Dual-polarized metalens based on Huygens’ metasurface
Abstract
The fusion of lenses and antennas presents compelling advantages, including enhanced gain, reduced beam width, and improved directivity, making it highly suitable for applications in modern communication and radar systems. In this work, we propose a novel dual-polarized Huygens’ unit capable of achieving full phase coverage from 0 to 2π, with transmission coefficients exceeding 0.86. Leveraging this unit, we design a dual-polarized metalens that can simultaneously focus two orthogonal polarizations at a designated focal point with high precision, demonstrating exceptional control over electromagnetic wavefronts. By integrating the metalens with a patch antenna, we demonstrate the conversion of spherical waves into tightly collimated, pencil-shaped beams, achieving a maximum gain enhancement of 14.57 dBi and significantly improved beam quality. Experimental results show excellent agreement with simulations, validating the design's effectiveness and practical feasibility. This work highlights the transformative potential of Huygens’ metasurfaces in advancing antenna technology, enabling the development of compact, high-performance systems for future applications in wireless communication, radar, and beamforming systems. The proposed approach paves the way for innovative solutions in electromagnetic wave manipulation and antenna design.
