Measuring the success of Genentech’s AIR Site Alliance in enrolling diverse patients: A framework.

Abstract

e23278 Background: Diverse patient representation in clinical trials creates robust data sets that may improve health outcomes for all patients. Roche-Genentech’s Advancing Inclusive Research® (AIR) Site Alliance is a coalition of clinical research sites working to improve Black and Latino representation in clinical trials. Data metrics and visualization tools were created to measure the Alliance’s progress toward more inclusive representation. This report highlights how well-defined and organized electronic data capture/visualization tools lead to meaningful insights to assess the effectiveness of AIR programs, inform strategies, and accelerate decision-making within an organization. Methods: The team used quantitative methods to evaluate how AIR Site Alliance sites performed in our clinical studies. Data sources from the company’s clinical trial management system (CTMS), electronic data capture (EDC) system, and US census data were analyzed to: Examine the representation breakdown of enrolled Black and Latino patients at these sites Compare Alliance site enrollment rate of Black and Latino patients to that of other sites on the same studies What is the representation breakdown of enrolled Black and Latino patients at these sites? % of total enrolled and counts, year over year Assess the enrollment of Black & Latino participants to the Alliance sites’s enrollment potential Compared to census data 120km from the sites located in Alabama, California, Illinois, New York, Tennessee, and Texas. Analyze site enrollment compared to a baseline (an average of 4 years before joining Alliance) Evaluate study adoption Site study acceptance vs. declines A data visualization dashboard with this data was created to gain insights and efficiently share information with leaders and decision-makers. Results: (Data as of December 21, 2024) Some examples of data points captured are: AIR Sites are enrolling Black & Latino/Latino patients ~2x faster than other sites on the same studies Oncology sites: Delivers a patient population 87% more diverse than their study peers and is the only US enroller of diverse patients in 1 of 5 studies they are on Since joining Alliance, six of our nine sites have increased their acceptance of GNE studies > 50% of Alliance sites enroll Black and Latino patients at rates that mirror local demographics. Conclusions: Collating this data into a visual dashboard increased the awareness of Alliance sites’ performance internally and externally, improving understanding of the program’s value and resulting in the program expanding into more therapeutic areas. Visualizing demographic data allows the Alliance team to make informed decisions that align with company-wide diversity goals while showcasing site capabilities. As companies create diversity goals to include more underrepresented patients in oncology trials, measurements of success and data visualizations are needed to reach them.
