Timing is everything: How gen AI-driven digital platforms influence the way real-world cancer patients search for, learn about, and enroll in clinical trials.
Abstract
e13635 Background: AI-driven digital platforms are essential tools for cancer patients (pts) seeking treatment (tx) options. Understanding patient behaviors and intent on these platforms offers valuable insights into how pts navigate their journeys. This study explored the timing of pts searches and their objectives—whether focused on immediate tx options, educational resources, or planning for future tx. The study examined how those trends, when addressed, lead to improvement in clinical trial (CT) enrollment. Methods: A retrospective analysis utilized real-world data from Leal, an AI-driven platform that matches cancer pts with txs based on clinical parameters. Key analyses: A platform-wide survey of 6000 pts to assess patient intent (immediate tx, education, future planning). Recruitment strategy evaluation: A focused analysis (n = 79) examined a prequalification approach for not-yet-eligible pts who expressed interest in exploring the trial as a future option. Long-term follow-up assessment: A targeted evaluation (n = 24) of strategies for tracking pts over time, focusing on providing continuous education and support until pts become eligible. Results: Approximately 60% of Leal platform users were exploring CT tx options for the future or seeking educational resources. A focused analysis of a CT that allowed pre-qualification process for currently-ineligible pts, yielded double the number of CT referrals and 2.3-fold increase in pts signing informed consent. A targeted evaluation of a trial with a rare eligibility criterion (i.e. rare mutation), showed that long-term follow-up and continuous education (up to 1 year post pt signup) of pts with the rare mutation that were not immediately-eligible, increased referral rates to the trial by 33%. Conclusions: Effective digital recruitment platforms unlock the untapped potential of mid- to long-term CT enrollment of cancer pts who may become eligible over time. Trial recruitment efforts using digital platform should consider and adapt to how real-world cancer patients explore CTs: Incorporation of pre- qualification approaches for pts likely to become eligible within the trial recruitment period, generate strong commitment to the trial by pts, significantly improving trial enrollment over time. Long-term follow-up and continuous education are particularly beneficial for CT with rare or stringent eligibility criteria, increasing pt engagement and referral rates even months after initial contact. Once pt intent and journey consideration are built into clinical programs, recruitment becomes more efficient, improving quality of care for pts.
