Primary determinants of water yield services in arid NW China: An empirical analysis of Gansu Province
Water yield services (WYs) play a crucial role in the hydrological cycle and water resource allocation in terrestrial ecosystems. Therefore, modeling their dynamic variation characteristics and driving mechanisms is of extensive practical significance in guiding ecological management practices in arid and semi-arid regions. Gansu Province is located in the heart of northern China. It is rich in wildlife resources and has numerous ecological reserves, whose ecological transitions profoundly affect the northern region and the ecological security at the national scale. In recent years, Gansu Province has encountered the severe challenge of water resources. It is enduring pollution and a severe imbalance between supply and demand owing to the twofold influence of global warming trends and high-intensity human activities. Based on this, this study quantitatively analyzed the characteristics of the dynamic variation in WYs in Gansu Province using the InVEST model and revealed the key factors driving this dynamic variation. The results show that the WYs in Gansu Province fluctuated between 278.37 and 381.96 mm during 2000–2022, with an average WY of 61.09 mm. The rate of spatial variation in WYs was mainly concentrated between −2 and 5 mm/yr and increased at a rate of 1.41 mm/yr. The spatial heterogeneity of WYs was differentiated significantly by natural and socio-economic influences, with precipitation explaining the highest degree of spatial heterogeneity in WYs (q = 0.49–0.62) and the strongest interaction between precipitation and actual evapotranspiration (q = 0.94). Meanwhile, the interaction between precipitation and land use increased from 0.68 in 2000 to 0.75 in 2022. Moreover, the explanatory power of the interaction between the two showed an increasing trend. In addition, the correlations between each driver and alterations in the WYs showed spatial variations, and the characteristics of each factor differed at different spatial scales. The GDP, proportion of urban construction land, and proportion of arable land area had significant negative spatial effects on WYs. Meanwhile, precipitation had a positive spatial effect on WYs.

Features and signals in precocious citation impact: A meta-research study
The current analysis aimed to evaluate the profiles of scientists who reach top citation impact in a very short time once they start publishing. Precocious citation impact was defined as rising to become a top-cited scientist within t ≤ 8 years after the first publication year. Ultra-precocious citation impact was defined similarly for t ≤ 5 years. Top-cited authors included those in the top-2% of a previously validated composite citation indicator across 174 subfields of science or in the top-100,000 authors of that composite citation indicator across all science based on Scopus. Annual data between 2017 and 2023 show a strong increase over time, with 469 precocious and 66 ultra-precocious citation impact author profiles in 2023. In-depth assessment of validated ultra-precocious scientists in 2023, showed significantly higher frequency of less developed country affiliation; clustering in 4 high-risk subfields; high self-citations for their field; being top-cited only when self-citations were included; high citations to citing papers ratio for their field; extreme publishing behavior; extreme citation orchestration metric c/h2; and high percentage of citations given to first-authored papers compared with all top-cited authors (p < 0.005 for all signals). The 17 ultra-precocious citation impact authors in the 2017–2020 top-cited lists who had retractions showed on average 4.1 of these 8 signal indicators at the time they entered the top-cited list. In conclusion, while some authors with precocious citation impact may be stellar scientists, others probably herald massive manipulative or fraudulent behaviors infiltrating the scientific literature.

Assessment of implementation challenges of electronic medical record in Yekatit 12 hospital medical college
Background The implementing challenges of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) refer to the difficulties and obstacles faced by healthcare organizations during the process of implementing and integrating electronic medical record systems into their operations. Research indicates that understanding the specific obstacles faced by healthcare organizations in implementing EMR is crucial for effective intervention strategies. Therefore, this study aims at assessing the implementation challenges of EMR. Methods A cross sectional study design with quantitative and qualitative approach was employed in Yekatit 12 hospital medical college (Y12HMC). A structured and pre-tested questionnaire was used to analyse socio-demographics, knowledge, perceived benefits and usefulness, and challenges of EMR implementation. Descriptive statistics was employed to summarise the quantitative data. Qualitative data was thematically presented. Result In this study 389 participants were surveyed with a response rate of 92.2%. Of the respondents, 54.4% had 1–5 service years, and 45% had no prior EMR system training. According to 89.7% of participants EMR improves practice productivity, and more secure than paper-based systems for storing patient records. Poor project management (62%), less eye contact with clients (57.6%), low users acceptance (55%), slow EMR system (45%), long waiting time for consultation (42.7%), lack of training and follow up (38%), high cost for wrong/repeated lab request (35.5%) and loss of privacy (33.2%) are challenges of implementation of EMR. The majority of the participants hold favorable perceptions and willing to use the system. Conclusion The most common challenges for EMR implementation in Y12HMC are poor project management, less eye contact by physicians with clients, low users acceptance, lack of training and follow up and long waiting time for consultation. The majority of participants hold favorable perceptions and willing to use the system.

3D reconstruction from 2D multi-view dental 2D images based on EfficientNetB0 model
Abstract Dental diseases are the primary cause of oral health concerns around the world, affecting millions of people. Therefore, recent developments in imaging technologies have transformed the detection and treatment of oral problems. Applying three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction from two-dimensional (2D) dental images, such as X-rays, is a potential development field. 3D reconstruction technology converts real-world goals into mathematical models that are compatible with computer logic expressions. It’s been commonly used in dentistry. Particularly for patients with a vomiting reflex, 3D imaging techniques minimize patient discomfort and shorten the length of the examination or treatment. Therefore, this research paper proposes a new 3D reconstruction model from 2D multi-view dental images. The proposed framework consists of three stages. The first stage is the encoder stage, which extracts meaningful features from the 2D images. The second stage captures spatial and semantic information essential for the reconstruction task. The third stage is recurrence, which uses 3D long short-term memory (LSTM). It ensures that the information from various viewpoints is effectively integrated to produce a coherent representation of the 3D structure and decoder stage to translate the aggregated features from the LSTM into a fully reconstructed 3D model. When the proposed model was tested on the ShapeNet dataset, the suggested model achieved a maximum intersection over union (IoU) of 89.98% and an F1_score of 94.11%. A special case of 3D reconstruction, a dental dataset, has been created with the same structure as the ShapeNet dataset to evaluate our system. The proposed approach’s results show promising accomplishments compared to many state-of-the-art approaches, and they motivate the authors to make plans for further improvement.
Dance behaviour in cockatoos: Implications for cognitive processes and welfare
Parrots (Aves, Psittaciformes) in captivity have been reported to show dance behaviour in response to music, which may involve complex cognitive processes including imitation, vocal learning and entrainment. Dance behaviour in parrots may be indicative of a positive welfare state raising the possibility of using music as a form of environmental enrichment. In this study we studied dance behaviour in cockatoos (Cacatuidae) through an online video study and a playback experiment. First, we identified and defined cockatoo dance movements to music from videos posted on social media to reveal the extent of this behaviour in different species. Second, to test whether music elicited dance behaviour we conducted a preliminary playback experiment on captive cockatoos, whereby birds were presented with periods of music playback, no audio playback and an audio podcast. From 45 online videos representing five different cockatoo species we identified and described 17 new dance movements. We also found 17 rare movements observed in only one bird and not previously reported in the literature, which in many cases consisted of combinations of different movements. A cluster analysis indicated that inter-species similarities in dance movements were not related to phylogenetic relatedness. In the playback study, which involved zoo-housed male-female pairs of three species of cockatoos, all birds in all treatments showed dance behaviour but there was no significant effect of treatment on the probability of showing dancing behaviour. We conclude that dance behaviour in cockatoos is composed of a wide range of different movements and further research would be beneficial to determine if music can trigger dance in captive birds and serve as a form of environmental enrichment.

Site-specific growth dynamics and yield patterns in Populus deltoides against edaphic variability over seven age-gradations
Most studies are focusing on general soil fertility effects on poplar growth rather than site-specific variations in edaphic factors considering the soil texture and profile as factors on poplar productivity and increments with age. Poplar (Populus deltoides Marsh.) grown in three different types of soil and across seven age-gradations were evaluated for growth behaviour and productivity pattern. We selected three nearby; even-aged poplar stands (PS1 with loamy sand, PS2 with silt loam, and PS3 with sandy loam texture) from poplar plantations, each with varying edaphic and similar agrometeorological conditions. We collected a composite soil sample for each transect at three distinct soil depths (0–30, 30–60, and 60–90 cm) and determined the physicochemical characteristics of the soil. Significant differences in soil texture and characteristics were noted across the three poplar stands (PS1, PS2 and PS3) due to variations in soil particle composition with depth. PS2 had more silt and clay with higher electrical conductivity (EC) and saturated hydraulic conductivity (SHC), while PS1 was richer in phosphorus, and PS3 had sandy textures and higher organic matter content. Early growth (height and diameter at breast height) was highest in PS3 but transitioned to PS2 after the fifth year. Leaf area, crown spread, timber weight, and total biomass also peaked in PS2 across age gradations. Current Annual Increment (CAI) values for tree growth variables increased initially but declined after the third age-gradation. For pulpwood, biomass productivity was 9.28% higher than that of PS2 and 29.15% higher than that of PS1, while PS2’s productivity was 15.60% higher than that of PS3 and 45.81% higher than that of PS1 due to favorable texture and nutrient retention required for poplars. The study found the highest productivity (42.40 m³ha ⁻ ¹yr ⁻ ¹) in PS3 during a 5-year cycle, but PS2 excelled in subsequent years due to consistent nutrient availability. Thus, optimal growth was observed in soils with a balanced composition of sand (75–80%), silt (6–8%), and clay (13–17%). Soil organic carbon and phosphorus showed strong positive correlations with timber weight and growth parameters. The findings underscore the need for tailored management practices, including soil preparation before planting followed by precise fertigation to optimize the productivity of poplar plantations.

Do skin bacteriostatic agents reduce acute radiodermatitis in breast cancer patients? A prospective interventional study
Objective Radiodermatitis is the most prevalent complication in breast cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy. Emerging evidence suggests a correlation between radiodermatitis and Staphylococcus aureus colonization. The aim of our study was to explore whether the application of skin bacteriostatic agents (a sterile liquid dressing containing fucoidan oligosaccharides with anti-Staphylococcus aureus activity) could mitigate acute radiodermatitis in breast cancer patients. Methods We conducted a prospective interventional study, enrolling breast cancer patients receiving outpatient radiotherapy at our institution from July 1, 2023, to January 31, 2024. Patients were divided into an experimental group and a control group based on the usage of skin bacteriostatic agents. The first outcome was evaluated using the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) criteria. The second outcome was the patient’s reported symptoms of radiodermatitis, which included itching, pain, tightness, burning and swelling. The third outcome was whether the usage of skin bacteriostatic agents delayed the onset of self-reported radiodermatitis symptoms. Results A total of 183 patients were enrolled, comprising 101 breast-conserving patients (21 in the experimental group, 80 in the control group); and 82 mastectomy patients (26 in the experimental group, 56 in the control group). The experimental group showed a significantly lower grade of radiodermatitis compared to the control group in both breast-conserving and mastectomy patients (P < 0.05). Patient-reported symptoms of radiodermatitis included itching (54.6%), pain (48.1%), tightness (21.9%), burning (11.5%), and swelling (17.5%), but there was no difference between the two groups and onset in radiodermatitis. Further analysis indicated that hypofractionated radiotherapy could reduce the severity of radiodermatitis and itchiness. Conclusion Skin bacteriostatic agents used during radiotherapy can reduce the severity of radiodermatitis in breast cancer patients, although it does not alleviate self-reported symptoms of dermatitis. Hypofractionated radiotherapy is recommended to reduce the severity of radiodermatitis.
