Spatial–temporal evolution and influencing factors of urban–rural economic circulation in China’s agricultural areas: A case study of Jianghan Plain

Urban–rural economic circulation (UREC) is an important part of the domestic economic circulation and an important element in the construction of the new development paradigm of “dual circulation” in China today. Currently, the uneven development of UREC in China threatens the sustainable development of the urban–rural economy. Quantitative research on UREC is lacking in the academic community. As a result, research at the national level cannot easily provide guidance in agricultural regions. Therefore, theoretical and case-based empirical research on UREC must be carried out urgently. This study proposes a theoretical framework and a measurement index system for UREC. It uses the Jianghan Plain, a traditional agricultural growing area in China, as a case study. It also uses the entropy method and stepwise regression analysis to study the spatiotemporal evolution of UREC and the influencing factors from 2013 to 2020. Results show that, from 2013 to 2020, the UREC index of the Jianghan Plain grew year by year, and the spatial difference increased. Regional administrative power and urban–rural socioeconomic development levels had a significant impact on UREC in the Jianghan Plain, with general public budget expenditures having the greatest positive impact.

From diverticulum to diagnosis: The distinctive role of Endoscopic Ultrasonography in Lemmel syndrome

Background and aim Lemmel syndrome is a rare cause of obstructive jaundice, induced by periampullary diverticulum(PAD). Endoscopic Ultrasonography(EUS) is helpful in detecting PAD and differentiating the obstruction cause in Lemmel syndrome by exposing the detail of ampulla structure and measuring the dilatation of common bile duct and pancreatic duct. Materials and methods Nineteen patients diagnosed Lemmel syndrome by EUS in our institute between January 1, 2019 to April 30, 2024 were enrolled. Their demographics, laboratory and imaging data were analyzed. Results The patients diagnosed with Lemmel syndrome were mostly elder male with the average age of 68.8 ± 2.4 years. We found Lemmel syndrome patients most present with a dilatation in middle and upper segments of common bile duct. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP), abdominal computed tomography (CT) and upper abdominal enhanced MR were all failed to diagnose Lemmel syndrome. Besides, a higher serum level of alkaline phosphatase was predominant in those complicating with cholecystitis or cholecystolithiasis than those without complications. Conclusions Similar with non-invasive imaging examination, EUS was capable of confirming the diagnosis of Lemmel syndrome, evaluating PAD and pancreaticobiliary duct as well as periampullary structure. EUS could be a useful investigate method to distinguish Lemmel syndrome for patients with unexplained dilated common bile duct or jaundice.

Morphological characterization of indigenous goats in selected districts of West Shewa Zone, Oromia regional State, Ethiopia

This study was conducted in the West Shewa Zone to identify the morphological characteristics of the indigenous goat population. Data were collected from 519 goats, including body measurements and observations. Qualitative data were analyzed descriptively, while quantitative data were analyzed using the GLM procedure. The average flock size per household was 11.30 ± 7.17, with the Ejere district having the largest flocks compared to other districts. Significant differences were observed in most qualitative traits among the goat populations across the four districts. These traits included horn presence, beard presence, coat color pattern, coat hair type, horn shape, head profile, horn orientation, and ear orientation. The majority of goats displayed a patchy coat color, smooth and short hair, straight horn shape, backward horn orientation, straight head profile, and horizontal ear orientation. The overall means for body weight, body length, heart girth, wither height, pelvic height, rump length, rump width, horn length, and ear length were 29.03 ± 3.91 kg, 65.09 ± 3.60 cm, 70.87 ± 3.84 cm, 65.97 ± 3.75 cm, 68.23 ± 3.35 cm, 19.27 ± 2.11 cm, 13.75 ± 1.65 cm, 10.89 ± 2.77, and 14.00 ± 1.37 cm, respectively. Significant differences (p < 0.05) in most body measurements were observed based on sex, and age. In the interaction, some of them were found to be significant differences, while only a few measurements showed differences between districts. Body weight and heart girth exhibited a stronger correlation than other linear body measurements. For female goats, heart girth, body length, and pelvic height significantly influenced body weight predictions, whereas for male goats, only heart girth was a relevant measurement. In conclusion, the observed variations in most morphological traits indicate the necessity of developing selective breeding strategies to enhance economically significant traits in goat farming.

The impact of loneliness on depression, mental health, and physical well-being

Background Loneliness is a growing public health concern, with substantial implications for mental and physical health. Despite increasing attention, it remains an underrecognized determinant of health outcomes in population-based research. Objective This study evaluates the association between loneliness and key health outcomes, including depression diagnosis, poor mental health days, and poor physical health days, using a nationally representative sample. Methods We analyzed Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data from 2016 to 2023. Loneliness was measured with the question, “How often do you feel lonely?” and categorized into five levels: Always, Usually, Sometimes, Rarely, and Never. We estimated average treatment effects (ATE) using inverse probability weighting (IPW), adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics and incorporating BRFSS sampling weights and fixed effects for state, and year. Results The study included 47,318 individuals, predominantly White (73.3%), female (62.1%), and aged 18–64 years (72.1%). Over 80% of participants reported some degree of loneliness. Compared to those who reported “Never” being lonely, individuals who reported being “Always” lonely had a significantly higher predicted probability of depression (50.2% vs. 9.7%, ATE = +40.5 percentage points, p &lt; 0.001), 10.9 more poor mental health days, and 5.0 more poor physical health days per month (all p &lt; 0.001). Disparities were evident across sex, race/ethnicity, and age. Women consistently reported more poor mental health days than men across most loneliness levels. Black individuals reporting loneliness had significantly lower probabilities of depression and fewer poor mental health days than White peers. Older adults (&gt;64) experienced more poor physical health days than younger adults across all loneliness categories. Conclusion Loneliness is a strong and independent predictor of depression and poor health outcomes. Public health interventions aimed at addressing loneliness—especially among high-risk subgroups—are critical to improving mental and physical well-being at the population level.

Prognostic impacts of left ventricular strain in hemodialytic patients with preserved left ventricular systolic function

Abstract Left ventricular dysfunction is a known risk factor for morbidity and mortality in hemodialysis patients. The prognostic value of left ventricular global longitudinal strain (LV GLS) among those with preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) remains uncertain. Subjects with end-stage renal disease initiated hemodialysis at Taipei Veteran General Hospital between 2015 and 2018 were registered. All participants received annually echocardiographic studies thereafter. Left ventricular end-systolic volume (LVESV), end-diastolic volume (LVEDV) and internal diameter in systole (LVIDs), LVEF, and LV GLS were measured. A LV GLS of &gt; – 15.9% was defined as reduced LV GLS. Clinical outcomes of mortality and hospitalization for heart failure (HHF) were followed. A total of 319 patients with preserved LVEF (66.3 ± 15.1 years, 48.6% men) were recruited in the study. Subjects with reduced LV GLS had more coronary artery disease (CAD), higher LVESV and LVIDs, but were similar in age, gender, co-morbidities, biochemistries and other echocardiographic parameters as the counterpart. Both CAD [(odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs): 1.669, 1.023–2.724], and LVESV (OR per-1 mL and 95% CIs: 1.073, 1.004–1.146) were independent determinants of reduced LV GLS. Kaplan-Meier analysis indicated that patients with reduced LV GLS had a significantly lower event-free survival rate compared to those with preserved GLS. The multivariate Cox regression analysis further demonstrated LV GLS as a significant predictor of adverse clinical events (hazard ratio per-1% and 95% CIs: 1.055, 1.002–1.110) after accounting for age, gender, and diabetes. Among the hemodialysis patients with preserved LVEF, LV GLS but not the conventional left ventricular functional indices were associated with long-term mortality and HHF. CAD could be a modifiable risk factor among the subjects with reduced LV GLS.

Multidimensional analysis of honey from Eastern Anatolia (Kars): Pollen spectrum, physicochemical properties, and antimicrobial activity

This study investigates the physicochemical properties, pollen composition, and antimicrobial activity of honey samples collected from Kars province, Türkiye. A total of 30 honey samples were analyzed for moisture content (13.9–18.0%), pH (3.44–3.92), electrical conductivity (0.138–0.343 mS/cm), free acidity (13.9–31.5 meq/kg), diastase activity (4.93–28.1 DN), hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) levels (3.5–37.1 mg/kg), sugar profile (fructose: 32.8–41.0%, glucose: 26.2–32.6%, sucrose: 0.1–2.7%, maltose: 1.4–2.7%), and proline content (288.87–1272.9 mg/kg). Pollen analysis identified 52 taxa from 30 botanical families, with Fabaceae, Boraginaceae, Lamiaceae, Asteraceae, and Brassicaceae being the most dominant. Of the honey samples, 27 were classified as multifloral and 3 as unifloral. Total pollen counts per 10 g (TPC-10 g) of honey ranged between Group II and Group V categories (2000 to &gt; 100000 grains). The antimicrobial activity of the honey was evaluated against Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, and Bacillus subtilis using the agar well diffusion method. Inhibition zones ranged from 11 ± 0.55 mm to 24 ± 1.2 mm, with greater efficacy observed against Gram-positive bacteria. Significant correlations were found between diastase activity and Staphylococcus aureus (r = 0.704, p &lt; 0.01) and Enterococcus faecalis (r = 0.518, p &lt; 0.01), as well as between proline content and Klebsiella pneumoniae (r = 0.454, p &lt; 0.05), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (r = 0.384, p &lt; 0.05), Staphylococcus aureus (r = 0.439, p &lt; 0.05), and Bacillus subtilis (r = 0.435, p &lt; 0.05). The sugar composition complied with international standards, with fructose and glucose being the predominant sugars. HMF levels remained within acceptable limits, suggesting appropriate storage and processing conditions. Overall, the findings highlight the high quality and antimicrobial potential of Kars honey, supporting its value as a natural and functional food product.

Investigating awareness of the sustainable development and ecological footprint among physiotherapy and rehabilitation students

Abstract The term environmental physiotherapy is now widely used, and it is emphasised that raising awareness of the environment and health from university education will be important for the transfer of knowledge on this subject into clinical practice in the future. Thus the aim of our study was to determine the awareness of Sustainable Development (SD) and Ecological Footprint (EFP) among students of physiotherapy and rehabilitation department (DPR; 512 − 76.19%). The socio-demographic data and the students’ views on the concepts of SD (8 questions) and EFP (7 questions), and the level of SD and EFP awareness (with SD and EFP Awareness Questionnaires) were recorded. Participants felt that they had insufficient knowledge of these concepts (SD (0–10): 1.65 ± 2.13-EFP (0–10): 2.64 ± 2.34). Although more than 50% of the students had heard of both concepts and had higher awareness scores, they were insufficiently able to define the relationship with their professions (SD: 10.7% and EFP: 12.3%). Physiotherapy students’ awareness of SD and EFP concepts in relation to their professional roles should be improved. It is also important to ensure that they have access to reliable sources of information via social media and the internet, as well as courses to be included in the curriculum.
