Smart Bin: An IoT Based Waste Solution
Abstract
Biomedical waste requires timely segregation and safe handling to minimize risks to hospital staff, patients, and the environment. This paper, “Smart Bin: An IoT-Based Waste Solution,” proposes an automated biomedical waste segregation and monitoring system designed for healthcare facilities. The smart bin integrates IoT-enabled sensors including an ultrasonic sensor for fullness detection, a load cell for weight measurement, and gas and temperature sensors for identifying hazardous waste conditions. These sensors continuously collect real-time data and transmit it to a microcontroller, which triggers alerts when the bin reaches capacity or when unsafe gas or heat levels are detected. Based on sensor readings, the system categorizes the waste into appropriate compartments such as recyclable, non-recyclable, and hazardous, thereby reducing direct human contact with biomedical waste and minimizing the likelihood of improper disposal. Through the IoT interface, hospital staff can access real-time bin status, hazard alerts, and historical usage logs for efficient waste management and timely maintenance. This IoT-based Smart Bin enhances safety, improves segregation accuracy, and supports sustainable biomedical waste handling practices while addressing challenges related to manual sorting, environmental contamination, and health risks.
