications directly or indirectly to every medical center in the United States. These findings shed light on how the CMS values the two most prominent cancers among men and women: breast cancer and prostate cancer. An economic evaluation was conducted to appraise physician compensation for treating breast cancer vs prostate cancer. Work RVUs, malpractice RVUs, and practice expense RVUs were collected from the CMS’ 2023 Physician Fee Scheduler. The total operative times, including time spent in pre-op consultations and follow ups, used by the RVU update committee to create these values were collected from the CMS’ 2023 Final Rule Physician Work Times. Surgical oncologists treating breast cancer were paid an average of 15.45 RVUs per mastectomy and 2.74 per hour. The average work RVUs paid for a prostatectomy was 24.64 and 3.06 per hour. The average work RVUs paid for an axillary lymph node removal was 12.29 and 2.94 per hour. The average work RVUs paid for a pelvic lymphadenectomy was 15.87 and 3.04 per hour. The data assimilated in this study acts to illustrate the discrepancy between work RVUs for breast cancer and prostate cancer operations.

Comparison of visual performance between monofocal and rotationally asymmetric refractive intraocular lenses

We compared the visual performance of a monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) (ZCB00) and a rotationally asymmetric refractive IOL with +1.5 diopters near addition (Lentis Comfort LS-313 MF15) by investigating the ten-week postoperative parameters of both eyes of cataract patients who underwent bilateral implantation with one of the two IOLs within three months between 2011 and 2019. A total of 1352 eyes of 676 patients were enrolled; the ZCB00 group comprised 904 eyes of 452 patients (72.3 ± 6.8 years; females/males, 268/184), and the LS-313 MF15 group included 448 eyes of 224 patients (73.6 ± 7.0 years; females/males, 125/99). Comparisons were made with a linear mixed-effects model, strictly adjusting for sex, age, subjective refraction spherical equivalent, subjective refraction cylinder, corneal astigmatism, axial length, corneal higher-order aberrations, and pupil diameter to ensure statistical validity. The corrected distance visual acuity was significantly better, and most of the higher-order aberrations were significantly smaller in the ZCB00 group (p < 0.00068, Wald test). Contrast sensitivity with glare (6.3 degrees) and spectacle independence (near) were significantly better in the LS-313 MF15 group (p < 0.00068, Wald test).

Trajectories of illness perceptions in patients with kidney disease receiving dialysis: Relationship with psychological and physical symptoms

Illness perceptions play an important role in outcomes for patients with advanced kidney failure receiving dialysis, though they are rarely examined over a sustained period and in distinct cultural settings. This observational cohort study used a prospective longitudinal design to examine how illness perceptions change overtime. It also considered whether these trajectories are related to patient experience of psychological and physical symptoms including those associated with dialysis, and depressive mood. Data were collected from 181 patients recruited from four dialysis centres in Northern Cyprus between 2020–2021. There were 124 patients receiving dialysis (91.1% haemodialysis) and 57 patients in the pre-dialysis phase at baseline. Self-reported measures including the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, and Dialysis Symptom Index, were completed at the start (time 1) of the study and then again at six months (Time 2) and at 12 months (Time 3) using versions validated in the local language (Turkish). Multilevel Models (MLM) for repeated measures were used to understand trajectories of illness perceptions over the 12-months of follow-up. On average, perceptions of consequences and emotional response to illness decreased over a one-year period. Depressive symptoms and dialysis symptom burden were found to be relatively stable over the same period. However, patients who reported higher perceptions of illness consequences and emotional response at baseline were more likely to report greater depressive symptoms at 12 months. Similarly, those already receiving dialysis who reported greater emotional response and lower levels of personal control at baseline were more likely to continue to report higher dialysis symptom burden at 12 months. The findings underscore the importance of illness perceptions as a framework to identify patients who may benefit from support, importantly offering an anchor for intervention design. Establishing cultural acceptability of such an approach will be an important next step.

Use the rating of perceived exertion to evaluate load in collegiate male soccer player, validity and influencing factors

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of session rating of perceived exertion (SRPE) in collegiate male soccer players and to identify the factors that influence SRPE, with the aim of developing a predictive model. Fifteen Chinese collegiate soccer players (age 19.6 ± 0.8 y, height 179.1 ± 5.4 cm, weight 70.8 ± 4.9 kg, body mass index 22.1 ± 1.7 kg/m2, body fat 10.9 ± 2.3%, heart rate rest 56.6 ± 8.0, heart rate max 194.9 ± 7.3) participated in the study. Global position system (GPS) wearable devices, pre-session well-being questionnaire [sleep, fatigue, delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), stress and energy] and SRPE was carried out to collect training load (TL) and well-being variable, 977 observations from training and competition during 7 months were recorded. Moderate to very large correlations were found between SRPE and heart rate-based load Banister TRIMP (0.58 ± 0.14, 0.38 ≤ r ≤ 0.78, p < 0.05) and Edwards TL (0.59 ± 0.14, 0.37 ≤ r ≤ 0.83, p < 0.05). The stepwise multiple regression show that in all courses, total distance (TD), fatigue, Edwards TL, sleep, sprint distance (> 24 km/h), inertial movement analysis (IMA) can explain 32.4% of the adjusted R2 of SRPE (y = − 152.672 + 0.034 TD + 49.101 Fatigue + 0.834 Edwards TL + 36.012 sleep + 0.538 SD + 0.871 IMA), and the variance inflation factors are 2.470, 1.011, 2.386, 1.011, 1.181, 1.143 respectively. Moderate to very large correlations demonstrate that SRPE is an effective method for quantifying collegiate male soccer players. Multiple regression model showed that internal load, external load and pre-training well-being status affect SRPE, demonstrating that SRPE is a global method for assessing internal load in collegiate male soccer players.

Research on coupling risk assessment method of industrialized urban area based on information diffusion and extension grey clustering model

The regional accident risk in industrialized towns is a critical foundation for optimizing urban industrial layouts and dynamically managing regional risks. However, assessing production safety risks in urban areas often encounters challenges such as incomplete information and fuzzy index judgments due to limited small-sample data. This study proposes a dynamic control model for coupling risks in industrialized urban areas, integrating system engineering principles and focusing on two dimensions: the inherent risk of production safety accidents and the vulnerability of regional safety protection systems. For inherent risk analysis, the fuzzy set theory treats probability distribution as a mapping from events to probabilities. A set-valued fuzzy mathematics approach is employed to process single sample points, and an information diffusion model compensates for data deficiencies by appropriately expanding incomplete information. An extension grey clustering vulnerability assessment model is developed for vulnerability analysis, combining extension theory with grey clustering correlation functions. This model calculates the comprehensive correlation degree between the assessment object and vulnerability levels, thereby evaluating the safety system’s capacity to withstand accident impacts. Application of the model to an urban district demonstrates that while inherent risks are widespread in industrialized regions, the safety protection systems exhibit minimal vulnerability and robust resilience. These findings align with observed conditions and offer a scientific basis for effectively managing production safety risks in urban areas.

Combining meta reinforcement learning with neural plasticity mechanisms for improved AI performance

This research explores the potential of combining Meta Reinforcement Learning (MRL) with Spike-Timing-Dependent Plasticity (STDP) to enhance the performance and adaptability of AI agents in Atari game settings. Our methodology leverages MRL to swiftly adjust agent strategies across a range of games, while STDP fine-tunes synaptic weights based on neuronal spike timings, which in turn improves learning efficiency and decision-making under changing conditions. A series of experiments were conducted with standard Atari games to compare the hybrid MRL-STDP model against baseline models using traditional reinforcement learning techniques like Q-learning and Deep Q-Networks. Various performance metrics, including learning speed, adaptability, and cross-game generalization, were evaluated. The results show that the MRL-STDP approach significantly accelerates the agent’s ability to reach competitive performance levels, with a 40% boost in learning efficiency and a 35% increase in adaptability over conventional models.

Incidence of intensive care unit acquired weakness in critically ill patients treated with kidney replacement therapy: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Background This study assesses the incidence of ICU-acquired weakness (ICUAW) among patients using kidney replacement therapy (KRT) and explores the uncertain relationship between KRT and ICUAW in critically ill adult patients. Methods A comprehensive search was conducted across PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials up to June 10, 2024. Inclusion criteria encompassed randomized controlled trials (RCTs), as well as prospective and retrospective cohort studies that examined the correlation between KRT and ICUAW in adult ICU patients. Heterogeneity was evaluated using the χ² and I² statistics. Publication bias was assessed qualitatively via funnel plots and quantitatively using Begg’s and Egger’s tests. Results A total of twelve cohort studies involving 2275 adult patients were included, with no RCTs meeting the criteria. The overall incidence of ICUAW was 49.5% in patients using KRT, compared to 34.8% in non-KRT controls. These studies collectively demonstrated a statistically significant association between KRT and a higher incidence of ICUAW (OR, 2.12; 95% CI, 1.34–3.34). Subgroup and sensitivity analyses reinforced this association, particularly in studies involving patients with clinical weakness, large sample sizes, and low risk of bias. However, studies focused on patients with abnormal electrophysiology and small sample sizes did not show this correlation. Despite the substantial findings, statistical heterogeneity was present. No significant publication bias was detected. Conclusion This study highlights a significant association between KRT and an increased incidence of developing ICUAW.
