Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy in breast cancer: Prevalence and predictors in an Indian tertiary care center.

e23201 Background: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a frequent and debilitating side effect associated with the use of neurotoxic agents such as taxanes and platinum compounds in breast cancer treatment. It significantly impacts patients' quality of life and can lead to compromised adherence to therapy. While global data on CIPN is extensive, studies focusing on Indian populations remain limited. This study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence and predictors of CIPN among female breast cancer patients treated at a tertiary care center in India, addressing a critical gap in the existing knowledge base and providing insights to improve management strategies. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 120 female breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy at a tertiary care center. CIPN was assessed using the EORTC QLQ-CIPN20 questionnaire. Data on patient demographics, comorbidities, BMI, and treatment regimens were collected. Statistical analysis included descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and logistic regression to identify predictors of CIPN. Results: The prevalence of CIPN was 94.2% at the end of chemotherapy cycles. No significant association was found between CIPN severity and age (P = 0.989) or BMI (P = 0.774). Comorbid conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and hypothyroidism, did not significantly influence CIPN occurrence. Among treatment regimens, taxane- and platinum-based therapies were prevalent; however, no specific regimen showed a significant association with CIPN severity. At three months post-chemotherapy, 27.5% of patients reported persistent CIPN symptoms, with alcohol history and advanced cancer stage being significant predictors. Conclusions: CIPN is highly prevalent among Indian breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, with limited modifiable risk factors identified. Persistent symptoms post-treatment highlight the need for targeted interventions and long-term management strategies to improve patient outcomes.
